Chapter 376: Chapter 250: Singin’ in the Rain

Jiang He ignored the moron and turned directly to the nurse.

"Throw out the morphine. Get an antispasmodic from the first-aid kit—atropine or dicyclomine. Intramuscular injection, immediately. If you don’t have those, get an NSAID, ketorolac. Hurry!"

Fortunately, the nurse still had her wits about her.

She immediately turned and started rummaging through the first-aid kit.

While they waited for the medication, the old man was still convulsing in pain.

Jiang He crouched down and rolled up the old man’s pant legs.

As everyone watched in confusion, Jiang He located two spots with his thumbs: one on the outer side of the old man’s calf and another below his knee.

The Yanglingquan and Zusanli acupoints.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine meridian theory, these were key acupoints for treating gallbladder diseases and promoting liver and gallbladder health.

Jiang He was trying to find a way to alleviate the old man’s pain.

It had some effect.

Even if it was just a placebo effect, having a doctor physically attending to you, pressing on your acupoints—as a patient, you were bound to feel at least a little better.

The doctors nearby were stunned.

They couldn’t understand how simply pressing two spots could make the old man’s complexion look so much better.

’What is this bizarre Eastern magic?!’

The nurse ran over with the ketorolac she had found.

Jiang He made space, allowing the nurse to give the old man the injection.

With that, the man’s condition stabilized.

Jiang He stood up and walked over to Carter again.

Carter’s head was bowed, his hands clasped together like a child’s. He didn’t even dare to meet Jiang He’s gaze.

The man had been saved.

Jiang He’s mood improved a bit, and his tone wasn’t as harsh.

His voice was cold, and every word was a dagger to the heart:

"Is this the standard of medical care at Hopkins? A child’s game?"

"Someone like you wouldn’t even be able to graduate from my school. You couldn’t even pass the most basic thesis defense."

"Dr. Carter, arrogance won’t just ruin your academic career."

"It will also cost patients their lives."

After speaking, Jiang He couldn’t be bothered to spare him another glance and turned to check on Grandmaster Chen’s condition.

Carter stood frozen, his face ashen.

Just then, Wen Xuyang sneered and walked up to Carter.

He clapped Carter on the shoulder and said mockingly,

"What can a young, twenty-one-year-old Chinese doctor do during a major public safety crisis? I have no idea."

"But I do know one thing: you’re fucking useless! Useless, useless, useless!"

"Hmph!"

When Wen Xuyang finished speaking,

Carter couldn’t even manage a single word in rebuttal.

The chaos in the hotel lobby continued.

But, on closer inspection, there were more doctors present than patients...

Jiang He crouched down, observing Grandmaster Chen’s complexion.

’Good, he’s recovering. The medication is working.’

Grandmaster Chen’s voice was a little weak as he said, "Dr. Jiang... I really owe you for today..."

Jiang He said gently, "You’ve been through a lot. Don’t eat anything greasy for the next few days. As soon as the blizzard stops, go to the hospital immediately for an ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) to get that impacted stone removed."

Grandmaster Chen nodded repeatedly and sighed. "I’ll do everything you say... Dr. Jiang, it’s not easy for us out here. Miss Su told me about your situation. I may not understand Western medicine, but I know you’re a good man. A really good man..."

The sincere admiration in the old man’s eyes was impossible to hide.

After so many years abroad, he wanted to see the standing of Chinese people improve more than anyone.

Jiang He just nodded. "Close your eyes and rest. Conserve your energy."

After getting Grandmaster Chen settled, Jiang He went to wash his hands.

Just then, a bearded American ER doctor hurried over and grabbed Jiang He’s arm.

"Hey! You’re the Chinese doctor from just now, right? The one who calmed that old man with abdominal pain down just by pressing a couple of spots with your fingers?"

Jiang He glanced at him. "I am. What is it?"

"Great! Come help me with something!"

The American doctor led Jiang He to a makeshift treatment area in a corner of the lobby.

A young Black man in his twenties was lying on a sofa, clutching his abdomen tightly and letting out agonized groans.

"Listen, he’s lost a lot of blood and he’s in so much pain that he keeps struggling. We can’t get an IV line in. Can you use that... magic-pressing thing you did earlier? Get him to quiet down right now? We need time to perform a central venous puncture!"

The American doctor looked at Jiang He with great expectation.

Jiang He glanced at the young Black man.

On the right side of his abdomen, just below the edge of his ribs, there was a round, bloody hole, its edges blackened and sunken inward.

Jiang He looked up. "A gunshot wound?"

"Yes, probably a .38 caliber revolver." The American doctor’s reply was matter-of-fact.

Jiang He was silent for two seconds. "There’s a massive ice storm outside. How does a gunshot victim just appear out of nowhere?"

In his mind, when faced with a natural disaster of this magnitude, shouldn’t everyone’s first instinct be to hide at home and save themselves?

The American doctor froze for a second, then gave a bitter laugh.

"Dr. Jiang, welcome to Baltimore."

"This is one of the top three cities for crime in the entire United States. Do you know what it means when a heavy snow takes down the power grid and causes a widespread blackout? It means all the surveillance cameras in the neighborhoods go blind."

"The economy’s been bad lately, and a lot of people have lost their jobs. When the storm hit, gang members took the opportunity, while the police were stuck on the highways, to go out and rob people. This unlucky kid is a cashier. Someone shot him just to steal a few boxes of antibiotics."

After hearing this, Jiang He fell into a long silence.

The American doctor urged him, "Dr. Jiang? Get to it! Use that pressing technique of yours. Press anywhere, just make him stop moving!"
