I Am Not A Goblin Slayer

Chapter 957 - 468: Green Dragon’s Four Great Generals

  • Next Chapter

Since Gauss had previously been away carrying out commissions related to the Dragon’s Nest, this was his first time visiting the main battlefield in person. When the dark plains stretching for dozens of miles presented themselves before his eyes, the shock and palpitation he felt were far beyond what he had experienced during the defense of Outpost 11 and Gray Rock Town. Subconsciously, a person would feel their own insignificance in the face of such a grandiose scene.

A dense, overwhelming horde of monsters surged from the direction of the forest like a mighty river.

"BWAAAAAH!!!"

Waves of charging horns and drumbeats echoed in their ears. Soldiers and Adventurers quickly ran up the side stairs to the city walls. The first batch of soldiers had already donned their Armor, while those in the rear equipped theirs as they ran. Captains shouted at the corners, directing their team members into position.

On the other side, the Adventurers’ preparations were much more diverse. They mostly gathered in squads. Mages reached out to check the portable potion bottles at their waists, ensuring they could access and replenish them at maximum speed. Wanderers inspected their mechanisms, climbing ropes, throwing daggers, traps, and the small gadgets on their boots. Their tasks differed from the Warriors who were responsible for the head-on slaughter. The Wanderers needed to assist their teammates from the flanks, using their familiarity with the terrain to ambush the first wave of monsters that breached the walls. Alternatively, they used wire ropes to help their allies control highly mobile targets, such as flying Demons. When necessary, they also had to swiftly jump down from the walls to collect the loot below.

As for the Warriors, they were completely focused on maintaining their Longswords and broadswords.

After more than half a month of baptism by blood, there were no longer any greenhorns surviving on this battlefield. A real warzone did not give reckless people many chances for trial and error; the price of making a mistake was death, or retreating to the rear for treatment while missing an arm or a leg. On the other hand, those who managed to survive this meat grinder had endured the tempering and achieved breakthroughs that were ordinarily difficult to obtain. Furthermore, with the advantage of the wall fortifications and city defense equipment, even relatively average Adventurers could kill a large number of Demons. For most Adventurers from ordinary backgrounds, this was incredibly attractive. This was also why, despite knowing the dangers of the frontlines, many Adventurers were still willing to fight here, with a continuous stream of reinforcements rushing in from the interior. Simply relying on the slogan of protecting humanity was not enough; there had to be tangible, visible benefits to drive them.

The position assigned to the Red Dragon Team was a hill near the north. Aside from the walls built along the natural pass, many Demons would also charge toward the hills on both sides. However, compared to the walls, this area was much harder to attack. The human side had long used the terrain’s advantage to build towering bunker watchtowers. They only needed to guard a few strategic chokepoints to block the attacks of Demons that outnumbered them several times over.

Gauss slowly floated down from the sky and stood on the low wall of the bunker. Red Dragon Hephaestus also landed on the dome behind him. The bitter wind blew, making Gauss’s pure white Magic Robe flutter wildly. The man and the dragon gazed far into the distance at the surging army of Demons.

Below, aside from the members of the Red Dragon Team, the independent Adventurers who had come to garrison the area also cast gazes of envy and admiration upward. It had to be said that having such a powerful commander presiding over their battlefield, coupled with the massive shadow cast by a true dragon perching on the fortress, provided an incredibly strong sense of security. It gave off an imposing aura, as if one man could hold the pass against ten thousand.

"Isn’t this a bit too flashy?" Aaliyah asked as she and the others came up the stairs from inside the bunker and stood beside Gauss. They knew Gauss was not someone who liked to put on airs; there had to be a purpose for him acting this way now.

"Flashy? This is exactly the effect I want." Gauss chuckled and shook his head.

During the time he had been away, his strength had grown at a rapid pace. Even he couldn’t quite gauge what level his power had reached. However, one thing was clear: the enemy definitely had a massive cognitive error regarding his strength. If they were still using the combat power of someone who had just crossed into the Extraordinary realm to deduce his current strength, they would be dead wrong.

His blatant act of bringing Hephaestus to the top of the mountainside bunker was precisely so those Demons could see him and know he was there. Otherwise, given the cautious and self-preserving nature of those Extraordinary Demons, they were the type who would never strike without seeing a guaranteed advantage. Actively diving deep into the center of the enemy legion to assassinate them would be far too dangerous. Considering what he had done in the rear of the Green Dragon Queen’s territory, if those Extraordinary Demons remained indifferent, they would likely suffer severe consequences once their master safely returned. And before setting off, Gauss had already explained his plan to President Monroe.

Two hours earlier, in the direction of the forest dozens of miles away.

In a camp rarely visited by lower-level Demons, the Extraordinary Demons had gathered to discuss their attack plan. Although they were Demons, at the Extraordinary level, regardless of their race, every Demon leader possessed an intellect no inferior to humans, and they were often even more cunning.

"We must be careful of the humans’ Iron Guard Knight Order," one of the leaders said. "Those are the elites of humanity. Do not clash head-on with their military forces."
