I Stopped Simping and the Heroines Lost Their Minds

Chapter 195: Below the Playable Area

Arthur studied the open doorway.

In the game, this passage was a flat texture. It was just decorative background architecture meant to frame the edges of the crypt. No interaction prompt. No hidden quest. Nothing.

That bothered him far more than a collapsed ceiling or a relocated entrance.

"So?" Emily asked, watching him stare into the dark.

"So this part didn’t exist," Arthur said.

"The hallway is right there."

"You know what I mean."

Chloe knelt near the threshold, running her gloved fingers over the faint ward carvings framing the archway.

"Chisel marks," Chloe said, pointing to the deep gouges cutting through the lines. "Someone broke these intentionally. A long time ago."

They descended.

The architecture shifted within twenty feet. The ceiling dropped lower, forcing them to duck under the heavy support beams. The stonework grew rougher, lacking the polished masonry of the upper crypts, and the burial alcoves carved into the walls were wider and deeper. Faded, archaic saint symbols marked the intersections.

The air turned biting cold.

Arthur recognized the shift. This section felt like the original foundation, older than the polished shrine built above it.

Emily took point where the corridor narrowed, her gauntlets up and ready. When the passage opened enough to allow a clean draw, Arthur kept Whisperwind in his hand. Chloe stayed between them, her iron-shod staff resting against her shoulder.

They found the crypt guardian’s trail almost immediately.

Deep, heavy scrapes scarred the lower walls. Crushed bone fragments littered the floor where the creature had dragged its shattered sarcophagus lid through the tight turns.

They reached a rectangular chamber lined with heavy, sealed stone coffins. A worn relief of a kneeling saint watched from the far wall.

Arthur’s game memory offered him absolutely nothing.

Emily stepped forward.

Arthur grabbed her shoulder and pulled her back.

He scanned the floor. A thick, undisturbed blanket of dust covered the stones, but a faint, perfectly straight line broke the pattern near the center of the room. Tiny, dark holes punctuated the opposite wall at knee height. On the far side of the chamber, an old, desiccated corpse lay twisted at an awkward angle near a pillar.

It was a classic crypt defense.

Arthur activated Eagle Eye. Through the sharpened focus, he caught the dull glint of a nearly invisible wire stretched taut across the gap.

Arthur traced the wire toward the wall. It disappeared into a narrow slot beside the row of holes.

Emily followed his gaze to the wire.

"You were going to let me step on that, weren’t you?" Emily asked.

"I stopped you," Arthur said.

"Eventually."

Chloe looked at the twisted corpse from the doorway. "That one has been dead for decades."

"Step over it," Arthur said. "Don’t touch anything else."

They crossed one at a time, leaving the mechanism alone.

The trap stayed quiet. The coffins didn’t.

Heavy stone grated against stone.

Three coffin lids shifted.

The corpses rising from the boxes were heavily armored, wearing rusted partial plate and heavy chainmail. The closest one gripped a spiked iron mace. Another pulled itself up holding a corroded broadsword. A third crawled out late from a coffin near the back wall.

Arthur drew a physical arrow, moving left to keep a stone column between himself and the mace-wielder.

Emily closed the distance instantly. She slammed her gauntlets into the sword-wielder before it could fully clear its coffin, driving it back against the stone.

Chloe moved toward the wall, sweeping her staff to keep the third crawling corpse from flanking Emily.

Arthur stepped past the pillar and loosed his arrow. It struck the gap near the mace-wielder’s shoulder, punching through the chain beneath the plate. The creature stumbled but kept coming.

It swung the iron mace, shattering the edge of the stone column Arthur had just used for cover.

Arthur triggered Shadow Step.

His body vanished into the shadow beside the column and reappeared near the far wall, opening a clean firing lane behind the creature. He drew the bowstring, compressing raw mana into a Mana Quiver shaft, and drove the shot straight through the weak rusted chainmail at the back of its knee.

The leg buckled. Emily spun off her own target, stepped into the opening, and crushed the kneeling creature’s skull with a brutal downward strike.

The sword-wielder staggered behind a thick stone column.

At the same time, the crawler broke past Chloe and scrambled along the far side of an open coffin toward Emily’s back.

Arthur shifted right, trying to find the shot. The coffin blocked most of the crawler, while Emily kept moving across what little space remained.

He pushed Eagle Eye harder.

The narrow gap sharpened. Arthur caught the crawler’s hand scraping across the floor, then a sliver of exposed neck appeared between the coffin and Emily’s side.

He released.

The arrow passed through the gap, punched through the crawler’s neck, and buried itself in the spine. It collapsed beside Emily.

A blue notification flashed across his vision.

[Trait Proficiency Threshold Reached]

[Eagle Eye Lv.9 → Lv.10]

[Threshold Effect Unlocked: Focused Analysis]

Arthur ignored the text.

Emily caught the final standing corpse by its rusted breastplate and forced it backward over an open coffin. Her next punch caved in the side of its skull.

The room settled into silence.

Chloe walked over and checked Emily’s knuckles, then looked across the room at Arthur. Both of them were clean.

Arthur finally opened the waiting notification.

[Eagle Eye — Lv.10]

[Focused Analysis: Fine cracks, seams, wear, and subtle movement are easier to distinguish under focused observation.]

Arthur tested it.

He focused on the damaged stone column. Hairline cracks that would normally take a closer look stood out immediately, along with crumbling mortar between several blocks.

He swept his gaze across the rest of the chamber.

The far wall looked like solid, unbroken rock. Under the new focused analysis, Arthur spotted a faint vertical seam running floor-to-ceiling, a patch of mismatched mortar, and a worn scrape pattern along the base of the wall.

Arthur walked straight toward the seam.

Emily watched him. "Another lucky guess?"

"No," Arthur said.

Arthur followed the seam downward. Near waist height, one stone sat slightly deeper than the others.

He pressed it.

Something clicked behind the wall.

The concealed section ground inward, revealing a narrow passage descending into the dark.

They followed the tunnel downward until the rough stone finally gave way to finished masonry.

Arthur recognized the carved archways ahead.

The hidden route had reconnected with Saint Orlan’s personal burial wing. Arthur recognized this section. The crypt’s keeper patrolled somewhere nearby, carrying the first key to the Tomb of the Veiled Knife.

They moved quietly through the corridor, checking every branching alcove and burial recess, until they reached a final set of heavy double doors.

The doors stood wide open.

The chamber beyond was cavernous. An enormous stone sarcophagus rested on a raised dais in the center of the room, surrounded by burnt-out braziers and old offerings.

Kneeling on the stone steps before the tomb was a heavily armored figure gripping a blackened spear.

It hadn’t moved yet.

Arthur recognized the role instantly.

"That’s the keeper," Arthur said quietly.

Emily flexed her gauntlets. "Finally."

The armored corpse slowly raised its head.
