The street moved again. This time everyone saw it.

Nate was standing beside the displaced tram when the asphalt twenty metres ahead split along a line that hadn’t existed a second earlier. People screamed and backed away.

The road didn’t collapse. One half slid. Cars moved with it. A streetlight crossed almost three metres without bending at the base. A parked delivery van followed. The buildings on either side remained exactly where they were.

Then the movement stopped. Silence lasted maybe two seconds. A water main burst beneath the intersection.

Dorn pointed toward the evacuation line. "Get them back!"

Darek grabbed the nearest municipal worker. "Move everyone east. Don’t use the tram road."

"Why?"

"Because it just moved."

That was enough. Nate helped pull an old man away from the curb while the first wave of water spread across the street.

His terminal still showed the Reclamation Network.

VAULT NODES RESPONDING: 4

Three corrupted identifiers. One intact.

WB-17PATTERN STATUS: RETAINED

He couldn’t stop looking at it.

Darek noticed. "Put that away."

"It’s in Sector Three."

"So are several problems trying to kill people."

"WB-17 is still there."

Darek caught Nate’s shoulder. Not hard. Enough to make him look up. "Do you see that building?"

Nate followed his gaze. Building Twelve. People were still trapped above the displaced stairwell.

"Yes."

"Remember it." Darek released him. "Warbody can wait."

Nate hated that he needed the reminder. He put the terminal away.

They went back inside.

The fifth floor no longer connected to the fourth. Nate learned that after climbing the outside maintenance balcony, breaking through another apartment and finding a corridor that ended in open air.

Not a broken wall. Open air. The fifth-floor hallway continued on the opposite side of a gap almost four metres wide. Below it should have been the fourth floor. Instead Nate could see the street.

Darek stopped beside him. "Absolutely not."

Nate looked across. A woman was crouched on the other side. Selia. The husband downstairs had given them a description. Red shirt. Dark hair. She had one arm around a boy maybe eight years old. Behind them, smoke filled the corridor.

"Can you jump?" Darek called.

Selia looked at the gap. "No."

The boy was crying. Darek checked above them. The ceiling had started darkening from the fire.

Nate looked at the gap again. Four metres. Maybe slightly less. The opposite floor was twenty centimetres higher. His First Circuit could get him across. Probably. Getting someone back was different.

Darek followed his eyes. "No."

"You’ve said that a lot today."

"Because you keep having bad ideas."

"We need a line."

"From what?"

Nate looked around the apartment they’d entered through. Dining table. Curtains. Furniture. Nothing useful.

Then he saw the exterior maintenance rail. Steel. Bolted into the wall.

Darek saw it too. "That’s not rated for this."

"It doesn’t need to be."

"For what?"

Nate drew Graveshare. Darek’s expression got worse. "Nate."

"Mourning Edge cuts the rail."

"That’s the part I understood."

"We bridge the gap."

"With a railing."

"Yes."

"That’s your plan."

"Do you have another?"

Smoke rolled across the opposite corridor. Selia coughed. Darek looked at her. Then at the rail. "Cut the long section."

Nate formed Mourning Edge. The reserve dipped. He cut through the first mounting point. Darek tore the next two free instead of wasting more Graveshare.

Together they dragged the rail inside. It was almost five metres long. Heavy. Darek took one end. Nate took the other.

"Don’t drop it."

"I wasn’t planning to."

"Your plans have been excellent."

They pushed it across. The far end struck the opposite floor. Selia stared at it. "You want us to walk on that?"

"No," Darek said. "I want the kid to crawl."

That somehow sounded worse. But the ceiling behind her cracked. Selia moved. She put the boy down first.

Darek crouched at their end. "Hands around both sides. Don’t stand."

The boy crawled.

Halfway across, the building shifted. Nate felt it before the rail moved. He grabbed the metal. The opposite corridor dropped. Only a few centimetres. The boy screamed. His hands slipped.

Darek caught his wrist. The rail tilted.

Nate’s First Circuit opened. His restored shoulder took the load. No pain. His boots slid toward the edge.

