Chapter 35: Chapter 35: A New Face for a New Life

Ren finished the last of his tea and set the delicate cup down with careful precision, a plan already forming in his mind, simple and satisfying in a way none of his plans over the last several weeks had managed to be. He crossed to the small holographic panel near the suite’s entrance, the AI’s projection flickering back to life the moment he approached it.

"Question," Ren said, "is there a shopping district here? Somewhere I could actually buy proper clothes, maybe get a haircut too, something like that?"

"Certainly," the AI said, warm and immediately accommodating. "Halcyon Station’s central commerce district is within easy walking distance, featuring a wide range of boutiques, personal styling services, and salons catering to every conceivable preference. Would you like me to arrange a private transport, or would you prefer to explore on foot?"

"On foot’s fine," Ren said, already feeling lighter at the simple prospect of an ordinary, uncomplicated errand after weeks of nothing but crisis after crisis. "Can you point me in the right direction?"

"I can do considerably better than that," the AI said, and a small, sleek drone detached itself from a discreet charging port near the door, hovering at a comfortable pace beside him. "This unit will guide you directly and can assist with translations, purchases, and general navigation throughout your visit. Simply follow its lead."

The walk to the commerce district took less than fifteen minutes, and Ren spent the entire distance simply drinking in the sights around him, sleek architecture rising in elegant, curving lines on either side of wide, immaculately clean streets, warm sunlight filtering down through the massive ring’s shifting reflections overhead, and everywhere, the same quiet, unhurried luxury he’d found in his hotel suite, apparently woven into the very fabric of the entire planet.

The commerce district itself proved even more impressive than he’d expected, a sprawling, multi-level complex of boutiques and shops, all staffed by the same warm, efficient AI attendants he’d grown accustomed to since arriving, and Ren spent a genuinely delightful hour simply browsing, trying on clothes considerably finer than anything he’d worn since waking up in this body, sleek, well-tailored pieces in deep, rich colors that fit him, once properly adjusted by the boutique’s automated tailoring system, better than anything he could remember wearing in either of his lives.

He was midway through a particularly satisfying browse through a technology boutique, examining a small display of personal accessories, when a particular item caught his eye and held it entirely.

"What’s this," Ren asked, gesturing toward a sleek pair of glasses displayed beneath soft, focused lighting, their frames a striking, clear blue that seemed to shimmer faintly under the ambient light.

"Personal HUD interface glasses," the shop’s attendant AI explained, its projection materializing beside the display. "Capable of environmental scanning, biometric analysis, real-time translation, and a range of augmented reality functions, all controlled through subtle eye movement and voice command. Popular among our more tech-forward clientele."

Ren picked them up, turning them over in his hands, something about the sleek, futuristic design immediately, viscerally appealing to him in a way he couldn’t quite articulate. ’These are cool,’ he thought, slipping them on experimentally and watching a soft, translucent display flicker to life at the edge of his vision, cataloguing the boutique’s inventory with quiet, efficient precision. ’These are genuinely, actually cool. I don’t even need the scanning function right now, I just want to own something this ridiculously stylish.’

"I’ll take these," Ren said, grinning slightly at his own reflection in a nearby mirror, the glasses lending his face an entirely different quality, sharp and modern in a way that felt, satisfyingly, nothing at all like the version of himself currently being hunted across two star systems.

He purchased several outfits alongside the glasses, the shop’s system handling payment with smooth, discreet efficiency, and left the boutique considerably lighter in credits but genuinely, thoroughly pleased with his haul, the drone trailing quietly behind him carrying the bulk of his purchases while he carried only the glasses, unwilling to let them out of his own hands for even the short walk to his next destination.

The salon, when he found it, occupied a sleek, elegant space near the district’s central plaza, all soft lighting and calming, ambient music, and Ren settled into one of the plush styling chairs with a growing sense of anticipation, the plan that had been quietly forming since the moment he woke up finally ready to be properly executed.

