Immortal Ascension Through Marriage: Investing in My Wife Get Returns
Chapter 118 - 117: A Line in the Dirt
"Spring has sprung, Master Lin!" Wang sneered, his cruel eyes scanning the courtyard before locking onto Lin Yuan. "We gave you the winter to survive, but the grace period on your wife’s debt is officially over. And since you made us wait through the freeze... the boss has decided that the interest on the debt has doubled."
Lin Yuan stood completely still in the center of the muddy courtyard, the bright spring sunlight casting sharp shadows across his face. Behind him, standing on the wooden porch of the dojo, were his three students, and his young son, Lin Fan.
A few months ago, Lin Yuan had swallowed his pride. He had bowed his head, handed over his wife’s ancestral loom, and taken a beating to buy time. He had learned the bitter, humiliating lesson that pride could not fill a family.
But the situation had fundamentally changed.
Over the brutal winter, while nursing Fan back to health, Lin Yuan had relentlessly trained his own body. He had pushed his mortal flesh to the absolute limits of human conditioning, utilizing breathing techniques and bone-alignment postures. He possessed no cultivation, but his muscles were now coiled like dense steel springs, and his stamina had been violently stretched to its peak.
More importantly, he already knew a fundamental truth: extortion never truly ends. Just like what he experienced as an outer city cultivator, If he paid double the interest today, the Black Tiger Gang would return next month demanding quadruple. They would bleed the Azure Swallow School until there was nothing left but corpses.
Compromise had kept them alive through the winter. But to secure their future, compromise had to die today.
"Take Fan’er and go inside the main hall," Lin Yuan instructed his three students, his voice dangerously low and steady. "Do not come out, no matter what you hear."
Zhao, the normally rebellious youth, swallowed hard, recognizing the terrifying, absolute resolve radiating from his master. Without a word, he grabbed Lin Fan’s hand and ushered the boy and the other two disciples behind the doors, shutting them tight.
Lin Yuan turned his attention back to Wang. He did not have his iron sword—he had traded that for his son’s life—but resting against the courtyard wall was a thick, six-foot-long staff carved from dense white ash wood. Lin Yuan walked over, his boots squelching in the spring mud, and picked it up.
He walked slowly past Wang and the six thugs, stepping out through the shattered front gates of the courtyard and into the bustling, muddy street of Qingshui Town.
The townspeople, recognizing the snarling tiger emblems on the thugs’ leather armor, immediately began to scatter. Merchants abandoned their carts, and mothers dragged their children into alleyways, watching the confrontation with terrified, wide eyes from behind cracked shutters.
Wang and his men followed Lin Yuan into the street, chuckling darkly at the sight of the lone man holding a wooden stick. From the end of the street, six more Black Tiger enforcers emerged from an alley, cutting off any route of escape. A full dozen armed men now surrounded the front of the dojo.
Lin Yuan did not look at the additional thugs. He lowered the tip of the staff into the wet mud of the street. With a slow, deliberate sweep of his arms, he drew a straight line in the dirt, directly separating the Black Tiger Gang from the threshold of the Azure Swallow School.
"This is my home," Lin Yuan declared. "This is the line. The debt is cancelled. Anyone who crosses this line should not blame me for what happens next."
Wang stared at the line in the dirt, his face twisting into a mask of pure rage. The head of a struggling dojo had just publicly challenged the absolute authority of the local syndicate.
"You arrogant, crippled dog," Wang roared, drawing a rusted iron machete. "Kill him! Tear the school down to the foundation!"
The twelve thugs surged forward with a deafening war cry.
Lin Yuan exhaled a slow, measured breath. The martial instincts of this body within the dream domain immediately mapped out the battlefield. He could see the tiny shifts in their shoulders, the uneven footing of their muddy steps, and the wide, clumsy arcs of their weapons. Every movement revealed an opening, and Lin Yuan could see them all.