The unfinished mid-step timing was useless here. Killing Step was useless. Second Vector sat in reserve, equally useless unless Nate gave up the empty Node.

He didn’t. He lowered his weight and pulled.

The boy came over the edge. Darek shoved him behind them. "Your turn!"

Selia crawled. The fire suppression finally activated behind her, water spraying from a pipe aimed directly at the wall. She reached halfway.

Another vibration. Nate looked down. The street beneath the gap was changing. The displaced section started moving back.

"Fast!"

Selia tried. The two halves of the building shifted relative to one another. The rail scraped sideways. Her left hand slipped.

Nate dropped to one knee and caught the sleeve of her shirt. Fabric tore. He caught her wrist instead. Her whole weight hit his shoulder. The joint held. Relief flooded him hard enough that it took effort not to laugh.

Then the floor beneath him moved. Darek grabbed his vest. Between them they pulled Selia across.

The railing fell. It vanished into the gap. Nate didn’t hear it hit the street.

He looked down. The opening was gone. Concrete filled the space below them now. Not rubble. A ceiling.

Darek looked too. "Don’t."

"I didn’t say anything."

"I know."

They took Selia and the boy downstairs. By the time Building Twelve was clear, Western Command had lost contact with two underground teams.

The city wasn’t evacuating anymore. It was dividing. Red zones appeared on every municipal display. Some streets remained usable. Others ended somewhere different than the maps claimed. Power failed across three western blocks. Then returned in one of them with every light operating at twice its normal output.

Emergency crews were overwhelmed.

Nate expected Dorn to send him to another building. Instead she found him beside a medical tent. "We’re going back."

"Western Access?"

"Sector Three."

Nate looked at her. "WB-17?"

Dorn’s expression hardened. "We lost a Survey relay and a Field Command team. Your archive obsession is not the priority."

Darek approached behind her. "Who?"

"Harven’s unit."

Nate recognized the name. Lieutenant Harven. Varen escort.

"How many?"

"Five."

"Signal?"

"One intermittent."

Dorn checked her terminal. "The network event opened a route that didn’t exist this morning. It points toward one of the active vault nodes."

Nate looked at the city behind them. Building Twelve remained standing. For now.

"Which node?"

Dorn knew why he was asking. She didn’t answer.

Darek did. "Four."

Nate’s terminal still had the old list. Four nodes. WB-17 had been the only readable identifier.

Dorn looked at Darek. He shrugged. "He’d find out underground."

"Fine." She turned to Nate. "Listen carefully. We are going in for Harven’s people."

"Understood."

"If WB-17 is sitting on a table beside them, you still help the people first."

Nate met her eyes. "Understood."

Dorn watched him for another second. Then handed him a helmet. "Try meaning it."

Western Access had changed completely. The main gate still existed. Everything behind it looked wrong. One corridor had narrowed enough that the walls nearly touched. Another opened into a maintenance platform Nate had never seen. Old Service black paneling appeared in places that had been bare concrete that morning.

A Field Command marker had been painted on the floor.

ROUTE V4

Someone had added underneath:

VALID 14 MIN AGO

Nate looked at it. Darek saw him. "Encouraging."

The team was small. Dorn. Darek. Tessa. Nora. Nate. Two Second Circuit Field Command soldiers Nate didn’t know.

Nobody talked much once they crossed the old survey boundary. The farther they went, the stronger the pressure from Forsaken Claim became. It wasn’t constant. It came in patches. Nate passed one wall and felt almost nothing. Ten metres later:

REJECTED RESONANCE DETECTED

Two more steps. Gone. Then again. The messages weren’t coming from one point. The place itself seemed contaminated with them.

Tessa stopped at a junction. "Harven’s beacon." A dot appeared. Fifty-eight metres ahead.

Dorn moved. The corridor dropped sharply. Black panels replaced every visible surface. Nate touched the wall as he passed. Warm.

The next room contained bodies. Two. Field Command uniforms. Nora reached the first. Then stopped. "Dead."

The second had been dragged against the wall. His chest armor was torn open. Nate recognized the damage. The creature from the breach.

