Chapter 64: Chapter 64: He Is Injured

"It has been a bit busy." Lu Zhengchuan reflexively nodded. When he saw the unhappy look on her face, he quickly tried to explain, "The mission is rather dangerous, so I have to make sure everything is planned meticulously to avoid any mistakes."

Hearing his last sentence, Su Wan felt that she was being a little unreasonable.

’That’s right, he’s busy with a life-or-death mission. Why am I still hung up on him not contacting me for so long?’

Su Wan shook her head. All her anger dissipated, and along with it, her expectations for Lu Zhengchuan.

"I see. You must have worked hard."

"...You’re not angry anymore?" Lu Zhengchuan asked cautiously.

Su Wan shook her head. "There’s nothing to be angry about. Zheng Zhizhi just gave me a scare. The important thing is that the baby’s alright."

"I’ll borrow a bike to take you to the clinic." Lu Zhengchuan’s worried gaze also landed on her belly.

Su Wan had no intention of making things harder on herself. At his words, she nodded and stopped walking.

"Go on, then. I’ll wait for you."

After Lu Zhengchuan nodded, he turned and quickly walked away.

Su Wan found a stone bench by the roadside and sat down.

She didn’t have to wait long before Lu Zhengchuan returned, riding an old-fashioned roadster.

Su Wan couldn’t help but frown when she saw that the bicycle was a bit dirty.

Quick to react, Lu Zhengchuan pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and wiped down the rear rack.

Her expression satisfied, Su Wan walked over and settled onto the back.

After she sat down, however, Lu Zhengchuan didn’t move.

"Wrap your arms around my waist," Lu Zhengchuan reminded her. ℴ

Su Wan’s eyes fell on his waist. She was surprised to notice his clothes were clean and he still seemed faintly damp, as if he’d just taken a shower.

She said, "It’s fine. I’ll hold onto the seat."

Lu Zhengchuan looked back at her, his eyes disapproving. "You’re pregnant. It’s safer to hold onto me."

"...I’m holding the hem of your shirt. Just go." Su Wan grabbed the bottom of his shirt with both hands. She realized she couldn’t quite bring herself to have physical contact with Lu Zhengchuan right now. It might be a temporary feeling, but she wasn’t going to make herself uncomfortable.

Lu Zhengchuan’s lips pressed into a thin line. He wasn’t a fool; he could see the distance in Su Wan’s eyes.

After a moment of silence, he tightened his grip on the handlebars and started pedaling toward the clinic.

Only, he rode at a snail’s pace—so slow it left Su Wan speechless.

People in the military compound who saw them were intrigued by their crawling pace and glanced over curiously.

All the stares made Su Wan’s skin crawl. She slapped his back. "Go faster."

"No, it’s too dangerous to go fast." Lu Zhengchuan shook his head with a straight face. "You’re pregnant, and you just had a scare. I should have brought the car."

Su Wan was speechless.

’He doesn’t really think that’s going to make me wrap my arms around his waist, does he?’

"Oh."

Su Wan replied calmly and sat quietly on the back of the bike, not saying another word.

Lu Zhengchuan couldn’t resist looking back. Seeing Su Wan’s lack of reaction, he couldn’t take it anymore and abruptly stopped the bike.

Su Wan looked up in surprise.

Lu Zhengchuan steadied the bicycle, then walked the few steps to Su Wan. He wrapped his arms around her waist and, with surprising ease, lifted her up—all one hundred and ten pounds of her.

Su Wan was startled by his action and instinctively wrapped her arms around Lu Zhengchuan’s neck.

As she held on, a tremor went through her hand. She could feel the scorching heat of his skin beneath her palm. The warmth, the feel of skin on skin, made her instinctively drop her gaze, hiding her trembling eyelids.

"Lu Zhengchuan, what are you doing?" Su Wan found her voice and looked up to ask.

"I’m carrying you to the clinic." Lu Zhengchuan gestured for a nearby soldier to take the bicycle.

He carried Su Wan toward the clinic with an air of casual ease.

Su Wan swatted his shoulder a few times. "Are you really not going to put me down?"

Lu Zhengchuan looked down, met her beautiful eyes, and shook his head firmly. "No. I’m your man. If I can’t even do a small thing like this, what kind of man would I be?"

Su Wan was taken aback by his domineering words. Once she was sure he meant it, she decided it wasn’t worth the effort to struggle.

"Fine. Carry me then."

’Besides,’ she thought, ’for the baby’s sake, it’s only right that he carries me.’

With that thought, Su Wan accepted the situation.

And just like that, Lu Zhengchuan carried Su Wan all the way to the clinic.

Lu Zhengchuan had just carried Su Wan inside, looking for the doctor on duty to examine her, when a group of soldiers rushed in carrying a stretcher.

"Doctor Qi! Hurry, you need to bandage Lieutenant Liu!"

Lu Zhengchuan stopped short at the commotion, just barely avoiding a collision with the stretcher.

He instinctively tightened his hold, pulling her closer in a protective gesture.

His gaze also fell on the stretcher, and he immediately recognized the groaning man lying on it as Liu Lang.

"Liu Lang..." Lu Zhengchuan started, his brow furrowing as he took in the roughly bandaged wounds covering the man’s body.

The young soldier escorting Liu Lang looked up at his voice, and upon seeing him, quickly gave a military salute. "Battalion Commander Lu."

Lu Zhengchuan nodded in return. "What’s Lieutenant Liu’s condition?"

"Battalion Commander Lu, Lieutenant Liu was on a mission when he encountered a landmine. An explosion went off. He was wounded while protecting a new recruit. The medic on site gave him immediate first aid, but his leg wound is severe. Battalion Commander Zhao arranged for him to be sent back here for treatment."

"He developed a high fever on the way back, and since the clinic is closer than the military hospital, we brought him here first for emergency care."

The clinic’s trauma medics were excellent as well, so bringing him here was a smart move.

As soon as Dr. Qi saw Liu Lang, he immediately had the nurses wheel him into a private treatment room to begin working on him.

"Let’s wait here." Lu Zhengchuan found a stool and set it down for Su Wan.

Su Wan’s expression was grave. Even in that brief, rushed moment, she had seen how severe the burns and other wounds on Liu Lang’s body were.

"How did Liu Lang get hurt so badly? I’m sure I saw him just a few days ago." Su Wan was utterly shocked.

She couldn’t help but compare Liu Lang’s injuries to the vision of Lu Zhengchuan from her premonition.

’If Lu Zhengchuan were injured like that... it’s entirely possible he wouldn’t have been able to contact me.’

’In fact, in my dream, Lu Zhengchuan’s injuries might have been even worse... He might not have even survived.’

At this thought, she couldn’t help but lift her head and steal a few more glances at him. His handsome face was exceptionally striking, even in a place like the army, filled with disciplined, clean-cut men.

’The thought of him just disappearing from the world like that...’ She was surprised to find it made her incredibly sad.

"He must have been on a mission," Lu Zhengchuan explained matter-of-factly. "It’s one that many soldiers could have taken on, but it’s particularly dangerous."

Su Wan asked, "Nothing happened to you this time, right?"

"...No, everything went smoothly. After this one, I won’t be participating in this type of mission anymore." Lu Zhengchuan lowered his head to meet her gaze, taking the opportunity to tell her this.
