Chapter 126: Chapter 126: Broke the Promise

It was Mother Su who spoke. While pushing a cart, she looked around. The houses in the Capital were different from the ones back in the countryside—so neat and tidy.

But Mother Su wasn’t particularly impressed. Everything here was expensive, and so were medical fees. She was just an ordinary person and felt that life back home was perfectly fine, as long as her children were healthy.

Thinking of Su Wan’s condition, Mother Su couldn’t help but sigh inwardly.

"That smell... I think it’s coming from our place," Su Jue said, following the aroma and quickly pinpointing its source.

"What? Our place? Is Wanwan cooking? With her condition, she can still cook?" Mother Su’s brow furrowed instantly.

"Mom, it must be Aunt Zhao," Su Jue said quickly. "Her cooking is really good too."

’He wouldn’t dare let Wanwan overexert herself. What if it affected her health?’

"Aunt Zhao? The helper Zheng Chuan hired for Wanwan?" Mentioning Lu Zhengchuan’s name brought a look of relief to Mother Su’s face, and praise came easily to her lips. "That boy, Zheng Chuan, is a good kid. He really cares for Wanwan. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been so extravagant—renting a house and hiring someone to look after her."

Hearing this, Su Jue’s pedaling faltered for a moment. He opened his mouth, but in the end, said nothing to speak ill of Lu Zhengchuan.

He had to admit, when it came to money, Lu Zhengchuan had indeed done well.

But the emotional distress he had caused Wanwan was also undeniable.

"But now that I’m here, we won’t need to trouble that helper anymore, right?" Mother Su changed the subject, getting to the point.

Su Jue snorted softly. "Mom, don’t talk to me about this. Your son-in-law hired her. I heard she’s the mother of a fallen comrade—his only remaining family. Anyway, if you want to say something, you say it. I’m not getting on your son-in-law’s bad side."

"What’s with the passive-aggressive tone?" Mother Su shot him a glare. "You haven’t learned anything else since coming to the Capital, just how to be sarcastic, huh? Believe it or not, I’ll give you a smack."

Su Jue instantly straightened up. "Mom, I was wrong. Don’t be mad."

"Alright, I was just mentioning it to you. Of course I have to discuss it with my son-in-law."

"Your son-in-law is still on a mission. Who knows when he’ll be back," Su Jue retorted.

He earned a slap on the back from Mother Su. "What’s with all this ’my son-in-law,’ ’your son-in-law’? If you can’t talk properly, I’ll keep hitting you until you can."

Su Jue immediately made a zipping-the-lips gesture.

"Wanwan, we’re here!"

Mother Su called out happily as soon as she entered the courtyard.

Su Wan, with her large belly, immediately came out of the kitchen. Seeing her parents in their simple clothes, having traveled so tirelessly for her sake, made her nose tingle.

"Mom, Dad, you’ve worked so hard. You must be tired after such a long trip." Su Wan went forward and took Mother Su’s hand.

Mother Su grabbed her arm in return, her eyes filled with worry as she looked at her belly. "It’s getting quite big. It really is twins. You two better not give your mother a hard time. Grow up well, you hear?"

"Good girl. As long as you’re okay." Father Su couldn’t say much in the way of sentimental words. His face was just wreathed in smiles as he nodded repeatedly.

"Mom, Dad, you must be tired too. Go take a shower and change into some clean clothes first, then come eat. Lunch is ready. After you eat, you can get some rest," Su Wan quickly arranged for her parents.

Su Jue was moving the luggage. Mother Su gave Father Su a look, and he immediately sprang into action.

"I’ll get it, I’ll get it."

"Dad, Mom, you can stay in the room Third Brother was using. He’s moved into the school dorms now, so there’s enough space in the house."

Su Wan led the two of them into the house.

Mother Su looked around and nodded. "Not bad. This courtyard is so big, and there are plenty of rooms. This must have cost a lot, right? On that note, I collected a batch of duck eggs from the village. They were packed in a basket the whole way and didn’t get cracked. When we have time, we can take them to the market to sell."

"We also brought some cured meat. Wanwan, you’re pregnant, so you should eat less of it. Your father and I don’t have to watch what we eat, so we’ll have it. That way we won’t have to buy meat all the time."

Father Su added happily, "We brought a lot of dried vegetables, too. I hear you have to pay for any kind of vegetable here. Dried ones are good for stews, so your mother and I can save on our food expenses."

"Oh, and we bought some rice from the village. It’s not as white and clean as the rice in the Capital, but it tastes good."

Seeing her parents had brought a small mountain of luggage and had to squeeze onto a train, Su Wan’s eyes reddened, imagining the hardships they must have endured.

"What are you crying for? Mom and Dad are here now. Just focus on living peacefully from now on. If you’re not feeling well anywhere, you tell me." Mother Su reached out with her large hand and wiped away her tears.

Su Wan’s voice was thick with emotion. "I’m crying because you and Dad moved me so much."

"Save the tears. I’m going to take a shower."

Mother Su got to work efficiently, giving no one a chance to wallow in sentimentality.

Su Wan obediently began to explain things to the two of them.

Aunt Zhao also came out of the kitchen to talk. When the two women met, they both recognized that the other was a capable person. Before long, they were chatting and laughing, growing close.

After her parents had cleaned up, the five of them ate lunch together.

Su Jue went back to school after lunch. With his parents here, he no longer had to rush back all the time and could use his own time to earn some money on the side.

「That afternoon.」

Mother Su went with Su Wan to the hospital. After they returned that evening, she said to Su Wan, "Wanwan, don’t be afraid. The doctor said it hasn’t reached the worst-case scenario yet. I believe that as long as you stick with the treatment, you’ll be fine."

"It’s just a matter of money, right? Mom and Dad will go earn it!"

"I’ve learned how to make tea eggs, and soy milk too. I soaked the beans this afternoon. Tomorrow morning, your father and I will go borrow a stone mill and make some soy milk and tea eggs to sell."

Mother Su was a woman of action.

Early the next morning, with Aunt Zhao’s help, they left Su Wan’s breakfast warming in the pot. The three of them really did head out of the alley, found an intersection near a factory where they could do business, set up a stall, and actually started selling tea eggs.

「A month passed in the blink of an eye.」

Su Wan had to go to class at school tomorrow morning.

After a month of care, her belly had become more prominent, but thankfully, the hospital check-ups all came back relatively good. She hadn’t reached the worst-case scenario.

Although Su Wan still couldn’t sit for long periods, she could manage to get through a single class session.

"Wanwan, try on these clothes. You can’t fit into your school uniform anymore. Luckily, it’s October now and the temperature has dropped, so you can just wear the uniform jacket over them. It won’t be too conspicuous."

After Mother Su arrived, she would borrow a sewing machine from a neighbor. Because she and Aunt Zhao were good with people, their relationships with the neighbors were excellent.

So, they often borrowed things from each other and visited back and forth, fostering good relations.

And because Mother Su had earned several hundred yuan during this time by selling soy milk and tea eggs, the weight on her heart finally lifted, and she felt confident she could take good care of Su Wan.

Su Wan held the clothes her mother had prepared.

She glanced at the calendar on her desk. It showed that forty days had passed since Lu Zhengchuan left for his mission.

He had promised to be back in a month. He was now overdue.