Dorn crouched beside him. "Harven?"

"No." One of the Second Circuits checked the identification. "Malek and Sorn."

Darek looked toward the next passage. "Three left."

Something scraped in the dark. Everyone raised weapons. Nothing came.

Then a voice. "Captain?"

Dorn moved immediately. Harven appeared around the bend with one arm hanging uselessly, blood covering half his uniform, a woman supporting him. Only two.

Dorn looked behind them. "Fifth?"

Harven shook his head. "Didn’t make it."

Nora reached him. "Sit."

"We can’t."

"You can."

"No." Harven grabbed Dorn’s arm. "There’s a door."

Dorn glanced at him. "Behind you?"

"Further in."

"Why were you further in?"

"The corridor moved behind us."

"Of course it did."

Harven was breathing badly. He pointed past them. "Something opened when the network came online."

Nate felt Forsaken Claim pulse again. Strong.

Harven looked at him. "Calder?"

"Yeah."

"You feel that?"

Nate stopped. "What?"

Harven swallowed. "Pressure."

Dorn looked between them. "Explain."

Harven shook his head. "Can’t."

His partner answered. "Our Skills started reacting near the door."

"How?"

"Mine tried to activate."

"By itself?"

"Not fully." Harven looked at his useless arm. "Mine did."

Dorn’s attention sharpened. "What Skill?"

"Hold Line."

Nate remembered it from the Varen roster. Defensive stabilization. "What happened?"

Harven looked toward the passage. "It wasn’t mine for a second."

Nobody had an answer to that.

They should have evacuated. Dorn sent Harven and his partner back with Nora and one of the Second Circuits. Then she kept moving.

Darek looked at her. "I thought people first."

"We found the people."

"You’re enjoying this."

"No."

"You’re lying badly."

Dorn ignored him. Nate followed.

The pressure increased. His empty third Node began to ache. Second Vector remained separate in reserve. For the first time, Nate was glad he hadn’t integrated it.

The passage ended after thirty metres. Harven had been right. There was a door. Huge. More like a vault seal. Imperial crest in the centre. Most of the markings had been scraped away. One remained legible.

RECLAMATION STORAGE

Tessa stepped closer. "Vault Four."

Nate looked for WB-17. Nothing.

The door had no handle. Dorn searched the control panel. Dead. Tessa connected a portable power cell. The panel flickered. Old text appeared.

NETWORK RESTORED

Then:

VAULT 04

A directory populated. Most entries corrupted. Nate saw the same names from the Field Unit archive. Some marked depleted. Some failed. Then:

WB-17PATTERN RETAINED

His pulse jumped. The next line hurt more.

PHYSICAL STORAGE CONFIRMED

It was here. Not an eighty-year-old database entry. Not a dead record.

Warbody still existed behind that door.

Darek read the display. "So that’s your miracle Skill."

"I didn’t call it that."

"You’ve been thinking it loudly."

Dorn looked back. "Can we open it?"

Tessa searched the controls. "Maybe."

"Maybe how?"

"It wants authorization."

"Which we don’t have."

"Correct."

Nate looked at the console. There was another port beneath it. Same shape as the maintenance connection on Field Unit 03.

"Portable unit."

Tessa saw it too. Her face changed. "The Field Unit could authenticate."

Dorn looked at her. "It’s on the surface."

"Yes."

"Better." Nate frowned. "Better?"

Dorn turned away from the vault. "Because that means we’re not opening an eighty-year-old experimental Skill repository during a city-wide structural event."

A heavy impact came from the other side of the door. Everyone stopped. Another. The vault shook.

Darek raised his weapon. "Apparently something disagrees."

The third impact dented the seal outward. Not inward. Whatever was hitting it was already inside.

Tessa backed away. Dorn opened her Circuit. "Move."

The vault door bent.

Nate drew Graveshare. Forsaken Claim exploded across his vision. Not one detection. Dozens.

REJECTED RESONANCE DETECTED

The messages stacked too quickly to read. His empty Node burned.

And behind the metal, something screamed.

The vault seal ruptured.
