I Became a FortuneTeller in a Versatile World and Attracted Every Race
Chapter 30: Jailbreak
While Asher was being led through torch-lit corridors toward whatever "proper room" and public display Conrad had planned, the air in the lower cells remained cold and wet.
Adrian Thorne sat with his back against the stone wall, chains still binding his wrists to heavy iron rings set into the floor. The worst of the claw wounds across his torso had closed to angry red lines. The deeper tears were knitting faster than they had any right to. Asher’s blood still moved through him like liquid fire, richer, denser, and far more potent than anything he had tasted in decades. It had dragged him back from the edge of death and left something restless and sharp-edged in its wake.
He flexed his hands experimentally. The metal cuffs creaked.
Good.
Adrian closed his eyes and reached for the residual strength still flooding his limbs. Animal blood had left him permanently underfed; human blood would have restored him more reliably, but Asher’s blood had done something else entirely. It had not merely filled the deficit, it had overfilled it, leaving his senses scraped raw and his temper closer to the surface than he preferred.
He tested the chains again, harder this time. The iron ring on the left side of the floor shifted in the stone with a low grind.
Adrian smiled without humor.
He braced both feet against the wall, wrapped the chains around his fists, and pulled with everything the stolen blood would give him. Metal screamed, stone cracked, and the left ring tore free in a shower of dust and broken masonry. The right followed a moment later with a final, violent wrench.
Adrian rose slowly, rolling his shoulders as the last of the chains fell away. His body still ached in places, but the pain was distant, secondary to the cold clarity settling over him. He crossed to the cell door, examined the lock for half a second, then simply drove his shoulder into the wood and iron until both gave way.
The corridor outside was empty.
Guards had grown complacent after the initial capture, assuming a half-dead Vampire Lord on animal blood would stay down. They had not accounted for Asher’s blood.
Adrian moved through the lower levels like a shadow given purpose. He avoided the main thoroughfares, following the scent of woodsmoke, polished leather, and the distinctive musk of an Alpha who had never learned subtlety. The higher he climbed, the more finished the stonework became. Torches gave way to better lighting, and the air lost some of its dampness.
He stopped in front of a heavy wooden door near the end of a quieter corridor. Conrad’s scent was strongest here, along with the faint sounds of movement and fabric on the other side.
Adrian did not knock. He pushed the door open and stepped inside.
Conrad stood before a tall mirror, fastening the last buttons of a dark, formal coat suitable for a victory gathering. He did not look particularly surprised to see the Vampire Lord standing in his private chambers. If anything, a slow, almost nostalgic smile pulled at the scarred side of his mouth.
"This brings back memories, doesn’t it?" Conrad said.
Adrian ignored the comment completely. His red-tinged eyes swept the room once, then locked onto the Alpha.
"Where is the human?"
Conrad finished with his cuffs and turned fully, leaning a hip against the dressing table as if they were two old acquaintances catching up rather than enemies who had left blood on the road between them.
"Five decades," Conrad said mildly, "and you still haven’t forgiven a little mistake? Don’t you miss me even a little, Adrian?"
Adrian’s expression remained flat and cold.
"Don’t flatter yourself. You’ve lost whatever exuberance you once had. And cheating on me with my uncle is not a ’little mistake.’" He took one step further into the room. "But I’ve grown past that. I want the human boy. Where is he?"
Conrad’s smile faded into something more serious. He pushed away from the table and faced Adrian fully.
"You can’t have him. I need the boy for important reasons, and I will not let you take him away."
The temperature in the room dropped. Adrian’s voice, when it came, was soft and lethal.
"You do not want to know what Marcel will do if he learns you harmed that boy. And you do not want to know what the vampire council will do when word spreads that you attacked and abducted a Vampire Lord on the open road."
Conrad did not flinch. If anything, his golden eyes hardened with the same ruthless calculation that had once let him kill his own brothers for the title of Alpha.
"I’ve spent decades building resources," he said. "The wolf faction is the strongest it has been in living memory. I have the numbers, the alliances, and the territory to face any enemy that comes looking. Including your brother. Including the council. I would not advise starting a war you cannot finish."
Adrian knew, with cold clarity, that Conrad was not entirely wrong. The balance of power between the races had shifted over the decades. An open conflict between vampires and a united wolf faction would be bloody, prolonged, and politically catastrophic. Marcel would still wage it if Asher were harmed — of that Adrian had no doubt — but the cost would be immense.
That knowledge did not change Adrian’s determination.
He stood in the center of Conrad’s private chambers, freshly healed on the blood of the human currently being prepared for display at a victory party, and met the Alpha’s stare without blinking.
"One way or another," Adrian said quietly, "I am taking the boy out of here. And myself with him. You can decide how much of your pack survives the process."
Conrad held his gaze for a long moment. Then the scarred smile returned, thinner and sharper than before.
"We’ll see," the Alpha said. "Enjoy the hospitality while it lasts, Adrian. The night is still young."
Adrian did not answer. He simply turned and walked back out of the room. He didn’t know exactly where he was headed to, but it felt nice to walk out on Conrad. Now he needed to find Asher, and once they were together, he’d find a way to get them out of here.
