I am the Only Son of Nyx
Chapter 270: Fate in Another’s Palm
Being healed by a healer rather than relying on a healing cream felt incredible.
Indira surrounded her mana around his body like a blanket—her gentle hands moved with a practiced precision. And then, she placed a cup that she brought on the hardwood table and began to concoct something.
A solution that was even more potent than a healing vial.
Based on her aura and the density of her mana, she was most likely an Aspirant Supernal.
Naturally, with such strength, healing Kai’s bruised and battered body was easy.
Kai drank the solution and immediately felt the healing property within it spread across his entire body, and the mist of green that was enveloping him like a blanket hummed, increasing the potency of the solution.
He was near death before the healing process began.
In no longer than twenty minutes, the bleeding cuts and lacerations were closed shut.
And though the process went smoothly in Indira’s eyes, it wasn’t really the case for Kai.
Don’t do it. No... Don’t you dare do it.
Kai was doing his absolute hardest to make sure that his Primordial Locks were behaving, as they were inclined to devour anything that got within their reach. It was like having a naughty, untrained dog.
He needed to constantly warn it to make sure that it behaved.
In the end, the healing process was completed without a hitch.
"Don’t move yet," Indira warned, placing her hand against Kai’s chest—to prevent him from getting up. "Although your superficial and deep open wounds are entirely healed, the solution still needs time to heal your internal wounds."
"I feel fine, though..." Kai lifted his arm and clenched his hand into a fist a couple of times.
He was quite sure that he was already properly healed.
"You may feel fine, but that doesn’t mean your body is fine. Stay for ten more minutes."
"Alright. It’s not like I’m in a hurry."
"But you are in a hurry."
"Hm? A hurry for what?"
"You still have to attend the investiture for the bestowal of the Red Prince title, and I was also told that the Chancellor wanted to meet you before it. So, you are in a hurry."
Kai gulped harshly when he heard what she said.
Moments later.
Kai now stood inside a familiar office, one that had left a trauma in him—the thick air inside this icy room pressed in from every side and suffocated him. His senses were on high alert, every nerve coiled.
His body hadn’t forgotten—the devastation of being denied his increase in class and becoming a proper Angel.
Now, he was worried that it would happen again.
That he would be denied the chance to become the Red Prince.
Regardless of what happened in the tournament, the Chancellor has the final say.
And Kai’s life was literally in the palm of his hand.
Across from him—the Chancellor was sitting behind his desk, reclined in his pompous chair with his hands clasped on his stomach. Nobody was inside other than the two of them. Ragnar wasn’t present to be a third presence to ease the tension.
Neither spoke in this tense moment.
Only the clock ticking played in the background, saving the room from total silence.
Eventually, the Chancellor broke the silence.
"You’ve been a real thorn in my side, Lesser Angel." He said in a baritone voice. His voice was so heavy that it sent tremors into Kai’s heart. "The last time we talked—I said you should forget about your ambition. It’s not good and would only lead to an early death. But you still clung to it."
"When my sister died, a part of her soul seemed to merge with mine, Sir," Kai replied, but his gaze stayed fixed on the painting behind the Chancellor—a Supernal holding the Thunderbolt above the clouds, facing a multi-headed dragon. "Unfortunately, that part of her soul carried her stubbornness."
"Is that right?" the Chancellor subtly nodded.
He had already learned that Kai was stubborn ever since the Ambrosia Pact was created.
Silence enveloped the room again.
And though Kai tried to look and sound calm, his heart was pounding inside.
More importantly, it seemed the Chancellor could hear his heart pounding.
But right now, Kai was at his mercy, so he wasn’t worried about this.
"What do you think I should do? Should I allow you to become the Red Prince?"
"To answer that, may I ask why you denied my rise to become an Angel?"
"Hm..." the Chancellor shifted in his seat, and then leaned forward. He placed both elbows on his desk—and intertwined his hands, thinking. "Do you know the story of the God of Harvest and Time?"
"No," Kai shook his head. "I don’t know about it."
"Not many knew about this story, so it’s fine. Titan Cronus is the God of Harvest and Time."
"A Titan...?"
Kai, of course, knew about the Titans.
All of them are wicked beings who sought nothing but chaos and destruction. The public only has minimal information about them, but the stories that do circulate are horrendous. Most of mankind referred to what they did as outlandishly sadistic.
By now, everyone hated the Titans for what they did to the Gods.
Only Titan Thebe was considered the outlier.
She was the only good Titan, as she graced mankind with impactful information.