The first thug crossed the line, swinging a heavy wooden club aimed at Lin Yuan’s skull.
Lin Yuan didn’t block. Blocking wasted energy and damaged joints. He simply pivoted on his heel, letting the heavy club whistle harmlessly past his ear. In the same fluid motion, he thrust the blunt end of the staff directly into the man’s solar plexus. The thug’s eyes bulged as the air was violently expelled from his lungs, and he dropped to the mud like a stone.
Two more men charged from the left, their machetes slicing through the air. Lin Yuan swept his staff low, shattering the kneecap of the leading attacker with a sickening crunch. As the man screamed and fell, Lin Yuan vaulted over him, using the staff as a fulcrum, and delivered a devastating, spinning heel kick to the temple of the second thug, instantly knocking him unconscious.
It was a chaotic display of violence.
Lin Yuan moved through the mud like a phantom, his movements sharp and precise despite the limitations of his mortal body. Every strike was calculated, every step carefully measured, and every opening was exploited without hesitation.
But this was still a mortal body.
His strength and endurance had their limits.
And there were twelve of them.
As Lin Yuan deflected a spear thrust and cracked his staff across another man’s jaw, a creeping, burning exhaustion began to flood his muscles. In the world of cultivation, a battle against a dozen foes would end in a fraction of a second. Here, every single movement required agonizing physical exertion.
Wang, seeing Lin Yuan’s chest heaving, seized the opening. He lunged from Lin Yuan’s blind spot, his machete thrusting forward with lethal intent.
Lin Yuan sensed the displacement of the air, but his exhausted legs were a fraction of a second too slow to completely dodge.
Shllk.
The rusted blade sliced deeply into Lin Yuan’s left shoulder, tearing through the gray fabric of his tunic and biting deep into the muscle.
A sharp, blinding spike of agony ripped through Lin Yuan’s body. Blood immediately poured from the wound, soaking his sleeve.
For a cultivator, such a flesh wound would have been insignificant. But for a mortal, the sudden loss of blood and the searing pain were far more serious. His strength weakened, his balance became unstable, and even the simplest movements suddenly became difficult.
"Got you, you bastard!" Wang spat, attempting to yank the blade out for another strike.
But Lin Yuan did not retreat. He fully embraced the vulnerability of his human body, using the blinding pain to violently snap his focus back to a razor-sharp peak.
Before Wang could pull the machete free, Lin Yuan dropped his staff, reached out with his right hand, and viciously grabbed Wang by the throat.
Lin Yuan stepped completely inside the brute’s guard, ignoring the blade still lodged in his own shoulder flesh. With a terrifying roar that echoed down the length of the street, Lin Yuan drove his forehead directly into the bridge of Wang’s nose.
CRACK!
Bone shattered. Blood exploded from Wang’s face, blinding the thug. Lin Yuan ripped the machete out of his own shoulder, tossing it into the mud, and delivered a brutal, sweeping leg kick that sent Wang crashing hard onto his back. Lin Yuan placed his muddy boot firmly on Wang’s throat, applying just enough crushing pressure to cut off his airway.
The remaining four thugs froze in terror. Their leader was choking in the mud, his face a bloody ruin, under the boot of a man who was bleeding profusely but staring at them with cold, unyielding eyes.
"Cross the line," Lin Yuan whispered, the threat carrying perfectly through the sudden, eerie silence of the street.
The thugs stared at the line in the dirt, then at Lin Yuan’s bleeding shoulder. Their courage finally broke. One by one, they dropped their weapons, scrambled backward, and fled into the alleyways, leaving their unconscious comrades and their choking leader behind in the mud.
Lin Yuan kicked Wang in the ribs, sending the brute rolling into the street gutter. "Tell your boss. The Azure Swallow School pays no more debts."
Wang scrambled to his feet, coughing up blood, and limped away as fast as his battered legs could carry him.
