I Became the Eye Candy: Four Bigshots Claimed to be My Dad?
Chapter 703: If You Don’t Understand, Then Just Wait to Die
At her words, the boy placed his filthy hand on the baby’s forehead. His expression changed instantly.
The baby was a sobbing mess, its face an unnatural shade of red.
"Those guards seem reliable. If you keep pushing everyone away, he will die." Ye Qianning pointed at the baby, then gestured to another child. "He will die too."
The boy didn’t look up. ’Trust?’
’He couldn’t trust anyone!’
"As the saying goes, revenge can wait ten years. You should focus on staying alive first," Ye Qianning said softly.
KNOCK KNOCK.
A knock sounded at the door.
The boy immediately covered the baby, growing tense and alert.
"Come in."
Luo Feng, the lead guard from before, pushed the door open and entered. A middle-aged man carrying a box on his back followed him.
"The child in his arms seems to have a weak pulse. Doctor, please take a look," the guard said, stepping aside.
The doctor walked over.
The boy clutched the swaddled baby and backed away repeatedly. His eyes were vicious, and he snarled the moment the doctor approached.
The doctor was startled by the boy’s sudden aggression and quickly backed away. "Guard... Guard Luo, this child... How about you bring the baby to me? I can examine it then."
Luo Feng started to step forward but stopped when he saw the boy preparing to attack again. He turned to Ye Qianning, looking troubled. "Miss, he seems to trust you more than us. Could you...?"
"If he won’t allow it, then forget it. It’s not like it’s our relative who’s dying. Let’s go." Ye Qianning had no patience for coddling children and started walking toward the door.
"Miss..."
"My kindness has been mistaken for malice. There’s nothing more to say." With that, Ye Qianning walked out.
Luo Feng hadn’t expected Ye Qianning to actually leave. The boy’s fierce gaze was now fixed on the doorway, filled with disbelief.
The doctor was bewildered. He glanced around before finally looking at Luo Feng. "Guard Luo, are we doing this examination or not?"
Luo Feng’s gaze returned to the boy. He had been observing the child for the past few days and knew how stubborn he was. He wouldn’t let anyone near him. If they tried to use force, he’d fight as if his life depended on it, biting down and refusing to let go.
Just like what happened with Qi Mazi earlier today—the boy wouldn’t have let go until he’d torn off a chunk of flesh. That’s why they had no choice but to leave food for him each day.
"If you want the baby to live, let the doctor examine him. If you refuse, then there’s nothing more we can do." Luo Feng had said all he could.
The boy looked away from the door and back at them, still on high alert.
When the boy remained silent, Luo Feng looked at the doctor. "Let’s go."
’Whether the baby lived or died was his choice. They had no right to interfere, even if a life was on the line.’
’In this day and age, death was common. So was child trafficking. They wanted to help, but they didn’t have time to painstakingly reason with every person like this boy.’
’This was an age where the strong devoured the weak. Death was just a part of life.’
Luo Feng and the doctor started toward the door.
"Wait... wait..." the boy finally said.
Luo Feng turned his head.
"Ex... examine him..."
The doctor looked at Luo Feng.
Luo Feng nodded.
The doctor finally walked over and reached out to lift the swaddling cloth. "Oh my, look at these cheeks! He’s so feverish his face is completely flushed. Why is he wrapped so tightly? Quick, undo it."
After a moment’s hesitation, the boy handed the swaddled baby to the doctor.
The doctor took the baby and walked toward the large bed.
The boy followed close behind, his expression still tense. His eyes were locked on the doctor, ready to pounce at the slightest sign of a threat.
The doctor placed the baby on the bed and unwrapped the cloth. His eyes widened in shock. One of the baby’s arms was covered in burns. The blisters had burst, and the wounds were inflamed and festering.
