Chapter 674: Chapter 416: I Don’t Care if You Have a Big Shot Backing You
"Oh." Lin Li nodded and added, "I hear the Red Blood Gang lost quite a few men that night."
"Yes. Some members of the Red Blood Gang came to our shop for tea afterward, and I overheard them talking. They mentioned that they lost a lot of key members that night..." the waiter said.
Seeing the gloating smile on the waiter’s face, it was clear he had no love for the Red Blood Gang.
"The Red Blood Gang is always up to no good. Getting attacked by some unknown person and losing so many men... you could call it retribution," Lin Li said, then raised his cup and took a sip of tea.
Just as he’d thought, the waiter before him truly had no love for the Red Blood Gang; in fact, it was more than just dislike—you could say he was utterly disgusted by them.
"Those guys from the Red Blood Gang throw their weight around and prey on the innocent. Everyone was thrilled that so many of them died. It’s just a real shame their new Gang Leader didn’t die that night," the waiter said with a sigh of regret.
Lin Li recalled what Fang Jingtang, the Red Blood Gang’s Gang Leader, looked like and spoke in a detached tone.
"The new Gang Leader was lucky to survive that night. You could say he has good luck. But a person’s luck can’t hold out forever. Who’s to say that if the same thing happens again, he won’t end up dead."
The waiter nodded. "Let’s hope so! After that Fang Jingtang became Gang Leader, he’s been squeezing the workers at the docks even harder.
I heard he was a scholar before joining the Red Blood Gang. Who would’ve thought he’s even more black-hearted than the late Hong Jiu. All that studying was a complete waste."
The intelligence Lin Li had gathered previously did mention that Fang Jingtang held an academic title—he was a Scholar.
"The Red Blood Gang is pretty resilient. They lost that many men, yet afterward, it’s as if nothing happened. The entire gang is still operating in an orderly fashion."
The waiter thought about it for a moment, then lowered his voice and said quietly to Lin Li, "With so many of their lower-ranking bosses dead after that night, the Red Blood Gang should have fallen apart by all rights.
"The only reason they didn’t, supposedly, is because some big shot backing the Red Blood Gang stepped in to support them. That’s the only reason things are so stable now."
’So that’s why!’ Lin Li now understood how the Red Blood Gang was still able to function after his attack.
"This is all just hearsay, of course. There’s no way to verify if it’s true, so you should just listen for the sake of it, sir. Don’t take it too seriously," the waiter said with a laugh.
"Here, take this." Lin Li had gotten useful information from the waiter, so he wasn’t about to be stingy.
He reached into his pocket, pulled out a bill worth Fifty Copper Coins, placed it on the table, and gave it a slight push forward.
The waiter’s eyes went wide as he stared at the bill Lin Li pushed toward him, his delight plain to see. Nevertheless, he said, "I... I couldn’t possibly accept this."
Lin Li simply smiled and said nothing.
It was, after all, half a day’s wages. The waiter couldn’t possibly refuse. He reached out, took the tip, stuffed it into his pocket, and thanked Lin Li profusely.
Afterward, Lin Li chatted idly with the waiter for a few more moments. Once the waiter left, he picked up his teacup, turned to look out the window, and fixed his gaze on the distant docks controlled by the Red Blood Gang. Watching the bustling workers, he muttered to himself.
’A big shot?’
’You were the ones who came looking for me, trying to kill me. So as long as the Red Blood Gang still exists, this isn’t over. I don’t give a damn if you have some big shot backing you up.’
A pale golden Spiritual Light flashed between Lin Li’s fingers, followed by wisps of orange-red fire that flickered into existence out of thin air. The slightly cool tea in his hand slowly began to warm up.
