I Wrote Trash Novels to Level Up, Now Everyone Thinks I'm the Hero
Chapter 75: The Mistranslation, and a Border Incident
The beeswax candle on the desk had burned down to a cloudy puddle of wax. The whole research room was buried in cross-reference notes on grammar and thick, dust-covered ancient Beastkin dictionaries.
Sylvia sat slumped over the edge of the table, her silver beast ears drooping with exhaustion, dark circles visible under her eyes. Her hand trembled slightly as she flipped between one of Lucian's handwritten manuscripts and a rough leather-bound pirated book — a Beastkin Dialect translation just seized at the western border.
Click.
The door opened. Lucian walked in, carrying two steaming cups of herbal tea. He set one down in front of her and pulled up a chair across the table.
"Found it yet? Why did fifty thousand Beastkin warriors on the western border suddenly draw swords and try to break the ceasefire? If that trade route stays blockaded past three days, the Vance family's two-hundred-thousand-ton wool contract eats a three-hundred-thousand-gold penalty."
Sylvia picked up the warm tea and took a deep breath to steady herself. She pulled the pirated book closer, pointing at the fourth line of chapter sixteen.
"Master... it's not that the Beastkin are being aggressive. They're furious because of this book."
Lucian narrowed his eyes at the scrawled Beastkin script.
"What do you mean?"
Sylvia laid Lucian's original manuscript side by side with it, starting to break down each character.
"In the original Old Elvish, you wrote a line of dialogue for the protagonist: 'Open your arms and embrace the weak.' The root verb here is Khar, carrying the meaning of shelter and protection."
She pointed to the pirated version.
"Beastkin grammar is extremely sensitive to action prefixes. The translator at this pirate press... out of laziness and ignorance of grammar, swapped the conciliatory prefix Nul- for the aggressive prefix Zul-. He translated 'Embrace' into 'Sever.'"
Sylvia looked up, each word carrying a chill.
"The line 'Open your arms and embrace the weak'... in this pirated translation became: 'Draw your blade and sever the chains of humanity.'"
Lucian sat frozen in his chair.
He stared at the mistranslated Zul-Khar on the page, then at the western border map, glowing red with the threat of war.
All ten of his fingers curled into fists, his mouth twitching.
"A military crisis threatening fifty thousand lives... caused by some pirate translator too cheap to spend five copper on a dictionary?!"
"That's right," Sylvia nodded. "The Beastkin tribes worship courage. Reading that line in a book they treat as scripture, every Great Chieftain now believes the Nameless Knight is personally ordering them to wage a holy war to wipe out humanity and free themselves."
If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.
Lucian pressed a hand to his forehead and let out a long breath.
"Fix it. Now. Whatever it takes, we shut this grammar disaster down before both sides start swinging blades."
Ting!

Sylvia stood up straight. She walked over to the pedestal holding a long-range communication crystal orb in the corner of the room, placing her hand on the crystal.
HUMMM...
Silver light burst outward.
Sylvia took a deep breath, her voice resonating at the low, thunderous frequency of Ancient High Beastkin — a language only the earliest Elder Chieftains were permitted to speak.
"Garokk, Great Chieftain of the Western Wolf Pack! I am Sylvia Lunaire, Head Librarian of the Silver Moon Archive, supreme representative of the Copyright Author!"
The magical sound tore through space, carrying straight to the command tent of the Beastkin army three thousand miles away.
Sylvia didn't use threats of war. She spent ten minutes precisely breaking down every prefix, every syllable of the original Nul-Khar command, exposing the pirated translation's fatal error and transmitting the full correction, sealed with the Ancient Clans' soul-mark, through the arcane network.
On the other end, Great Chieftain Garokk stayed silent for three full minutes.
Then the mighty, thunderous voice of the warlord came through the crystal orb, filled with reverence and relief.
"So it was a cowardly scheme by pirate merchants to sow division between us... Please convey the Beastkin people's deepest gratitude to the Nameless Knight. He personally sent an emissary of the Ancient Clans to save us from a pointless bloodbath. The ceasefire is back in effect, immediately! Vance's wool caravans will be safely escorted through the border!"
Click.
The crystal orb went dark.
Sylvia let go of the pedestal, her legs going weak, stumbling back half a step. She leaned against the wall, chest heaving, sweat soaking her forehead.
She had just single-handedly stopped a bloody war between two major races in exactly ten minutes, using nothing but grammar and a magical communication crystal.
Lucian walked over, reached into his spatial ring, and pulled out a red velvet box.
He opened the lid and took out a glowing, elven-jade-inlaid quill — an ancient artifact worth five thousand gold, salvaged from the Titan Dungeon — and placed it gently into Sylvia's palm.
"A reward for you. Starting this month, your base salary goes up 20%, plus a senior diplomatic specialist stipend."
Lucian looked her straight in the eye.
"You just saved this family from paying out three hundred thousand gold in wool contract penalties. Well done, Sylvia."
Sylvia looked down at the jeweled quill in her hand, then up at Lucian's ten-year-old face.
Her eyes went faintly damp, a bright, proud, peaceful smile lighting up her face.
"Thank you, Master."
She held the quill tight against her chest. She understood, in that moment, that she was no longer a mindless object once put up for auction. She was an independent scholar, a linguistic expert who held the power to change the fate of tens of thousands of lives.
BOOM!
A sharp screech of iron-clad wheels braking hard echoed from outside the villa's gate.
The research room's front door was thrown wide open.
Four Inquisitors in black robes embroidered with the flaming sword emblem of the Church's Inquisitorial Court stepped in, carrying a scroll of summons sealed with the Pope's dark red wax.
"Lucian Vance! On the basis of a series of assassination riots carried out in the western territories under the name of your family's published work..."
The lead Inquisitor's voice was hard.
"Come with us. The Sacred Court is waiting to question you on charges of inciting social unrest."
