Chapter 275: Chapter 154: The Mortal Realm’s Lone Watch in the Eternal Night

...and some Ghost Materials.

The Ghost Materials had all been placed in storage.

Aside from that, there was nothing. It was clear that when the Jiangbei Defense Line had fallen, this Immortal Celestial Master had truly been out of options and resources. He probably had no use for those Ghost Materials; otherwise, they wouldn’t have been left behind.

Although there was nothing of value inside the Storage Ring,

this Storage Ring was the greatest treasure in itself.

Its internal space was immense.

It was as large as the stone chamber of the Fate Hall he had established in the Mortal Realm camp. At over ten meters high, it could hold an incredible amount. It was now perfect for hauling away dirt.

...

Inside the straight, deep tunnel.

Thick earth packed the walls and ceiling. Every so often, pale white bones could be seen churning within it, reinforcing the tunnel’s structure.

They were now deep beneath the sea.

They had left the mainland some time ago.

If the tunnel were to collapse now, he wouldn’t survive, even with the protection of his Jade Staff. Under normal circumstances, he would never put himself in such a perilous situation, but the allure of the New Continent was too great. He was willing to take this risk.

There’s no such thing as a person who is always cautious.

Nor is there a woman who would never be unfaithful.

Everything is relative.

A matter of risk assessment.

The moment the reward outweighs the risk, the line gets crossed.

Within the narrow, cramped tunnel, it was almost completely silent.

The only sound was Hey Hey digging furiously. Hundreds of millions of tons of seawater pressed down from above. All he could do was trust the Mountain Remains Embryo—trust this... conceptual ability.

Soon, the Storage Ring was full.

He placed the Storage Ring onto a lone car that followed behind him. With a mere thought, the car instantly headed back. A short while later, it returned, the dirt that had filled the Storage Ring now completely gone.

The work continued.

It was a tedious and monotonous job.

But unlike laying the High-speed Rail tracks, Chen Fan didn’t feel tired this time. In fact, he felt invigorated. If he could successfully build this railway to the New Continent, it would mean they not only possessed a source of virtually infinite resources but also a place to retreat.

Of course, it would only be a temporary retreat.

After all, a continent that had once been wiped out by a Ghost Tide could hardly be called safe.

Relatively safe, perhaps.

Hiding there for a while wouldn’t be an issue.

Time slowly trickled by.

Hey Hey dug.

Chen Fan laid the Copper Pipe.

The man and the crocodile worked in perfect sync.

Night fell.

The Evernight had arrived.

It wasn’t that Chen Fan had a particularly good internal clock; rather, he saw the Copper Pipe behind him light up. The cold, white Ghost Fire flowing within the pipe would only emit a faint Yellow glow after the Evernight’s arrival.

He looked behind him.

The glow of the Ghost Fire from the Copper Pipe bathed the entire tunnel, stretching out into a long, almost illusory line.

After digging for a full day, he could no longer see the entrance to the tunnel.

The excavation speed under the sea wasn’t as fast as laying the High-speed Rail on land, but it wasn’t slow, either. Hey Hey was truly working its tail off, taking almost no breaks the entire time.

"..."

Chen Fan gazed at the surrounding earth, patiently sensing his surroundings, his eyes narrowed to slits.

’Normally, outside of the rainy season, Ghost Objects won’t attack the Ghost Fire. The area around the Copper Pipe should be a safe zone. But this is the deep sea, a region humanity has yet to explore. Who knows what could happen here.’

The thick earth and rock surrounding him were his only source of security.

’Ghost Objects are corporeal. This tunnel should make a good barrier. But if I feel any vibrations, or hear the sound of digging, I’ll retreat immediately.’

After a long moment, he detected no unusual movements.

Still, he looked over at Hey Hey and said softly, "Let’s call it a day. Time to go back and rest. We’ll get back to it tomorrow."

The next moment, the High-speed Rail car started up.

Chen Fan stood on the single Max Level Suspended Basket, which sped backward along the Yellow-glowing tunnel. Hey Hey, meanwhile, rested its front claws on the back of the basket, its heavy body practically flying through the air as it too made a swift return.

Hey Hey was tough-skinned and thick-hided; a few bumps wouldn’t bother it.

This made the return trip much faster.

If it had to run the whole way, it would have taken Hey Hey quite some time.

...

A night passed.

Daybreak arrived.

As Chen Fan was about to take Hey Hey and ride the High-speed Rail back to the Port, he suddenly saw someone enter the Mortal Realm Celestial Pit and walk up to him.

"You’re back?"

Chen Fan smiled at the person before him.

It was none other than Qi Yue.

Over a month ago, Qi Yue had bid him farewell, saying he was going to kill some people. Now, over a month later, he had returned.

"Domain Lord, I have returned."

Qi Yue seemed much more carefree than before, a smile playing on his lips with a hint of relief. "I have severed the first half of my life. From this day forward, I, Qi Yue, am reborn."

"You’ve completed the Severing?"

"I have."

"Who won?"

"I did, of course."

"Good."

Chen Fan nodded, then revoked all permissions on Qi Yue’s Identity Token. He looked to Wang Kui, who was standing nearby, and instructed, "This one’s completed the Severing. Don’t let him into the camp. Find out exactly who it was that won. I’ll deal with this tonight when I get back."

With that said, Chen Fan glanced at Qi Yue, offered a smiling nod, and then turned without a backward glance, leading Hey Hey away to continue digging the tunnel.

For the sake of this New Continent Tunnel, even his Mortal Realm Communication project had to be temporarily put on hold. The New Continent Tunnel was now the highest priority.

...

Inside the Mortal Realm camp,

a few people, led by Shao Qiu, stood outside the City Wall, grim-faced as they surrounded Qi Yue. The gun turrets mounted on the City Wall were all aimed squarely at him. Every eye was filled with suspicion and menace.