"Yes..." The Chancellor nodded. "In the ancient past, before the Era of Olympus, Titan Cronus had a power-hungry idea after becoming so strong—that he could go against the oldest order. One that exists even before the Titans. Nobody knows who they are, but they existed back then.
"He wounded one of the beings from the oldest order, and attained the ambition to overthrow the oldest order. Seeing his victory, the other Titans participated, sharing his bloated ambition until the oldest order was completely defeated.
"The Titans triumphed over the oldest order, but where are they now?" the Chancellor asked.
Kai’s forehead creased behind his mask as he thought the stories over.
Unlike the oldest order, the Titans’ fate was more accessible.
Zeus and the other Gods rose up against the Titans’ reign, and then established Olympus.
All of the Titans that were masters of the cosmos were now either dead, turned into slaves for the Gods to atone for their sins, or imprisoned in the underworld. Chaos spread across every generation because of one entity’s ambition.
It was the reason why the Chancellor refused to let Kai become an Angel.
"I understand how it looked from your perspective. I really do." The Chancellor leaned back, his voice heavy with reluctant authority. "Do you think I did not know it wasn’t right? That I couldn’t see the wrong in everything happening? I knew. Perhaps better than anyone.
"But what else could I do? I cannot allow you to become an Angel and risk the sky."
Of course, Kai blamed the Chancellor back then.
After all, the Blood Rite that he had gone through wasn’t exactly easy.
He was forced to fight tooth and nail in order to pass the Blood Rite—killing many people in the process for the sake of survival. He was turned from a person to a killer. So—when he was denied what he wanted after doing all of that, it was natural for him to be angry.
Furious and hateful.
Back then, Kai thought he was denied what he wanted simply because he was a Lesser Angel.
A burden for mankind.
No matter how hard he tried, he would never amount to anything.
And the sky itself would make sure that he wouldn’t.
But deep down he knew that there was a legitimate reason as to why the Chancellor did that.
It was never personal.
Just that the situation mandated that nobody could rise through the class system in place. One of the lessons that mankind had learned from learning about the Gods. And it was no wonder mankind was strict about it.
"So," the Chancellor looked at Kai profoundly. "What do you think? After knowing my own dilemma, do you still think I should let you become the Red Prince?"
"Yes," Kai answered without hesitation.
"Why is that?"
"You cannot compare me to the Titan Cronus or Zeus. Not because I’m a human—but because, unlike them, I am peerless. I have no peers. Across the Five Layers of Heaven, there’s probably not even one Lesser Angel other than me. If I rise, I inspire nobody because nobody can relate to me."
Kai understood now where the Chancellor was coming from.
He was trying to maintain order.
Regardless of how brutal the conditions for Angels were, they were the fuel for mankind. They were the ones who mined mana ores the most—and supplied Demons with resources in order to grow even stronger.
It was all for the sake of mankind’s survival against the Blue Void.
At this moment, the Blue Void only changed the normal standard of living for mankind.
It summoned Ground and Sky Gates, along with forcing the emergence of Supernals.
But soon, in the future, that would most likely change.
For the high-ranking people of the world, pillars of mankind, the Blue Void is still a dangerous threat to mankind. Not because mankind has no way of defending itself—but because there was still no real way to destroy the Blue Void once and for all.
Not even the Great Oracle Sibylla knew the way to do it.
So, mankind needed to prepare for when its survival was really at stake.
Any disturbances to that process would only risk mankind, including letting Kai rise.
But didn’t have peers.
So, letting him rise won’t repeat what happened to the oldest order and Titans.
"Besides, I would still be a Lesser Angel," Kai added, persuading the Chancellor even further. "Just that I would have another title to shroud what I am. It won’t cause fundamental changes to the sky. And more importantly, it was already proven enough that achieving what I achieve isn’t plausible.
"After all, I was lucky to even be alive."
The Chancellor slowly nodded his head, and then looked down at his desk.
Quite frankly, he didn’t expect Kai to bring up some good points worth deliberating.
On top of the fact that he belonged to a class of his own, the obstacles that he had gone through to even reach the Dragon Ring Tournament were catastrophically dangerous. Anyone who tried to do the same thing would only be committing suicide.
And these points were the last push that the Chancellor needed.
Eventually, he nodded his head.
He opened the drawer, took out a mask from it, and then rose to his feet.
Slowly, confidently, he made his way towards Kai and handed the mask over.
"In that case, change your mask to this," the Chancellor said. "I give you my blessing. Go out there and grasp your new title, Red Prince Kai."
