Chapter 2236 - 2229: Soul Hunter Division

  • Next Chapter

The fleet will set off at dawn tomorrow, with a total of four spaceships. Zhang Menglong and the other three Soul Hunters have been assigned to one ship each.

Zhang Menglong was assigned to the No. 4 warship, which is relatively in the rear. Although the boss has some trust in Zhang Menglong, it’s not very much, suggesting there might still be a hint of uncertainty in his mind.

Each ship’s staffing is very complete, with a captain, two vice-captains, and many other crew members. Although they are just transport ships, they still have basic attack and defense systems.

Of course, these capabilities are completely useless against these mysterious attackers, and there are no effective means to prevent such attacks.

The captain is a woman named Eno. She is a very intellectual woman, tall and with long hair. When Zhang Menglong came to greet her, she was engrossed in a book.

Unlike the other Soul Hunters, she did not look down on Zhang Menglong because of his superficial strength; her expression almost did not change at all.

"If we encounter danger, I hope Mr. Zhang can protect our ship and its belongings," Eno said, putting down her book and extending her hand confidently towards Zhang Menglong.

"Of course, I will do my best," Zhang Menglong said, shaking her soft, fair hand, finding it hard to imagine this was the hand of a female captain.

Zhang Menglong greeted the other staff members and then returned to his room.

"Gou Dan, what do you think those beings that attack souls actually are?" Zhang Menglong asked while browsing through various information.

To date, some have survived attacks from these unknown creatures, quite a few actually. Soul Silver, although not a common metal, is carried by many strong individuals exploring their bodily limits for emergencies, and it is not expensive, thus fairly common.

According to those people, during the attacks, they never saw anything, but could clearly feel the presence of what was attacking them. It felt as if a chill wind hit, followed by a pain that reached deep into their soul.

This description sounds quite mystical, almost like ghost stories.

But in this world of advanced science, ghosts and souls are no longer mere myths; they exist as pseudo-life forms in the form of energy.

However, while ordinary people cannot perceive souls or ghosts, beings at the transcender life level can certainly feel their presence.

Yet with these life forms, they can only subtly sense them, which is very strange. So they are definitely not existing in the form of spiritual bodies.

[Without seeing them with my own eyes, I can’t make a judgment either,] Gou Dan replied.

"It’s really peculiar. Seems like we can only take things one step at a time and adapt as we go," Zhang Menglong said, realizing he couldn’t understand the enemy, so he could only be as prepared as possible.

Cross, Peach Wood Sword, black dog blood...

No matter ancient or modern, Zhang Menglong took out all those items said to deal with malevolent beings, even though he knew they were most likely ineffective against this enemy.

...

"Fleet, set off!" As dawn broke the next day, with Xiyak’s notification, the entire fleet officially set off.

This gathering place is very close to the Moruo Holy Nation’s border. When crossing that line, Zhang Menglong almost clearly felt the temperature around him plummet, as if he had entered an ice cave.

Yet the thermometer on the spaceship showed that the surrounding environment didn’t really drop, which felt more like a psychological sensation. Like in the dark, when no one is around you, but you suddenly hear someone call your name—wouldn’t that send chills down your spine?

There is also a saying that humans have a yang energy, which weakens or extinguishes when encountering unclean things, causing an abnormal cold sensation.

"Damn, this is bizarre," Zhang Menglong shivered. From his experience, the entire Moruo Holy Nation felt like it was covered by a barrier, though not one that seemed to be for locking things out, "Who did this? It’s too eerie."

Zhang Menglong walked to the ship’s control room to find the female captain commanding the ship, a hot cup of tea in her hand.

"Captain, did you just feel something?"

"You mean a chill?" Eno said, "I thought I was the only one feeling it, but I didn’t say anything because the thermometer readings were still quite normal."

"Is this your first time on this route, Captain?" Zhang Menglong asked.

"Hundreds of times," Eno laughed, "But I recently took a long trip, just returned three months ago, and didn’t expect such overwhelming changes in the Moruo Holy Nation."

"With your abilities, Captain, you could fit in anywhere, right?"

"Not quite," Eno shook her head, "I’m a Moruo Holy Nation citizen. My roots are here. No matter how dangerous, I cannot abandon my country. Now I am doing something for my nation."

During the conversation, Zhang Menglong learned that Eno didn’t charge any fees for this journey. She was doing it purely for love.

"Do you know, Captain Eno, what the situation is in the entire country now?" Zhang Menglong asked. If something like this happened in his own country, the social order would likely be in chaos.

"Actually, the whole country hasn’t been greatly affected," Eno said, "Those beings attacking souls seem to not target ordinary people, but only those at a Beginner level or above, and nobody knows why."

"Maybe the souls of Beginners and above are more delicious," Zhang Menglong speculated.

If it really is the remnant souls of ancient humans acting, then the attackers are likely collecting soul energy for them. But the soul energy of ordinary people is too weak, probably even attacking a thousand or ten thousand of them wouldn’t equal the weakest Beginner, so there’s no need to waste time on it.

"Now every Beginner-level and above individual basically moves in groups, but even so, sometimes a large number die at once. However, many Soul Hunters have arrived; though none have killed any attacker yet, they have some preventive or repelling methods. A national Soul Hunter department has even been established."

"Oh?" Zhang Menglong was quite interested in this Soul Hunter department.

"Are you interested in joining, Mr. Zhang?" Eno smiled, "I heard the Soul Hunter department is very popular now and well-treated, but their selection threshold is very high."

"I am somewhat interested," Zhang Menglong was about to continue when suddenly all the hairs on his body stood up, "Captain, do you feel something is approaching us?"
