Immortal Travel of Longevity
Chapter 906: Hearing of the Demon Sovereign Again
That look struck fear even into Gu Jiangshi, who had weathered despair time and again.
Though his aura was incredibly weak, he felt like a boundless demon, making those around him tremble.
"What was his name?" Chen Changsheng asked.
Gu Jiangshi replied, "The gang of grave robbers he traveled with called him the Little Scholar. It was partly because of his frail build, but also because he was the sharpest mind among them. He knew more than anyone else and was highly skilled at drawing Geographical Maps and surveying the terrain."
Chen Changsheng listened, then asked, "Did he not have a real name?"
Gu Jiangshi shook his head. "I followed him for several jiazi after that, but I never once heard his real name. He went by many titles later on, though. At first, he was the Golden Corpse Daoist. Then the Demon Corpse, and later, the Demon Sovereign. But the title most people know him by is the Demon-Summoning Divine Lord."
"Demon-Summoning Divine Lord, Demon-Summoning Divine Lord..."
Chen Changsheng froze, his mind sinking into heavy thought.
"Tell me everything you know about this Demon-Summoning Divine Lord!"
Noticing his reaction, Gu Jiangshi asked, "Have you heard of him?""I've heard a little," Chen Changsheng said.
He had even fought a remnant soul of the sovereign of the Demon Domain. There was also the Demon Sword, and all the various places he had heard that name mentioned over the years.
"A very long time has passed since then. To think someone still remembers him."
After saying this, Gu Jiangshi went on to recount the origins of the Demon Sovereign.
"After that incident, he became a true stiff corpse with a clear consciousness. His potential was obvious to all of us. Relying on his own intellect and our strength, he quickly entered the Land of Immortals and established a firm foothold."
"When he first stepped onto the Corpse Dao, he was nothing but a greenhorn. But a mere year later, he had sought out countless gathering places of yin and malevolent energy to nourish himself. He alone became powerful enough to rival all of us combined, and his physical strength was absolutely extraordinary."
"However, there was something strange about him."
"Something strange?" Chen Changsheng asked.
Gu Jiangshi nodded. "He would vanish from time to time, leaving us behind. This meant we were constantly drifting. Suppressed by the ancient runes, we couldn't break our restraints, and our own strength wasn't enough to secure a safe haven, so we spent most of our time in the Immortal Realm running and hiding. At first, we thought he might have run into some powerful expert and met a violent end, and we prepared to wander the Immortal Realm forever. But a few years later, he would always track us down and gather us back up, one by one."
"And this didn't just happen once or twice. Later, when he went into seclusion deep in the mountains, it happened five or six times. He would vanish without a trace, only to inexplicably reappear."
Chen Changsheng's heart suddenly skipped a beat.
He stood up, a look of sheer disbelief flashing through his eyes.
"How is that possible..." Chen Changsheng murmured, his pupils contracting.
This sudden shift in emotion caught Gu Jiangshi off guard.
"It shouldn't be like this, it shouldn't be..."
Chen Changsheng paced back and forth across the room, unable to calm his racing thoughts for a long time.
Gu Jiangshi looked confused. "You seem a little too agitated."
Chen Changsheng stopped pacing. He turned to Gu Jiangshi and asked, "How long would he disappear for each time?"
Gu Jiangshi thought for a moment before answering, "Two or three years, most likely."
"..."
Hearing this, Chen Changsheng's gaze grew dazed once again.
He sank back into his chair, his eyes filled with absolute disbelief.
That Demon-Summoning Divine Lord...
Was actually one of his past lives?
Chen Changsheng didn't believe there was anyone else in this world afflicted with the exact same curse as him—the bizarre sickness of suddenly vanishing and just as suddenly reappearing.
Based on Gu Jiangshi's words, he could practically confirm it.
There was at least a ninety percent chance that the Demon-Summoning Divine Lord was one of his past lives.
His mind churned, refusing to settle.
He fell silent, lost in thought for a long time.
Seeing Chen Changsheng like this, Gu Jiangshi did not continue the story.
The sudden shift in the room's atmosphere made him feel a bit anxious.
Gu Jiangshi didn't understand why the man was so worked up, but it was obvious that some of these matters were definitively connected to him.
Yet, looking back at his own words, he couldn't figure out the crux of the matter.
Was it those strange disappearances?
A long while later.
Chen Changsheng finally seemed to come back to his senses.
He let out a soft sigh and said, "Tell me the whole story. From beginning to end, without leaving out a single detail. I want to know everything about this Demon-Summoning Divine Lord."
Gu Jiangshi knew a great deal indeed.
After all, when the Demon-Summoning Divine Lord first arrived in the Land of Immortals, these ancient zombies had been his greatest trump card.
Some of his more trivial encounters were rather ordinary.
In his early years cultivating the Corpse Dao, the Demon Sovereign spent the vast majority of his time searching for places rich in malevolent yin energy, killing for treasure, and seeking out fortuitous encounters. Though the Demon Sovereign terrified him, Gu Jiangshi rarely saw him engage in bloodthirsty massacres during those years. He never killed indiscriminately.
He started out weak and gradually grew powerful.
He even began to make a name for himself in the Land of Immortals.
However, the more his reputation grew, the worse it was for him.
"I don't know when it started, but rumors began to spread through the Land of Immortals. People said he reeked of malevolent corpse energy and acted like a demon. He had always followed the principle of 'if others don't cross me, I won't cross them,' but out of nowhere, he was slapped with the label of a demon."
"But he didn't seem to want to quarrel with anyone. He took us into hiding, fleeing from place to place until we eventually concealed ourselves in a bottomless valley."
"But things always take a turn for the worse."
Gu Jiangshi sighed and said, "That child wasn't bad by nature, but he was despised by the world for his vile aura. Every cultivator wanted to be his enemy. Once, a cultivator pushed him into a corner. Left with no other choice, he struck to kill, which ultimately brought him endless trouble."
"That cultivator turned out to be the leading senior disciple of a local Immortal Sect, and the chief disciple of one of their elders. After that, the relentless pursuit began..."
"The deceased cultivator was the one at fault, but in the Land of Immortals, the one with the biggest fists is always right. The incident caused a massive uproar. Countless cultivators cursed him as deviant cultivator scum, vowing to leave him with no place to stand in the Land of Immortals."
"They pushed harder and harder, while he kept giving ground. He endured it for a long time, but once he was backed into a corner with nowhere left to run, he finally struck back. The elder who came to hunt him down died without leaving a whole corpse, and over a dozen disciples perished alongside him. From then on, whenever he met people like them, he showed no mercy."
"His reputation grew fouler by the day..."
"Like a rat in the street, everyone clamored to beat him and cursed his name."
"Spurred on by that Immortal Sect, countless cultivators drew their swords and rallied under the banner of exterminating a deviant cultivator, launching an endless manhunt against him."
