Chapter 116: Chapter 116: Don’t Like

Hearing this, Su Wan asked curiously, "Did Third Brother Su really say in person that he was going to pick you up, but then he didn’t show up?"

She felt that something wasn’t right about this, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on it.

"Yes, I heard him shout it from downstairs with my own ears while I was upstairs."

"Downstairs?" Su Wan’s eyes widened. ’When did Third Brother Su start doing things so flamboyantly? It doesn’t make sense. He’s supposed to be a very low-key person.’

"Um, Yanyan, don’t worry. When Third Brother Su gets back, I’ll ask him for a clear explanation. Then I’ll secretly tell you what he says," Su Wan said quickly.

Xu Yan was a bit shy. She smiled sweetly and shook her head. "No need, Wanwan. If you really go and ask Third Brother Su, it’ll make me seem petty. How could I face him then?"

Su Wan felt helpless. "Alright then, I won’t ask."

"But..." Su Wan saw that Aunt Zhao hadn’t come out yet and quickly lowered her voice to ask, "Yanyan, do you... like my third brother?"

Xu Yan’s cheeks instantly flushed crimson.

Her eyes darted around, not daring to meet Su Wan’s gaze.

Su Wan’s heart skipped a beat. Her suspicion was confirmed.

She bit her lip. For her friend’s own good, she spoke up. "Yanyan, to be honest, I don’t think you should like my third brother."

"Why?" Xu Yan sniffled, feeling wronged. "Wanwan, how come even you won’t support me?"

"Of course it’s because I consider you a good friend." Su Wan reached out and gently patted the back of her hand. Knowing it was better to rip the band-aid off, she gritted her teeth and said, "Yanyan, it’s because before I came to the Capital, you asked me to bring Third Brother Su a letter."

"Mhm." Xu Yan naturally remembered. She had been waiting for news at the Southwest Army base because of it.

But Su Jue never wrote back. When she learned there was an opportunity to perform in the Capital, she immediately applied for it with her director. Thankfully, her skills were up to par, and she got the chance.

"I know, Comrade Su Jue wrote back to me. It’s just a shame I haven’t seen it yet. Once I go back, I’ll be able to read it," Xu Yan said shyly.

Seeing her reaction, Su Wan’s heart sank.

She knew all too well what a girl looked like when she was caught in the web of love.

"But..." Su Wan felt like she was about to play the part of the Queen Mother, splitting up the star-crossed lovers. "Third Brother Su angrily scolded me and told me never to deliver letters for you again. And... he also said that he doesn’t like you."

After hearing the whole sentence, Xu Yan was completely stunned, her pretty face filled with disappointment.

Seeing her like this, Su Wan couldn’t help but sigh inwardly.

’Love is uncontrollable. Even for me, it was only because of the children that my relationship with Lu Zhengchuan stabilized. Without them, given our different personalities and the past misunderstandings, we would have definitely ended up divorced.’

"Am I not pretty? My family background is good, too. Why doesn’t Su Jue like me?" Xu Yan’s eyes turned red.

Su Wan patted her hand reassuringly. "Yanyan, you are very pretty, you have a good family background, and you’re beautiful inside and out. You’re a wonderful girl. There aren’t many men in this world who are worthy of you."

"It’s my third brother who isn’t good enough for you."

To be honest, Su Wan couldn’t figure out what Su Jue was thinking either. But since Third Brother Su had already rejected her, she couldn’t agree to anything on his behalf.

Especially not in matters of the heart. As an outsider, it was best for her not to meddle.

"He’s outstanding. I think he’s better than most men. As for other, more outstanding men, I’m just not interested in them." Xu Yan was a classic case of beauty being in the eye of the beholder.

Su Wan opened her mouth, but for a moment, she didn’t know what to say to convince her.

Xu Yan added, "He just doesn’t like me now because we haven’t seen each other enough. I’m the one pursuing him. He’ll definitely come to like me in the future."

Xu Yan clenched her fists.

"Alright, Wanwan, let’s not talk about this anymore. If word gets out, people will laugh at me."

"You should eat your breakfast first. We can talk while we eat."

"You can’t let my little nephew and niece go hungry."

Xu Yan gently stroked Su Wan’s belly as if it were a treasure.

Su Wan didn’t want her to remain stuck in her unhappiness either. Hearing this, she nodded, picked up the spoon Aunt Zhao had brought over, and started eating the red bean porridge.

Along with it were the steamed buns and fried dough sticks that Xu Yan had bought.

"Wanwan, I heard from Aunt Zhao that they suddenly discovered you’re having twins? Don’t worry. My mom knows Doctor Lin Qiaozhi, the ’Mother of Ten Thousand Babies.’ She’s currently working at Beida Hospital. Her work has drastically reduced the mortality rate for mothers and infants during childbirth."

"This Doctor Lin is usually very busy. She isn’t always at the hospital and often travels to the countryside. If there’s a dangerous delivery, she rushes over as soon as she finds out. So, I should have my mom ask Doctor Lin about her recent work schedule first."

Su Wan had also heard of this Doctor Lin. She was famous throughout the country, which was one of the reasons she was thinking of giving birth in the Capital.

She just hadn’t thought of seeking her out before, afraid of tying up medical resources. As long as it was a normal delivery, there was no need to trouble Doctor Lin.

"There’s no rush. Let’s wait for the ultrasound report from Capital Hospital first. If there’s a problem, then we can look for Doctor Lin."

"If it’s not a major issue that a regular doctor can handle, there’s no need to make such a big fuss."

Su Wan felt that she hadn’t really done anything to help Xu Yan. A friendship had to be a two-way street to last. She couldn’t bring herself to accept such a huge favor from Xu Yan.

"Wanwan, why are you just like Su Jue?" Xu Yan sighed helplessly. "Sigh, you two always refuse my good intentions and insist on paying me back."

"Yanyan, that’s because we truly see you as a friend and don’t want to hurt you." Su Wan’s eyes curved into smiling crescents. "If you always gave me very expensive gifts and I only ever treated you to a meal, over time, I would feel an imbalance, and you’d also feel bad because of my emotions."

"Think about it, don’t we only refuse trivial things from you? If it were truly a life-or-death situation, we would definitely ask for your help."

"And isn’t the fact that we’re not after your things one of the reasons you want to be friends with me?"

Xu Yan blushed under her smiling gaze and couldn’t resist reaching out to poke her cheek.

"Wanwan, stop talking, you’re going to charm me into a daze."

"Why aren’t you a boy? If you were a boy, I’d marry you," Xu Yan said, hugging her arm, her voice full of regret.

Su Wan almost said, ’If you can’t marry me, then marry my brother!’

But then the awkward image of Third Brother Su popped into her mind, and she sighed helplessly.

After breakfast, it was time for Xu Yan to return to her army unit. She left her contact information with Su Wan, saying she would come visit again when she was free.

Once Xu Yan left, Aunt Zhao and Su Wan sat in the courtyard, wrapping the roasted chestnuts in newspaper. They made packages of two jin for each household—not a lot, but it was the thought that counted. Wrapped up this way, they were suitable for giving away.

"Wanwan, you stay home and rest. I’ll go deliver the chestnuts."

"Okay."

Su Wan didn’t dare to sit and read for long periods anymore, but she could stand and read, moving around a little.
