I Was Written as Cannon Fodder, Now I'm Rewriting the Genre

Chapter 143 - 133: Cannon Fodder Must Die

  • Next Chapter

As the cold, gloomy domain pressed down on her, Bai Qiang felt as though her limbs were encased in solid ice. Once again, she couldn’t use her Shadow Instant Teleportation. Just like when those two little ghosts had hugged her legs earlier, contact with a ghost would seal away her teleportation. Furthermore, the Ghost Doctor’s domain was far stronger than that of those corpses.

Staring at the electric drill drawing closer in the mirror, she struggled to back away again and again. With trembling hands, she flipped open the medical record, pulled out the pen she usually kept clipped to her chest, and scribbled a line of text as fast as she could.

"Fang Anya, tension pneumothorax, requires needle decompression at the second intercostal space in the midclavicular line."

After forging the signature of a resident doctor she had seen earlier, Bai Qiang held the medical record up, facing it directly toward the Ghost Doctor.

"Fang Anya has less than three minutes left in her emergency window! If you don’t go and perform the decompression right now, she will die instantly. You’re a doctor; you have to prioritize saving critical patients!"

After escaping last night, Bai Qiang had spent the whole night thinking carefully. She figured the Ghost Doctor had targeted her partly because she was unlucky and served as cannon fodder, but also definitely because she was an inpatient. Initially, the Ghost Doctor had tried to "treat" her leg according to the medical record. However, after she shouted that her brain was sick and in a much more serious condition than her leg, the Ghost Doctor had actually switched to treating her brain.

From this, she deduced that the doctor’s obsession was saving people—following medical records as well as the severity and urgency of the symptoms. And this Fang Anya was the Ghost Nurse’s name; she had seen the name tag in the Ghost Nurse’s memories.

Sure enough, the Ghost Doctor stopped.

Those pitch-black eye sockets stared at the name on the medical record, and the words coming from its mouth slowly changed.

"Patient Fang Anya... tension pneumothorax... needle decompression... emergency rescue..."

The Ghost Doctor’s target shifted, and it slowly turned around. But at that exact moment, Bai Qiang suddenly felt a bit unwilling to let it go. This Ghost Doctor was also a Special ghost in the building, and it definitely harbored key clues for the mission.

Throwing caution to the wind, Bai Qiang used her previous method to condense her spiritual power into a single strand and invaded the Ghost Doctor’s brain.

The Ghost Doctor’s body trembled, and Bai Qiang’s eyes widened in sheer astonishment. In less than three seconds, the Ghost Doctor vanished into thin air. The cold, gloomy domain dissipated with it. Bai Qiang gasped for air, the medical record in her hand shaking so violently that the pages went RUSTLE RUSTLE RUSTLE.

Although Bai Qiang was over eighty percent certain of her deduction, truly facing the Ghost Doctor still filled her with terror. The Blood Clan members of Chi Hai were all physical entities. As long as their hearts and brains were destroyed, they could be killed. Even if she couldn’t defeat them, she could always run away.

These ghostly things, however, had no physical bodies, and she had no idea how to completely kill them. They were elusive, rendering Extraordinary Abilities useless against them, and a single moment of carelessness could lead to her violent death.

Chinese-style horror completely trumped Western-style horror!

Bai Qiang didn’t dare to stick around. Taking advantage of the fact that the ghosts outside hadn’t swarmed in yet, she activated her Shadow Instant Teleportation, transforming into a puff of black smoke and leaving the public restroom.

Meanwhile, Yin Zhen unlocked the final two doors using two Universal Keys. One was her own, and the other had been replicated using the Half a Book—a single use cost five thousand words.

Pushing open the door to the ICU ward, she was met with a dark space permeated by a heavy stench of burnt flesh mixed with the smell of disinfectant. A burn patient wrapped in gauze lay on the hospital bed. Sensing someone entering, the exposed eyes looked over in panic.

However, Yin Zhen didn’t make eye contact with him. Instead, she noticed four corpses surrounding the bed—their clothes were completely intact, yet their bodies were charred and carbonized.

The names on their name tags... astonishingly belonged to the four nurses from the nurse’s station earlier!

A chill shot straight to the top of her head, but Yin Zhen didn’t go back to save the head nurse. Calmly, she picked up a syringe from a nearby medical cart and walked toward the bed. As long as she drew the patient’s blood, she could uncover the hidden truth behind the fire from ten years ago without needing him to say a word.

Just as the needle tip was about to touch the patient’s skin, a scorching wave of air rushed at her face, nearly setting her hair and eyelashes on fire!

Yin Zhen decisively stepped back. Thick, impenetrable black smoke rolled in, pouring into her mouth and nose with a fatal sense of suffocation. In an instant, she found herself plunged into a sea of fire, without a single escape route in sight.

"COUGH! COUGH COUGH!"

Choking on the thick smoke, Yin Zhen coughed violently as the four charred corpses on the ground suddenly began to move amid the firelight!

They climbed up stiffly. Their melted skin and fused clothing tore apart with their movements. Their faces were already burnt beyond recognition, leaving only pitch-black eye sockets and gaping mouths that let out silent, piercing shrieks as they lunged straight at Yin Zhen.

Without a moment’s hesitation, Yin Zhen swung her fire axe and ruthlessly cleaved it into the charred nurse leading the charge.
