Chapter 386: Old Patterns

A man in a high seat of white stone listened.

The chamber kept the silence it needed to maintain. Clean walls. Clean law. No loose traffic. No wasteful light. He filled the chamber without effort. At rest he suggested someone used to finding the room obeying him.

A trusted servant stood three steps below the seat with a slate pressed flat.

’ Report.’

The servant nodded once. ’ Tohu has altered his pattern. For several intervals he has been withdrawing agents from active disputes and redirecting them to residual tracking. He opened a direct channel to Sera, then abandoned his range and crossed the outer markers of her territory in person.’

The man in white stone tapped a single finger against the armrest. ’ Sera.’

’ Yes. She held nine survivors from a concluded lower design. It was an early joint assignment. Your structure work. Tohu’s variable work. External judgment ended it. Sera extracted nine before erasure and kept them under private coverage.’

’ And Tohu cares now.’

’ He is concerned with one residual mark within the group. It corresponds to his early creative authority. Sera refused to accept the transfer. The nine dissolved her continuous claim and escaped. Both Sera and Tohu are pursuing them.’

The man leaned back. The white stone did not shift beneath him.

’ Names.’

The servant read them clearly. "Zeus. Poseidon. Hades. Athena. Hermes. Odin. Loki. Sun Wukong. Kratos."

The man repeated the first name once, testing the sound. ’So this Zeus carries the mark.’

’ The current assessment. Tohu’s probe confirmed it before the break. Sera has ordered recovery with Zeus as priority. Tohu is pursuing a parallel line. Secondary scavenger interests have mobilized as the claim is open.’

’ Of course they have.’ The man’s voice did not change. ’ Broken ownership always attracts hands.’

The servant remained as the man ran his fingers through the names again in unhurried silence. Outside the chamber Continuum traffic traveled beneath carefully managed lanes. Inside the chamber nothing moved save when he allowed it.

’ This Zeus,’ the man said at last. ’ What else is known about him?’

’ Lower origin. Strong residual structure. He drove the seam in Sera’s coverage personally. The others follow his lead. Tohu wants him intact. Sera wants all nine returned, with him first.’

’ And the others?’

’ Poseidon and Hades were major powers in the same design. Athena and Hermes worked the same sky. Odin and Loki were a parallel branch of that world. Sun Wukong and Kratos were late variables with independent force. All nine survived full external judgment with coherence intact. This makes them irregular.’

The man stood from the seat and moved toward a sealed map wall of old assignments. Most of the designs were closed cleanly years in the past. Some had simply run down when more pressing matters arose. He paused before one faded identifier and examined it without fully opening the record.

’This was the joint project,’ the man said. ’ I provided the spine. Tohu worked the unstable elements. Review passed. We moved on. I have not followed that design again until now.’

’ Yes.’

He turned back, and for the first time the servant used the name the chamber already acknowledged.

’ Jehovah, do you want interception?’

Jehovah regarded him for a long moment. The name shaped itself to the chamber as easily as any law.

’ Not yet.’ Jehovah said at last. ’ If I act now I turn a two-party dispute into a bloodline matter. Sera will escalate. Tohu will fortify. Scavengers will increase. I want clearer information before I expend open authority.’

The servant lowered the slate. ’ What order then?’

’ Keep quiet eyes on Tohu. See if he is simply recovering a mark or using this to expand a contest with Sera. Track the residual trail of these nine. Do not interfere with them. Should a third House move to seize this Zeus before either hunter arrives, inform me at once.’

’ And Sera?’

’ Sera accumulates leverage. She always has. She will not halt because Tohu is nettled. She will halt when the cost outweighs the value. Ensure I am aware when that equation changes.’

Jehovah turned back to the white seat and rested his hands on the arms. He did not send the servant away at once.

’There is one other matter. The extraction itself. Sera did not remove nine coherent survivors from a full external judgment by mistake. Someone allowed her sufficient latitude to accomplish it, or she has improved on her last evaluation. Determine which is the case.’

’ Yes.’

’ Also determine whether any residual structure from my contribution to that assignment remains active within the group. Tohu’s mark is confirmed. I want to know if anything of the spine is still available.’

’ Understood.’

’ Go.’

The servant departed through a side channel. The seal closed without sound.

Jehovah sat in silence and opened the old assignment record. Structure lattice. Variable overlay. Review endorsement. Release. No further supervision. An accomplished task by prior standards. He scanned the listing of residual survivors and paused at the first name.

’ Zeus,’ he said quietly to the empty chamber.

He closed the record and sat in silence for an extended period. Tohu was taking personal interest. Sera had suffered an inventory loss and was choosing recovery over noninterference. Nine remnants of a discarded lower design were loose within Continuum traffic, and one of them still retained sufficient trace of Tohu’s early authority to concern both hunters. None of this should have been of consequence at this level.

It was of consequence because Tohu chose to make it so.

Jehovah turned his gaze toward the sealed map wall for the first time since the assignment had been concluded.

He would not pursue. He would not declare interest. He would observe the pattern until the pattern demanded his response.

Outside his personal range Tohu continued the pursuit. Sera constricted her net. The nine moved within lanes that were not their own.

And for the first time since that old assignment had been abandoned, Jehovah was watching the leftovers with attention.
