Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Let’s Have Another Good Talk as a Couple
After breakfast, Ryan Sterling drove her to the law firm. Evelyn Grant could finally escape his sight and heaved a huge sigh of relief!
Sean Shaw had actually thrown a small welcome-back party for her, complete with flowers and a gift. Not a single colleague from the law firm was absent—everyone came to celebrate.
How could Evelyn Grant not be moved?
"Mr. Shaw, you really shouldn’t have! I’ve caused the firm so much trouble, and yet you still did all this for me..."
Sean Shaw waved a hand, cutting her off. "Not at all, not at all! I was just following orders."
Evelyn froze. "Following orders?"
"Ah..." A guilty look flashed across his face, and he quickly corrected himself. "I misspoke. I meant I was following my... heart! You’ve been with our firm for three years, you’re a veteran employee. Now that you’ve been cleared of suspicion after that whole ordeal, I had to do something to mark the occasion!"
"Well, I still have to thank you for being so understanding, Mr. Shaw!"
’It’s so rare to find such an enlightened boss these days.’
Sean Shaw patted her shoulder encouragingly. "Don’t mention it. Just focus on your work. Come find me if you need anything!"
Evelyn smiled and nodded. "Mm."
She returned to her office, which she hadn’t been to in a long time. The moment she pushed open the door, her nose began to sting, and she fought back tears.
’It’s just as I left it.’
Evelyn remembered it clearly. It had been near the end of the day. After discussing the details of an upcoming hearing with a client, she had suddenly remembered she was supposed to go with Julian Sterling to the registry office the next morning to finalize their divorce.
So she had turned around, come back, and taken her the documents she’d need for the divorce from the drawer.
She had been in such a hurry that she’d left the bottom drawer of her desk unlocked.
Back then, Evelyn Grant could never have imagined that the very next day, the man she loved most would personally drag her to court and, with his own words, demand she be sentenced to death!
Taking a deep breath, she walked over slowly and pulled a black notebook from the drawer.
She opened it.
The pages were crammed with healing recipes that Evelyn Grant had meticulously collected from all over.
After reading just two pages, she stood, walked over to the paper shredder, and expressionlessly tore the pages from the notebook, shredding them to pieces.
"I’ll never do something so stupid again."
’Never again. I don’t want to see or hear anything related to Julian Sterling ever again!’
But it was as if fate insisted on messing with her.
That evening, she had just finished organizing her files, ready to head home, when her phone rang.
She glanced at the screen...
A name that hadn’t appeared on her screen in ages now stared back at her.
Julian Sterling.
’What could he possibly want now?’
Evelyn didn’t answer. She hung up.
Julian Sterling immediately called back.
After this repeated several times, his number disappeared, only to be replaced by Florence Morgan’s!
Since it was an elder, Evelyn felt she couldn’t keep rejecting the calls. She had no choice but to press the answer button. "Hello...?"
"Eve, it’s me."
Julian Sterling’s voice sounded faint, as if he were trying to suppress some pain.
Back when they lived together in the military family housing, he had often called her "Eve" just like that—warmly and gently.
But after Julian Sterling went to another city for his doctorate and met Jane Jacobs, he’d returned and started calling her formally by her full name.
Now, hearing his voice call her "Eve" again, Evelyn Grant found it utterly ironic.
"What else do you want? Have you found new evidence for Jane Jacobs?"
"..." Julian Sterling didn’t get angry. His voice still trembled slightly. "I drank something cold last night, and my stomach problems flared up today. I went to the hospital alone, and the doctor asked what medications I’ve taken in the past."
He genuinely had no idea.
Because Evelyn had always taken care of all of it.
"Eve, I’m right outside your law firm. Come out. Can we have a proper talk again? Just the two of us. Okay?"
