I Inherited a Ruined Guild and the Strongest Women Wont Leave Me Alone
Chapter 53: Mossdeep Costs Extra
Mossdeep cost five silver three copper before anyone took a single step underground.
Elara wrote the total at the bottom of the page, circled it once, and looked across the request table at Cassian Rell.
"Again," she said.
Cassian had arrived shortly after first bell with Veyra, a narrow contract case, and a human guide whose grey-streaked hair had been cut with a knife rather than patience.
The guide placed a brass license on the table.
**RUSK AMBERLANE — LOWER GALLERIES — SHALLOW ROUTES**
"Eight copper," Rusk said. "That is Sovereign’s share of my guide fee for two people, from the public descent gate to the last licensed lower marker and back. No unrecorded turns. No chasing noises. No searching for a platform somebody remembers after dark."
Maelis sat beside him, not on Sovereign’s side of the table.
"His license is current," she said. "His refusal is part of the service."
Ren nodded. "Eight for the guide."
Elara wrote it in the first row.
Cassian opened his case. "The Vadd Mossdeep Lease Office controls Day Twenty-Seven’s dawn window under its recorded gate lease. Six copper for your two entries."
The name tightened something behind Ren’s ribs.
Maelis saw it.
"A lease proves gate control," she said. "It does not prove who moved a brambleback, changed a map, packed a seal, harmed a patient, or ordered anything hidden."
"Then six copper for access," Ren said. "Nothing else."
Elara wrote the second row.
Veyra pushed three inspection tags forward. "Seven copper for two lamp harnesses, two ropes, masks, spore covers, and air markers. Hired, not sold. Damage beyond ordinary wear comes from the deposit."
"And the command?" Ren asked.
"Mine," Veyra said. "If the offer is accepted. Five copper as your team’s share. Below the gate, my abort ends the descent. Your title does not reopen it."
"Good."
Her eyebrow moved.
"That was fast."
"I have learned that surviving an order is cheaper than arguing with one."
Rusk made a sound that might have been approval.
Elara wrote seven and five.
"Healer," Maelis said.
Cassian turned one page. "Seven copper availability fee."
The line beneath it was blank.
Ren tapped the blank with his left forefinger. "Whose availability?"
"The hall has a qualified healer."
"The hall has seven people under responsibility, and that healer is also treating my wrist. Sylvaine has not offered expedition service."
Cassian’s expression did not change. "Then name another before acceptance."
"The contract names one," Maelis said. "A rate is not a person. A treating healer is not spare equipment."
Veyra took the pen from Cassian and added a condition beneath the empty line.
**VOID UNLESS A QUALIFIED HEALER FREELY SIGNS AVAILABILITY BEFORE ACCEPTANCE.**
"Better," Ren said.
"More expensive than assumption," Cassian replied.
"Most honest things are."
The next costs came faster.
Three copper for numbered evidence packets, sealed at the gate and delivered through the provincial custody route. Four for the risk premium. One silver as a refundable gate deposit, less documented loss or damage. Three copper for provincial coordination and matching the final participant list against the licensed route.
Ren counted the charge column. "The premium and deposit both price risk. Why both?"
"Because they answer different failures," Veyra said. "The premium buys the underwriter’s response if a covered injury or loss occurs. The deposit pays for broken gate hardware, missing hired gear, or a delayed gate crew before anyone argues with an underwriter."
"And if we return everything?"
"The full silver returns after inspection."
"No fee for holding it?"
"None."
Elara marked the silver as cash required but potentially recoverable.
"Refundable does not mean available," she said.
Elara kept separate columns for charges and refundable money.
"Salvage?" she asked.
Cassian slid out another sheet. "One silver two copper for a limited share after evidence release."
Ren did not touch it.
"Remove it."
Rusk studied him. "Most new dungeon crews ask what they can carry out before they ask how they leave."
"We are going down to verify a danger," Ren said. "If we find property, material, or evidence, it can remain somebody else’s argument until custody is clean."
Elara drew a hard line through the salvage option.
"No Sovereign salvage under this offer."
"Agreed," Cassian said. "Amber Shield’s rights remain separate. You receive no share through us."
"Artifact equipment?" Veyra asked.
Ren kept his right wrist still against his chest.
"The Cuff stays here."
"It is not listed," Elara said. "Neither is Brinna’s bridge blank, her repair framework, or any money under it."
Cassian glanced at the inactive stamped copy filed in the hall’s contract case.
"I did not offer to finance your repair."
"And expedition pressure will not call it off," Ren said.
Maelis turned the completed price sheet around.
"Read what this is."
Ren did.
Rusk was a proposed guide, not an assigned one. The Vadd office had offered a scheduled gate window, not transferred access. Veyra’s command began only after acceptance and ended with the operation. The healer line had a price but no person. Evidence had a route but no receiving name yet. The deposit had not been paid. Provincial coordination had not approved a participant list.
Nothing on the page gave Sovereign Guild permission to descend.
"Suppose the gate closes before entry," Ren said.
Rusk answered first. "No descent, no guide fee."
Veyra tapped the other rows. "No gear or command fee. Healer availability is owed only if the named healer reports as agreed. Access and coordination refund except one copper for an already-filed notice. The risk premium remains unearned until the manifest is accepted."
Cassian’s mouth thinned. "You are negotiating an offer you cannot fund."
"I am learning whether failure costs more than we can survive."
"It is an offer that can still fail safely," Ren said.
Maelis nodded. "Now it resembles planning."
Cassian signed the Amber Shield side. Rusk stamped the guide window. Veyra initialed the command and abort condition.
"Two spaces," Cassian said. "Day Twenty-Seven at dawn. I hold them until second bell today. Then I cut Sovereign from the manifest and fill them elsewhere."
He pushed the unsigned offer toward Elara.
She did not reach for the guild seal.
"Five silver three copper due on acceptance," she said. "One silver of that is refundable later. We possess one silver six copper."
"You have revenue," Cassian said.
"We also have two silver three copper already payable," Elara replied. "Old obligations do not vanish because a new door looks exciting."
Silence settled over the table.
Ren looked at the nine rows, then at the deadline.
The offer was lawful. The route was bounded. Every specialist could refuse. No one had hidden a favor inside a blank line.
They were still six silver short of paying what they already owed and taking it.
Ren pulled the request bell closer.
"Leave the offer."
Cassian’s gaze sharpened. "You cannot accept it."
"Not yet." Ren set the bell where anyone entering the hall could reach it. "But I know exactly what has to be earned before second bell."
