Chapter 48: The Young Master Who Is Different and A Heart Without Arrogance
The tea in the small courtyard room had long grown cold again, but Lin Meihua remained seated on the woven cushion. Her fingers lightly brushed the delicate porcelain cup Yu Liang had held only moments ago.
Outside, the sound of rustling bamboo leaves was heard in the calm evening. In her head, decades of memories came rushing back like a tidal wave.
Being the youngest child in the renowned Lin Family, her childhood had been nothing but luxurious and lavish. She had been loved and protected from all of the brutality of the World of Cultivation by her loving parents and her elder siblings. For young Meihua, the whole world was like an endless, cheerful place with everyone smiling and laughing with open palms.
Then she grew up.
As she entered her teenage years and stepped into the aristocratic circles, the golden veil slowly dissolved, revealing the ugly truth underneath. The "friends" who had flocked to her side, laughing at her jokes and showering her with gifts, were not drawn to her. They were drawn to the colossal weight of the Lin family name.
She vividly recalled the young masters of prestigious clans, gilded geniuses who flaunted their status like peacocks using every trick, connection, and elaborate scheme just to secure a single invitation to her tea gatherings.
They talked with grandiose flourish, always going on about how gifted they were, their family’s legacy, and what the future had in store for them while glancing discreetly at her to see her reaction. For them, she was not a human being. She was a golden stepping stone to an illustrious future.
They also admired her looks, talked about their contacts, and even casually talked about their families’ resources, trying to impress her. They would also exaggerate about their accomplishments, obviously wanting to attract her attention.
Over time, the laughter felt hollow. The warm smiles around her began to look like rigid, plastic masks. Except for her genuine, loving family, the entire world felt like an elaborate performance built on deceit and transaction. Disillusioned and exhausted, Lin Meihua slowly withdrew. She built her own cold, impenetrable wall, wearing a flawless, professional smile that kept everyone at an arm’s length.
But it all changed when Yu Liang walked through the doors of the Mystic Pavilion.
At first glance, he had looked like an ordinary customer. There was nothing particularly remarkable about his appearance or the way he carried himself.
He had simply walked in, asked a few questions, and behaved like anyone else who had come to make a purchase. Yet from the moment he opened his mouth, he slowly demolished every expectation she had built over a lifetime.
His words, his manner of thinking, and even the way he approached simple matters felt different from what she was accustomed to. She couldn’t quite explain why, but the more they talked, the harder it became to see him as an ordinary customer.
When he casually declared that he would return to empty out her store, she had almost chuckled to herself, brushing it off as a harmless, slightly amusing joke. Yet against all odds, he actually returned and kept his word without a second of hesitation.
The stock he purchased included a fragmented cultivation technique of Tier 9. The technique was not supposed to be sold; it was just put up for display. However, curiosity got the better of her. She was eager to know how he would react to such a thing. Therefore, she broke her usual rule by selling it to him.
During the three day gap before their scheduled pavilion appointment, Lin Meihua couldn’t suppress her curiosity once again. She had quietly ordered a background investigation on him.
The report she received left her stunned.
Given his unpredictable spending and the absolute, careless nonchalance with which he received a Tier 9 fragmented method almost as if a legendary technique was completely beneath his notice, she had been convinced he was a secret heir from a supreme ancient clan.
Yet the intelligence reports detailed a completely different reality.
For those three days, Yu Liang hadn’t spent his time holed up in luxury suites, posturing in high class banquets, or cultivating in arrogant solitude. Instead, he spent his days strolling through the mundane mortal streets, eating simple street food, and chatting with low tier vendors. If a humble shopkeeper gave him good service, he would tip them generously, treating them with effortless respect.
Lin Meihua remembered how the high-ranking young masters in her past social circles held absolute disdain for such things. To those arrogant figures, even glancing at a mortal or a low-level merchant was a degrading insult to their noble status.
The attitude was hardly surprising. The more privileged someone was, the more distant they seemed to become from ordinary people. They were raised surrounded by servants, treasures, and praise, until simple things gradually became beneath their notice.
For them, the success of the trader was not important unless it would have some personal benefit for them. The personality of the person was even less important than their background and connections.
Lin Meihua had encountered countless people like that. They could smile politely while secretly judging everyone in the room, always measuring others by status, cultivation, and family name. Even when they showed interest in someone, there was usually a reason behind it. Genuine curiosity was rare, and sincere respect was even rarer.
Yet Yu Liang challenged that every single notion she had formed about wealthy, powerful cultivators. He walked through the world completely free, unburdened by pretense, untouched by arrogance, and entirely comfortable in his own way.
And tonight, sitting across from him in the tea room, that realization had solidified into something profound. He did not try to impress her. He did not act superior. He knew who she really was, but he still respected her with the honest respect she had not received from anyone else in years.
Lin Meihua gently picked up the jade pin and placed it back into her hair. The subtle concealment array flickered back to work, veiling her striking beauty once more.
A soft, genuine smile curved her lips.
"Yu Liang..." she whispered softly into the quiet room, her eyes gleaming with a light that hadn’t been there in years. "Maybe... just maybe... I’ve finally found my very first real friend."
