I Begged His Brother to Get Me Pregnant
Chapter 85: A Clear Conscience
Chapter 85: Chapter 85: A Clear Conscience
The more Ryan Sterling said, the guiltier Evelyn Grant felt.
"I’ll finish up as quickly as possible this afternoon and call you."
"You don’t have to. If you don’t have time today, tomorrow is fine too."
"Alright."
After hanging up, Evelyn Grant let out a sigh of relief.
When it came to Ryan Sterling, she just couldn’t seem to adjust.
After all, in her memories of the past, he was always harsh with her, and there was little else to remember.
But now that he was back, everything was different!
He was not only gentle and considerate, but he also let her have her way with everything! Except for that first time at the Sterlings’, Ryan Sterling had been acting like a completely different person.
He felt like a stranger to Evelyn Grant.
And yet... he also seemed to be the same person he’d always been.
He always noticed her right away, always seemed to know when she was in trouble, and would always rush over just in time.
’He’d been like that in the past, too...’
Back in school, Ryan Sterling would bring her an umbrella on rainy days and show up with gauze and iodine when she fell. Then, after school, he would walk her home, a stern expression on his handsome face.
"Ms. Grant, it’s time to go!"
A colleague called out from outside.
Evelyn Grant’s thoughts were interrupted. She stood up and answered.
"Alright, I’m coming now."
...
At the barbecue restaurant, everyone was initially chatting about courthouse matters.
They were all lawyers, after all, so the conversation naturally revolved around their work.
That is, until Mr. Shaw took a call and stood up. "You all go on and eat. I have to meet a client."
"Alright, Mr. Shaw! See you this afternoon!"
Her colleagues all waved, and Evelyn Grant waved along with them.
The moment Mr. Shaw left the restaurant, a colleague immediately turned to Evelyn Grant. "Hey, Ms. Grant, is Mr. Shaw... interested in you?"
Evelyn Grant froze for a second, then immediately denied it.
"No, he’s not!"
"Are you sure?" The colleague leaned in, her voice full of teasing. "Then why is he always so attentive to you? I heard what he said to you earlier, you know!"
"What are you talking about? He just told me to focus on my work. We were only discussing firm business."
Evelyn Grant’s conscience was clear, of course.
She had absolutely no private relationship with Mr. Shaw whatsoever!
"Whoa, why such a strong reaction! We were just asking." Seeing her frown, the colleague quickly dropped the subject.
Evelyn Grant wanted to explain further, but she felt that bringing it up again would... only make it seem like she had something to hide.
After lunch, the other colleagues headed back to the firm in twos and threes, leaving Evelyn Grant to walk back by herself.
She called one of her clients on the way, so she was slightly delayed.
By the time she got back to the firm, she hadn’t even reached her office when she heard people in the breakroom apparently gossiping about her.
"Look at this photo—the way Mr. Shaw is looking at Ms. Grant! His eyes are practically sparkling!"
"I didn’t believe it at first, but now that I see the picture, it’s totally true!"
"Right? I heard Mr. Shaw being so attentive to her. He’s never been like that with us!"
"Well, Ms. Grant is gorgeous, so it’s not surprising she’d be liked. What man’s heart wouldn’t skip a beat for someone that beautiful?"
Hearing this, Evelyn Grant instinctively wanted to go over and explain.
But after a few steps, she stopped in her tracks.
’What good would it do to go in there?’
’Would they even believe me if I told them?’
’I already told them at the restaurant!’
