Chapter 1128: Chapter 1127: A Sensible Child Is Endearing

Seeing this slip of paper, Beisitian and Wei Zhongxun exchanged a glance and both caught the shock in the other’s eyes. This note must have been left by one of the people who were just here, and as for who left it, there was no need to think too hard—if it wasn’t Luo Xudong, then it was Bei Jiale!

This showed that one of those two had hidden themselves among the Modern Families. As for which one... they thought back to who had been standing around this table just now, and realized almost everyone could have done it.

But to, in front of so many people, slip the note under the cup without anyone noticing and without seeming out of place—that did feel a bit like Luo Xudong’s style. Still, it wasn’t something Bei Jiale couldn’t pull off.

There were no cameras or similar devices in the room, so there was no way to replay and check. Thinking back on the people who had come in just now, there had been six in total; three or four of them were about the same height, but their builds were completely different.

Height might be hard to tamper with, but there were still ways to work with someone’s build.

Guessing who it was wasn’t actually that important; what mattered was knowing that one of their own was in the mix. The content of the note, though, was very important.

There was already a mole. Judging by this, someone from the Modern Families had already defected.

Beisitian thought of the scene of Wen Xin and Chu Fenglei together. The Wen Family very clearly had that intention, and among the people who had come looking for her, there had been no one from the Wen Family.

But the Wen Family’s stance was far too obvious. If it were them, there might not even be any need for a reminder. Judging from this, the one who gave the warning might not be from the Wen Family at all.

Now there was a family secretly defecting, yet still mixing among the Modern Families. What exactly was their purpose?

Beisitian’s expression tightened; she couldn’t shake the feeling that things were getting more and more complicated.

Right now, she felt the Wen Family and the Zhou Family were the least suspicious.

"I thought you would suspect the Zhou Family," Wei Zhongxun said.

Beisitian smiled slightly. "If it were the Zhou Family, they wouldn’t be stupid enough to throw themselves out of this circle over some immediate gain. If they did that, how would they get the information they want?"

If they did, there wouldn’t be much point in staying hidden.

The people of the Ancient Families were holding their own banquet in the courtyard, while the people of the Modern Families were working hard to calm their emotions.

A little after eight in the evening, the pitch-black night outside suddenly lit up with dots of light. Those dots glowed softly, swaying as they drifted up into the sky.

"Mom, what’s that?" Luo Yirui stood by the window, watching as one light after another bloomed.

Beisitian said, "Those are Kongming Lanterns."

"What’s a Kongming Lantern?" Luo Yirui tilted his head and asked.

"Kongming Lanterns were a kind of communication tool in ancient times, used for military purposes. But now, people pin their wishes on them, let them soar into the distant night sky, carrying thoughts of those far away and prayers for good fortune."

Luo Yirui’s small hands clutched the windowsill, his eyes unblinking as he stared outside, his head tilting back with each little point of light.

"Little Rui, do you want to go see the Kongming Lanterns?" Beisitian asked.

Luo Yirui turned to look at his mother, then turned back to gaze outside. "Let’s wait until we go home to release Kongming Lanterns. Little Rui knows things are very troublesome right now."

It’s the sensible children who tug at the heart the most. When Luo Yirui said those two sentences, Beisitian’s heart trembled slightly. Making a child this young shoulder what he shouldn’t have to—the tangled, aching feeling in her chest was something only a parent could truly understand.

"Come on, let’s go down and see who’s releasing these Kongming Lanterns." Beisitian gently took Luo Yirui’s small hand.

Luo Yirui’s eyes lit up, and he answered crisply, "Okay!"