The street fell completely silent, save for the heavy, ragged sound of Lin Yuan’s breathing. He stood there for a moment, pressing his right hand against his bleeding left shoulder, the adrenaline rapidly fading, leaving behind a crushing wave of physical agony. He had protected his property, but he had just made a dangerous enemy of the Black Tiger Gang’s ultimate leader.
He turned and limped back into the courtyard. Lin Fan and the students rushed out of the hall, their faces pale with shock as they helped their bleeding master inside to bind his wounds.
Night fell over Qingshui Town. Lin Yuan sat in the dimly lit main hall, his shoulder tightly bandaged with linen, the dull, throbbing pain keeping him awake. He had fought not for the Great Dao, but for the safety of himself, his son and his pupils.
Lin Yuan realized that everyone, whether mortal or immortal, carried responsibilities. For some, that responsibility was to align their actions with the Great Dao and continue walking toward immortality. For others, it was simply to protect the people and things that gave their lives meaning.
In the real world, Lin Yuan carried both responsibilities. He cultivated the Dao while also caring for and protecting his wife, Bai Qingyue.
But here, within this dream domain, his responsibilities were different.
He only needed to protect his son and his students.
Every day brought him a new revelation, bringing his Mortal Heart closer to perfection. He had already learned that might was not everything to a mortal. Yet he also understood that the mortal and cultivation worlds shared certain similarities. Cruelty was one of them.
The strong would always exist.
The weak would always be tested.
And sometimes, when faced with certain situations, one had to cross the invisible line separating the ways of mortals from those of cultivators.
Just as he had done with the Black Tiger Gang.
Lin Yuan had chosen to use his strength to eliminate an immediate threat, just as a cultivator would have done. That did not contradict the purpose of cultivating his Mortal Heart.
If anything, it was part of it.
Being a mortal was not simply about enduring, compromising, or lowering one’s head. It was also about knowing when to endure and when to stand your ground.
There were ninety-nine days when one could bow one’s head.
But there would always be that one day when one had to raise their fist.
Not for pride.
Not for dominance.
But to protect the things that mattered.
When the first rays of the morning sun broke over the horizon, Lin Yuan heard a soft, repeated rustling sound coming from the front porch.
He slowly stood up, grabbing his staff for support, and unbarred the front doors.
He expected to see the Black Tiger Gang returning for revenge. Instead, he found the porch completely covered in small, woven wicker baskets.
There were dozens of them. Inside were fresh loaves of bread, small bundles of dried medicinal herbs, clean linen bandages, rare winter root vegetables, and small pouches of rice.
Lin Yuan looked up and down the street. The townspeople were opening their shutters. A baker across the street caught his eye, offered a deep, silent bow of profound respect, and quickly went back inside.
The people of Qingshui Town, who had previously shunned him out of fear of the gang, had secretly come in the dead of night to leave their precious supplies at his door in silent, overwhelming gratitude.
Lin Yuan stood in the doorway, staring at the baskets. In the cultivation world, the weak worshipped the strong out of absolute terror. But here, in the mortal world, he had seen the profound, beautiful warmth of community. These ordinary, and somewhat powerless people had practically nothing, yet they were sharing their bread with the man who had bled to defend his ground.
It was a profound advancement of his Mortal Heart.
As Lin Yuan knelt to pick up a basket of warm bread, the sound of galloping hooves echoed down the street. An opulent, silk-draped carriage pulled by two white stallions stopped directly in front of the line he had drawn in the dirt the day before.
A well-dressed official stepped out, unrolling a scroll bearing the golden seal of the regional government.
"Master Lin Yuan of the Azure Swallow School," the official announced, his voice ringing with formal authority. "The Magistrate has heard of your remarkable martial prowess and your defense of the public peace. In recognition of your skill, the Magistrate formally invites the Azure Swallow School to participate in the upcoming Provincial Martial Arts Tournament. The grand prize is one thousand taels of silver and absolute imperial protection."
