Chapter 428: 428:A war.

Fire had discovered Divine Authority long before the others understood what it meant.

He learned that every true Sovereign carried a fragment. One fragment wasn’t enough to create complete divinity... but several?

Possibly.

And if enough Sovereigns died while their Authorities remained unclaimed...

Atheline stared at the ancient World Tree portrait.

"He could gather them."

Lilith followed his gaze.

"Using the tree."

He nodded.

The original World Tree hadn’t merely been sacred to the High Elves, it was connected to the entire world.

Its roots reached through ancient Aether veins across the original continent. It absorbed, circulated and redistributed enormous quantities of natural Aether. It touched nearly every major Law indirectly through the world itself.

It was the perfect core.

Fire’s plan became horrifyingly clear; create conflict, turn Sovereigns against one another, allow them to weaken each other, collect the Divine Authority released by their deaths, fhen use the World Tree and its connection to the world’s Aether as the foundation of an ascension ritual.

Godhood.

Atheline leaned against the table.

"How many did he need?"

"We don’t know." Lilith was reading another record. "But apparently more than he had."

Which explained the decisive battle. The memory from Doom Cave returned to Atheline; the Supreme Sovereign fighting Death and winning but fire approaching with the spear.

The strike through the heart had been a turning point.

He closed his eyes.

"He wasn’t helping Death."

Lilith looked toward him.

He could see it now.

"He needed both of them dead."

Death and the Supreme Sovereign, perhaps the two greatest Authorities remaining.

Fire hadn’t betrayed the Supreme Sovereign because he’d switched sides... he hadn’t been on anyone’s side.

The entire war was his ritual. Every Sovereign who died was another component, every battle was another opportunity, every alliance was temporary, and every betrayal served the same purpose.

Ascension.

Atheline opened his eyes.

"But the Supreme Sovereign survived the spear long enough to interfere."

That answer came from the final record. It was barely a record at all, a piece of blackened bark preserved inside crystal.

The moment Atheline touched it, the mysterious fragment inside his body reacted. He nearly dropped it.

Lilith caught his arm.

"What?"

"It recognizes this."

"Your fragment?"

Atheline nodded.

They placed the bark on the table. Ancient writing covered one side but only a few sentences remained readable. The High Elven scholar translated them slowly, then stopped, his face changing.

He already knew it was bad.

"Read it."

The scholar obeyed.

"The Flame gathered the fallen crowns beneath the First Tree.... The Supreme saw the truth."

Atheline’s heart pounded.

"The arrow pierced the heart of the rite."

Lilith’s eyes narrowed.

The scholar continued.

"The heavens opened." He swallowed. "The roots screamed."

Atheline felt cold.

"And the world..." the scholar stared at the final line. "...broke."

Nobody spoke for a long time.

He finally looked toward the portrait of the World Tree.

"The Cataclysm."

Lilith nodded.

It was a failed ascension. The Supreme Sovereign had discovered what Fire was doing, perhaps too late and he interfered with the ritual.

He struck its core but the ritual had already begun. Multiple fragments of Divine Authority; the World Tree, the world’s Aether veins, the accumulated deaths of Sovereigns, and perhaps Death’s corruption as well, all of it collapsed simultaneously.

The World Tree couldn’t contain it and neither could the world.

He walked toward the enormous ancient map hanging inside Klaith’s hidden room. It was one whole continent, the old world.

He placed another map beside it; the modern world with separated continents, different seas and entire races isolated from one another.

Atheline stared in confusion and shock.

"The land didn’t naturally divide."

Lilith approached.

"The ritual broke it."

He nodded.

Aether veins had ruptured and the original continent fractured, its pieces drifted apart.

Oceans formed between them and the races that had once lived relatively close together became separated across enormous distances.

Creatures that were exposed to the released Authorities and unstable Aether mutated became monsters or evolved into entirely new species.

Natural laws themselves were disrupted in certain regions and corruption entered the world.

Atheline stopped.

"Entered."

She looked at him.

He turned.

"Not created."

That distinction mattered.

The records never said the ritual created corruption, they said the failure opened something, something connected to Death.

It was something beyond the normal boundaries of the world. The Cataclysm gave corruption a path inside.

Atheline remembered the Blood Ocean, corrupted creatures appearing without contamination routes, villages disappearing and speaking creatures.

His return.

"The ritual failed." Lilith’s voice was quiet. "But Fire didn’t necessarily die."

Atheline looked toward her.

They both thought of the same thing; the seal, chains, flames, Klaith, and a Death Core.

His stomach tightened.

"No."

Lilith frowned.

"What?"

"We’re still missing something." He moved toward the records. "If Fire survived, why wait this long?"

No answer.

"If he’s the one they mean by ’His return,’ why does corruption obey him?"

Still nothing.

"And why does Klaith, someone obsessed with resurrecting your brother, have anything to do with completing what Fire started?"

Lilith’s expression hardened.

Atheline shook his head.

"We have the history."

But not the entire conspiracy, that distinction was important. They now knew what had happened thousands of years ago but they didn’t yet know precisely what was happening now.

He looked at the portrait again.

The Sovereign of Fire stood at the edge; watching, planning and waiting while everyone else destroyed one another.

Atheline’s hands slowly clenched as he thought of everything that had happened. Even the recurrence that eventually ended in Nirvana might trace its suffering back to this moment.

One man’s attempt to become a god.

Atheline understood something else. The Unaspected Ruin had told him about Unnamed Gods for a reason. Those who attempted ascension but failed to establish complete divinity.

His gaze sharpened.

"Fire tried to become a true god."

Lilith nodded.

"And failed."

"Which means..."

Neither finished, they didn’t need to. Perhaps this was how an Unnamed God was born, perhaps not.

They still lacked enough evidence.

Atheline refused to make the same mistake history had made, turning incomplete information into certainty, but the possibility was there.

And it terrified him.
