I Begged His Brother to Get Me Pregnant
Chapter 123: Evelyn Grant Doesn’t Want to Breach the Contract
Chapter 123: Chapter 123: Evelyn Grant Doesn’t Want to Breach the Contract
"Can’t you just do it as a favor for me? With our relationship, do we still need the firm’s permission?"
"The contract I signed stipulates that I can’t take cases on the side. If I do, I’ll have to pay a penalty."
Suing her own law firm was obviously not a good option.
Evelyn Grant didn’t want to leave the firm, nor did she want to ruin her relationship with Mr. Shaw.
"If it’s the penalty you’re worried about, that’s easy! Whatever the cost, I’ll cover it for you! We don’t need to be afraid of that!"
"Florence, it’s not just about the penalty. If I breach my contract, everyone in the industry will find out. How could I possibly continue to practice law then? Besides, the firm hasn’t done anything unreasonable. I signed that contract of my own free will. If I just tear it up now, the consequences will be severe."
But most importantly, Evelyn Grant didn’t want to breach the contract.
She didn’t want to take Florence Morgan’s "case," and she didn’t want to get entangled with Julian Sterling again.
She wasn’t a fool.
Evelyn Grant knew that Florence Morgan showing up out of the blue and insisting that she handle some case for her couldn’t possibly be the real goal.
’Trying to get me and Julian Sterling to remarry... that’s her real goal.’
"Eve, look at me. In all these years, this is the only thing I’ve ever asked of you. Do you have the heart to say no?"
"Okay, I’ll talk to the firm about it. If they agree, then there’s no issue."
Seeing how insistent she was, Florence Morgan didn’t press the issue and could only nod.
"Fine. You talk to your firm, and I’ll wait to hear from you! But I’m insisting on you as my lawyer. I won’t have anyone else! You’re the only one I trust."
"Mm."
After seeing Florence Morgan out, Evelyn Grant handled a few of her own tasks before going upstairs to knock on Mr. Shaw’s office door.
"Come in."
She heard him say a few more things from inside.
Then, Evelyn Grant pushed the door open.
When he saw it was her, Mr. Shaw immediately stood up. The frown he’d been wearing over a case moments before quickly vanished, replaced by a beaming smile as he asked, "What can I do for you, Ms. Grant?"
"It’s nothing, really. It’s just... I have a potential client who wants me to help with a case, and I was wondering if the firm would be willing to take it on?"
Mr. Shaw raised an eyebrow, his guard immediately going up.
"Of course! Our firm is always open to new cases. However, you don’t have the time to take anything on right now. I have other matters to assign to you."
"...But this client specifically wants me to handle the case."
"Then that’s out of the question. Nothing we can do."
Mr. Shaw refused flatly.
There was no room for negotiation.
As for Evelyn Grant, she hadn’t wanted to take the case in the first place. She only asked out of obligation to Florence Morgan.
"Alright, I understand."
"Ms. Grant, don’t read too much into this. It’s not that I’m stopping you from taking cases. It’s just... the firm has some miscellaneous matters to attend to, and frankly, I don’t trust anyone else to handle them. I think you’re the best person for the job! Once you’re done, I promise I’ll assign you plenty of good cases!"
Evelyn Grant smiled. "There’s no need for that. I work for the firm, so naturally, I’ll follow its arrangements. I’ll do as you say."
"You’re really not upset?"
"Really."
Mr. Shaw breathed a sigh of relief. "That’s good! That puts my mind at ease."
After finishing what she had to say, Evelyn Grant turned to leave. She was already at the door when she suddenly stopped, glanced back, and asked, "By the way, Mr. Shaw, your refusal to let me take on cases... is it because someone has been... saying things about me behind my back?"
"Huh?" Mr. Shaw’s eyes widened. "No, of course not!"
