I'm the Only Magus in This Witch World
Chapter 90: Becoming a Walking Treasure
"What are you looking at?" Renna asked, curious but also a little embarrassed, moving her hands to cover herself lower down.
’Don’t tell me he can see through clothes now?’ She was ready to smack his head if that turned out to be true.
Magna had said he would gain some kind of power, but never said what kind, so it could be anything.
Seeing her reaction, he paused for a second, realizing what she must be thinking. "No, no, it’s not what you think."
Though secretly, he wished it was.
"I can see a glimmer in your stomach area. Probably your mana reserve." He explained, pointing at her stomach.
Renna’s furrowed brows relaxed, but a second later her eyes went wide again. "You can see mana inside me? How?"
That was definitely something worth being astonished by.
"Well, I don’t know how. I just can." Magna chuckled, then asked. "How full is your mana reserve right now?"
He wanted to know exactly what that glimmer represented in terms of ratio.
"Full, at the moment." She answered, still not quite able to believe what his new power actually was.
She had heard of spells that let Witches see and track mana, as well as certain artifacts that could do the same. But those were all high grade spells and artifacts, sold in Witch markets or traded quietly at private, closed meetings for high prices.
In a way, Magna was basically a walking artifact right now, one that would fetch a huge price at the market.
It wasn’t only that his eyes turned an expensive-looking gold, but his overall worth suddenly skyrocketed, as any Witch would offer a fortune for him at an auction.
Magna turned his gaze around to see if he could spot any other traces of mana nearby.
But there was nothing on the ground, and nothing in the trees.
It was only when he looked up at the sky through the thick tree branches that he noticed it had somehow taken on a faint yellow tint.
At first he thought the sun was dyeing the sky its own color, but the sky in this dimension never changed, as if time itself had stopped here.
’Maybe I can see the spell surrounding this dimension now?’ He tried to make sense of it.
His new trait let him detect mana, so if this whole dimension was formed from a spell, it made sense that he could now see the invisible walls surrounding them.
If he was right, this could be the thing that let him find the exit without having to risk their lives fighting the Faceless Witch.
But before that, there was something he needed to do first.
He needed to refill his mana a little, since he could feel that freezing cold in his body from how low his reserve was, sitting at only 1.2% at the moment.
He found the pouch on the ground, still holding 2 red pills, and quickly popped them into his mouth.
The same warmth filled his body again, washing away all the exhaustion and fatigue left over from the mutation as well.
Mana 9.7%
Checking his reserve, he saw it had only gone up by around 8%.
Where one pill used to fill 10%, it now filled less than half that.
That confirmed his earlier guess. Every time he triggered an option and went through a mutation, his mana capacity also grew, and it had now more than doubled.
He wanted to ask Renna for more foods or anything to give him mana to fill it further, but at that moment, his ears caught a faint sound again.
He stood up immediately. "We need to move, that Witch is getting close."
Before trying to fight her, he wanted to try the safer option first, using his new eyes to search for an exit.
Renna didn’t question his decision, nodding and falling in behind him once again.
As Magna moved away from the direction of the footsteps, he kept glancing up at the sky as much as he could.
The golden hue in the sky wasn’t spread evenly. Some patches were darker and brighter yellow, while others looked faded and pale.
The darker, brighter patches seemed to cluster together in certain spots, forming a thin line that stretched off into the distance.
Finding that strange, he followed the line, curious where it led.
After walking nonstop, following the line where the mana seemed most concentrated, he noticed it curving downward up ahead, like the end of a rainbow.
Growing more curious, he quickened his pace, weaving through the wide gaps between the trees.
"What did you see?" Renna asked, noticing how he kept glancing up at the sky to guide his direction, and how he had suddenly picked up speed, sensing he was chasing something.
"There’s a line in the sky, where the mana is gathering into one point. It dips down a little further ahead. It might be a weak spot in the spell holding this dimension together. Maybe even the exit." He explained without stopping, until his eyes caught sight of an opening ahead, where the trees finally ended.
"I think I found something."
He had never come across a clearing like this before on their walk, since no matter where he went, it always felt like he ended up back where he started.
After passing the last tree, he stepped out into a large clearing surrounded by trees.
It wasn’t empty at all.
"Is this real?" Magna had to ask himself, just to be sure of what he was seeing.
What lay in front of him was a wide, sprawling sunberry farm.
Every inch of it was covered in bushes, thick with large, round sunberries growing among them.
They weren’t ordinary sunberries either.
Just by their shape alone, slightly bigger than normal and perfectly round, along with the faint golden glow Magna could see coming off every single one, it was obvious these were all Golden Sunberries.
"Aren’t those just sunberries?" Unlike Magna, Renna didn’t seem impressed at all, clearly unaware that they were actually mana fruits.
Magna didn’t find that strange, since Golden Sunberry wasn’t a well known mana fruit. It was quite rare to find among ordinary sunberry patches in this region.
The two times Magna and Faye had stumbled across one before had been rare strokes of luck.
If it had been a more common mana fruit, the Witches would have sealed off the sunberry fields and farmed them themselves. They would never leave such a task to ordinary villagers, ensuring no one ever accidentally stumbled upon and ate such a precious resource.
Everything looked great, a huge field with hundreds of Golden Sunberries growing freely.
But there was one thing standing right at the center of that field that instantly killed Magna’s mood.
Standing there, right in the middle of the whole mana fruit field, was an old hut, worn down and falling apart.
’Why is this thing here now?’
It was the very same hut Magna had used twice before to leave the dimension, the one he hadn’t been able to find this time arround.
For some reason, it seemed to have moved to this spot.
