I Begged His Brother to Get Me Pregnant
Chapter 72: The Prenatal Check-up is Tomorrow
Chapter 72: Chapter 72: The Prenatal Check-up is Tomorrow
’And besides, all I did was favor Jane Jacobs a little over Evelyn Grant! What is Ryan Sterling doing? He’s trying to steal his own brother’s wife!’
"Only Ms. Shea is in the dark! Besides her, who doesn’t know you dragged Evelyn Grant to court and demanded the death penalty?"
"I was just trying to get to the truth!"
"You just didn’t trust Evelyn Grant."
"..."
Ryan Sterling knew his older brother was the type who cared about his pride above all else. Since this whole affair had gotten out of hand, he had to find an excuse—one that could even fool himself, that would cover up all his mistakes or shift the blame onto someone else.
’In any case, it could never be his fault.’
"If Jane Jacobs were still alive, would you still want to get back together with Evelyn Grant?"
Julian Sterling’s expression darkened. "I want to get back together with her because I don’t want to make Mom and Dad worry! They’re getting old, and they shouldn’t have to stress over my problems."
"Is that the only reason?"
"Of course!"
"Well, if Evelyn Grant is so disposable to you, then you don’t need to go to all this trouble and cause a scene here at Ms. Shea’s. I can help you calm Mom and Dad down and get them to peacefully accept your divorce."
Ryan Sterling looked his brother straight in the eye, watching for any reaction.
It was obvious.
He wasn’t going to agree.
Everything he’d just said was nothing but an excuse.
"And then what? You bring Evelyn Grant to Mom and Dad and tell them you want to marry her and be with her?" Julian glared. "Ryan, you spend all year abroad, so it’s one thing that you’re not a dutiful son, but do you really want to kill them with anger?"
"Mom accepted your divorce, helped you scheme to put Evelyn Grant in prison, and even plotted with you to trick Evelyn into drinking that drug. What else is there that she *can’t* accept?"
’Because of Jane Jacobs, Julian had shattered his own perfectly good family, and in the end, the Sterling Family still had to clean up his mess, didn’t they? They were even willing to deceive Evelyn Grant! On the surface, it was all about preserving the family and not letting the couple separate. But in reality, they couldn’t have cared less what Evelyn Grant wanted. They just didn’t want their son to lose such a good wife!’
Ryan Sterling saw it all clearly, which was why he had to remain on guard.
Just as Julian was about to say more, the sound of approaching footsteps interrupted him.
The brothers looked over at the same time.
Evelyn Grant walked toward them, her lips pressed into a thin line. She glanced at them before stopping about ten feet away, not coming any closer.
She hesitated for a moment before speaking.
"You both know about my mother’s health. No matter what happens today, you cannot let her find out about anything that’s happened recently. That includes... my time in prison. Not a single word. As for everything else, once we leave my mom’s, you can say whatever you want."
All things considered,
this was the first time the three of them had stood together since everything had happened.
But the timing couldn’t be worse.
There was nothing to say.
Julian was the first to react, nodding immediately in agreement. "Don’t worry, I know about your mom’s condition. I was serious when I said I wanted to take her to a doctor. I won’t say anything I shouldn’t."
That last sentence was obviously meant for a certain someone.
’Things I shouldn’t say...’
Ryan’s dark eyes swept over him, his lips twisting into a disdainful smirk.
He then walked over to Evelyn Grant’s side and said in a low voice, "Your prenatal checkup is tomorrow. Don’t forget."
