I Refused The Male Lead And Got Claimed By His Triplet Sisters [GL]
Chapter 138: The cost of control
Qingyue had always been the one who did not falter. Even as a child, when grief came too early, she had learned to hold herself still while everything else broke apart.
The late Empress’s death had come with a suffocating silence that threatened to swallow Qingyue and her sisters whole.
There had been no time to be soft after that. No space to grieve in the way children should. While her sisters wept, Qingyue had watched. While they reached for comfort, she had measured what remained and what could be saved.
Control had not been a choice. It had been survival.
She had learned quickly that hesitation invited loss, that emotion when left unchecked made people careless.
So she buried it, piece by piece, until what remained was a gaping hole where her heart should have been.
While her sisters leaned into each other in their own unique ways to survive the suffocating walls of the palace, Qingyue stood apart just enough to see it clearly.
She learned the patterns of power, the unspoken rules, the dangers hidden beneath polite smiles and silk robes.
She made plans, adjusted them, made them again. Every step she took was measured, every risk already calculated. It was because of that the three of them had survived all these years.
Even now, in exile...when everything they had once known had been stripped away, that part of her had not changed at all.
If anything, it had only grown stronger. Someone had to think ahead. Someone had to remain unmoved when the ground shifted beneath them.
While her sisters adapted in their own ways, while they allowed themselves to be drawn into things beyond necessity, Qingyue remained constant.
Unyielding. Untouched.
Even Ru Yi had not changed that.
From the beginning, Qingyue had kept her distance because she knew Ru Yi was trouble. She had observed, assessed, understood the pull Ru Yi seemed to have on those around her without letting herself fall into it.
She saw the way her sisters gravitated towards her, the way their attention shifted, the way their world seemed to reorient itself around her presence.
Qingyue had not allowed that to happen to her. She had maintained clarity where others lost it. Maintained control where others let go.
Falling in love for the triplets was the most dangerous thing that could happen to the triplets, and Qingyue made sure she didn’t become a victim.
Until now.
The room felt small. Too warm.
It carried a weight that pressed in from all sides, thick with expectation and something undeniable that existed in the space between them.
Her entire attention was fixed elsewhere.
On Ru Yi.
She’d been able to push down her feelings in the past, but now it flowed out of her in waves that threatened to swallow her whole.
Ru Yi stood only a step away, but it felt closer than that. Like the space between them had already been erased by something neither of them had fully acknowledged yet.
There was tension in her posture, in the slight rise and fall of her breath, in the way her gaze flickered between Qingyue’s eyes and then away again. Unsure where to rest.
She felt it too.
Qingyue knew it without needing confirmation.
The sound of her heart beating too fast roared in her ears, louder than the movement of the dancers in the other room. But it was all wrong.
She was not the type to lose control like this.
Yet...she couldn’t look away.
Her thoughts tried to reassert themselves, tried to rebuild the careful structure she had always relied on.
Instead all she could think about was the slender curve of Ru Yi’s neck as she stood in front of her. She’d wondered often, how those soft lips of hers tasted.
A few nights ago she’d been unfortunate to hear Ru Yi’s whimpers while she was in the tent with Yexue. She had wondered then how Ru Yi would sound when she was under her.
Would those breathless gasps belong to her too? Was that broken whimper hers to share?
Qingyue let her eyes drift from Ru Yi’s collarbone to the swell of her breasts. She tilted her head without being conscious of the movement.
This wasn’t her. And it wasn’t the alcohol either.
It was something stronger— a force that she could not name.
Qingyue felt like she had been cast under a spell. She exhaled slowly. "The others will be waiting for us," she managed to say between gritted teeth. "They’ll worry that we’ve been away for far too long." Her voice sounded strained even to her own ears.
She took a step forward despite her words.
No– she needed to step back. But her body did not obey, like it belonged to tension charged between the two women.
"Ru Yi..." it was a plea. "You should leave first."
Ru Yi lips parted slowly which was a strong contrast to her racing heart. She’d never seen Qingyue look so conflicted before.
Not when they’d faced bandits, not when she’d slain men like it was the most normal thing in the world.
She knew the magnetic force between them was not one side.
The only difference between Qingyue and Ru Yi was that Ru Yi did not particularly take pride in her self control. If anything she was lacking in the very department.
There was also something electrifying about watching Qingyue struggle to regain a shred of that control.
The usual calm expression she usually wore was replaced by the look of divine need. She might not be aware of it, but her eyes kept drifting to Ru Yi’s lips and the dip right under her collarbone.
It made Ru Yi wonder what it would be like for that control to snap. She wondered what type of lover Qingyue would be.
She took a step forward, every other thought pushed to the back of her head. She was going to find out who Qingyue was without all those layers of self preservation that she smothered herself with.
It cost her only four precise steps forward, before she grabbed Qingyue’s neck and smashed her lips down on hers in a damning kiss.