"What can I do for you today," the salon’s attendant AI asked, its projection warm and professionally attentive as it studied his reflection in the mirror.

"I want it short," Ren said, running a hand through the long, familiar weight of red hair that had been driving him quietly insane for weeks now. "Considerably shorter than this. And I want it dyed. White, or silver, something close to that."

"An excellent choice for your coloring," the AI said, already pulling up a small holographic preview, adjusting the projected image of Ren’s face to show various potential styles and lengths. "Might I suggest something like this? Shorter through the sides, slightly longer on top, easily styled but with enough length to maintain some texture."

Ren studied the preview, something satisfied settling into his chest at the image staring back at him, sharp and different and entirely, blessedly unfamiliar. "Perfect," he said. "Let’s do it."

The process took the better part of an hour, careful, precise work that Ren watched unfold in the mirror with genuine, growing satisfaction, the long, deep red locks falling away in careful sections, the remaining length gradually shortened and shaped into something considerably sleeker and more practical, before the actual color treatment began, a gentle, warm sensation spreading across his scalp as the dye took hold, transforming the vibrant red into a clean, striking white that gleamed under the salon’s soft lighting.

When the stylist finally spun his chair back around to face the mirror properly, Ren barely recognized himself.

The white hair changed everything about his face, softening some angles while sharpening others, the deep violet of his eyes standing out considerably more starkly against the pale, silvery backdrop than they had against the deep red, and combined with the sleek, unfamiliar cut and the striking blue HUD glasses still perched on his nose, the reflection staring back at him bore only the faintest resemblance to the man who’d woken up in a Capital bed weeks ago, engaged to a stranger and terrified out of his mind.

’Nobody’s going to recognize this,’ Ren thought, turning his head slowly, examining the transformation from every angle with growing, genuine delight. ’Nobody. Not Yegard, not Reven, not my father, not a single officer from that outpost who spent the last several weeks whispering about the disgraceful Miller heir. This isn’t Rafayal Miller anymore. This is someone else entirely, someone new, someone with absolutely no history anyone here needs to know about.’

"You look thoroughly pleased," the AI observed, something warm and satisfied in its tone as it studied his reaction.

"I am," Ren said, grinning properly now, genuine and unguarded in a way he hadn’t allowed himself to be in longer than he could remember. "This is exactly what I wanted. Thank you, honestly, this is perfect."

He paid for the styling, tipped generously despite the slightly absurd novelty of tipping an artificial intelligence, and left the salon feeling lighter than he had in weeks, his reflection catching in every polished surface he passed on the walk back toward his hotel, each glimpse of the striking, unfamiliar white-haired stranger staring back at him settling his confidence further with every step. ’This is who I am now,’ he thought, adjusting the HUD glasses slightly as he walked, watching the soft, translucent display flicker faintly at the edge of his vision, cataloguing storefronts and pedestrian traffic with quiet, efficient precision he didn’t currently need but genuinely enjoyed having anyway. ’Not the villain. Not the disgraced heir. Not the strategic asset everyone back at that outpost was apparently already fighting over before I even had the chance to decide anything for myself.’

He reached his hotel suite as the afternoon sun began its slow, golden descent toward evening, the ring overhead catching the changing light in brilliant, shifting patterns, and caught his reflection one final time in the suite’s floor-to-ceiling windows, white hair gleaming, sharp new clothes fitting him considerably better than anything he’d worn since arriving in this world, blue HUD glasses perched perfectly on his nose.

’Nobody’s finding me here,’ he thought, settling into the plush seating with a deep, satisfied breath, already anticipating whatever the evening’s culinary district exploration might have in store for him next. ’Nobody. Not the Empire, not my father, not either of the two men currently, presumably, still working through whatever complicated tangle of feelings I left behind at that outpost without a proper explanation.’ He allowed himself a small, private smile at the thought, equal parts triumphant and quietly, deliberately unbothered. ’This is my new life. Rich, anonymous, and completely, blessedly free of anyone else’s expectations. I earned this. And I intend to enjoy every second of it.’
