Chapter 297: Chapter 158: This Is the Meat Found by the Mortal Realm, and Only the Mortal Realm Can Eat It
"..."
Chen Fan stood on the City Wall, his eyes narrowed as he gazed out beyond it.
He was waiting.
He was waiting to see if any Ghost Objects would attack. He wasn’t sure if Ghost Objects even existed on this continent after eternal night fell. But so far, not a single one had appeared, and he couldn’t even hear any sign of them in the darkness.
If there were Ghost Objects, he would upgrade the City Wall immediately.
The outer wall of New Continent Base One, this hastily built city, was a Level 3 City Wall. This was quite strong; even the walls of Mortal City were only at Level 1 right now.
Outside the rainy season, a Level 1 City Wall was more than enough.
In fact, most of the time outside the rainy season, a City Wall wasn’t even necessary, as Ghost Objects would never charge a Ghost Fire.
But this was the New Continent, after all—a brutally violent battlefield. He couldn’t say for sure what might happen here.
As it stood, though, it seemed this continent might truly be devoid of Ghost Objects.
A...
deserted continent, shrouded in silence.
「Inside the city.」
Hundreds of monkeys were quietly and quickly gathering the Ghost Stones and Ghost Bones within the city, stacking them neatly to one side. They were preparing to load the materials onto the High-speed Rail for transport back once the members of the Commerce Pavilion arrived.
The High-speed Rail in the Undersea Tunnel was a single-track line, with no passing Nodes set up.
Just then—
A faint buzzing sound suddenly echoed as a dust-covered High-speed Rail slowly pulled to a stop at the tunnel exit.
"Domain Lord!"
Wang Mazi, leading a group of Commerce Pavilion members and carrying a large amount of resources, jogged excitedly up onto the City Wall and stood before Chen Fan. "All seventy-six members of the Commerce Pavilion have arrived! We’ve already rested on the train and are ready to carry out our mission at any time!"
Chen Fan couldn’t help but smile as he looked at Wang Mazi beside him. It had been months, and Wang Mazi’s face was still as pockmarked as ever. Who would have thought that the guy who’d gotten off to female ghosts during the rainy season would one day become the capable Commerce Pavilion Master?
"You’re not a nobody anymore. You should think about getting rid of those pockmarks on your face."
"Heh heh."
Wang Mazi scratched the back of his head and grinned sheepishly. "If I get rid of the marks, would I still be Wang Mazi?"
Chen Fan didn’t say any more on the subject. He simply turned to gaze out at the dark night beyond the City Wall. After a long pause, he spoke in a soft, almost wistful voice.
"Wang Mazi."
"This is the New Continent. The one you discovered."
"For the past few months, Hey Hey and I have braved the elements to open this Undersea Tunnel. We’ve completed a monumental project, one that I believe no other power on the Eternal Night Continent could have accomplished."
"I did some preliminary scouting during the day."
"This continent was utterly destroyed by Ghost Objects. It’s littered with countless Ghost Stones and Ghost Bones. I’m not yet certain if any other Ghost Objects remain, but it’s highly unlikely."
"Those monkeys in the city are Exotic Beasts that the Mortal Realm subdued on Hope Island."
"They will be responsible for gathering the Ghost Stones and Ghost Bones on this continent."
"But—"
"The Ghost Stones and Ghost Bones aren’t scattered across the entire continent. The reason there are so many here is because this was a defensive line where an incredibly brutal war broke out. Your Commerce Pavilion’s mission is to explore this continent."
"To explore all the destroyed defensive lines on this continent."
"To explore the battlefields from the Ancient Era."
"And to mark their coordinates on the Ghost Map."
"This task is of the utmost importance to the Mortal Realm. I’ve even postponed the Mortal Realm Communication project for several months for this. That was a highly anticipated plan within the Mortal Realm, projected to earn tens of millions of Ghost Stones."
"The depths of the continent may hold many dangers, but you must rise to the challenge."
"If you can do this job well."
"I’ll credit you with another great merit."
"On the day the Jiangbei Defense Line is completed, you, Wang Mazi, will receive the highest honor."
"Rest tonight. You set out tomorrow morning."
"Yes, sir!"
Wang Mazi’s expression turned serious as he replied in a deep voice, "I will not fail to meet your expectations, Domain Lord."
"Alright."
Chen Fan suddenly laughed and patted Wang Mazi on the shoulder. "Truthfully, there probably won’t be too much danger. If you run into trouble, contact me immediately. I’ll come to your aid."
"You’ve done a great job."
...
The members of the Mortal Realm Commerce Pavilion had all gone to rest.
Only the monkeys were still bustling about, tireless.
In just over half a day, they had already excavated all the Ghost Bones and Ghost Stones from the surface within the city. They had even filled two High-speed Rail trains and sent them back to the Mortal Realm. New Continent Base One was no small city—it was a kilometer long and a kilometer wide, a massive area.
The work efficiency of these hundreds of monkeys was extremely high.
One could even say...
it was absurdly fast.
And yet—
"..."
As Chen Fan walked down from the City Wall, on his way to upgrade the Vehicle Workshop, he passed the group of monkeys and paused with a strange expression on his face. He waved over Lame Monkey, who was nearby.
"Lame Monkey, tell them something for me."
"They don’t need to work so hard."
"There’s still a lot of work to do. We need to haul all the Ghost Stones and Heavenly and Earthly Treasures on this continent back, not just this little bit. There are even more Ghost Stones and Ghost Bones to be gathered outside the city."
"If they burn themselves out working this hard from the start, they won’t have any energy later."
"This is a long-term project. They should rest when they need to."
Although this batch of monkeys worked with extreme efficiency, he didn’t want them to push themselves to the brink. It would be bad if they all collapsed from exhaustion later.
It was worth mentioning that.
Lame Monkey had told him that he could communicate simply with the other monkeys, instantly understanding each other’s body language and expressions. He wasn’t sure how it was possible—perhaps it was because the word for "monkey" was in both their names.
