Chapter 242: Chapter 161: You’re Trying to Overwhelm a Top Grinder?

"Bed 31, upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Go check on the blood prep status and tell the nurses to get a Sengstaken-Blakemore tube ready. We might need to apply pressure to stop the bleeding at any moment."

"Bed 12, late-stage gallbladder cancer. Go straight to the pharmacy and get some morphine sustained-release tablets. Administer them on schedule. Don’t wait until the patient can’t bear the pain anymore."

Throughout the night, Jiang He’s figure barely stopped moving through the wards of the Hepatobiliary Surgery department.

His medical orders were decisive.

His communication with the patients’ families was brief and effective.

It was simply incredible.

Meng Shiyu had originally thought tonight would be an uphill battle.

But he gradually realized he didn’t need to think at all.

Jiang He had organized all the work so meticulously that all Meng Shiyu had to do was execute the orders.

「2:00 AM」

"Teacher Jiang, you... aren’t you tired?" Meng Shiyu asked.

Jiang He was full of energy. "Not at all. If you’re tired, go back and rest. I can handle it."

"Ah... I’m fine, I’m fine."

"Then go write up today’s progress notes. Focus on the change in drainage volume for Bed 25."

"Oh, oh, okay, will do."

「3:30 AM」

Chen Jing was passing through the hallway.

When she saw Jiang He still sitting in front of a computer, she frowned and walked over.

"Dr. Jiang, still haven’t slept?"

Chen Jing glanced at the bed numbers on the screen. "Why so many beds? Two people managing fifteen beds? No, wait, Meng Shiyu is new, so it’s really just you managing them all, isn’t it?"

Jiang He looked up and smiled. "The Medical Affairs Department arranged it. The able do more, right?"

Having knocked around the hospital for several years herself, Chen Jing’s frown deepened when she heard this.

"Isn’t this ridiculous? They’re trying to work you to death! Director Ma’s scheduling is outrageous. You were specially approved by Dean Chen. Isn’t he afraid of getting in trouble with the higher-ups for doing this?"

"It’s all within the rules. It’s just normal scheduling, so who can find fault? It’s fine, Sister Jing. I can handle it."

Chen Jing looked at Jiang He’s calm profile, a strange feeling stirring in her heart.

She had seen too many young doctors complain endlessly at the nurses’ station after being assigned heavy workloads, some even slamming down patient charts in frustration.

But Jiang He wasn’t one of them.

He just sat there quietly, tackling the work others would see as a deliberate hardship, piece by piece.

"You’re just too good-natured," Chen Jing sighed. "If you need any help, just call me. I’ll go get you a cup of coffee."

"Alright, thanks, Sister Jing."

「6:00 AM」

Zhao Yumin, a senior attending from the Emergency Department, had just finished his night shift. He came upstairs to the Hepatobiliary Surgery department to check on a patient who had been transferred from the ER the previous night.

Just as he reached the nurses’ station, he saw Jiang He performing an abdominal examination on a newly admitted patient.

Zhao Yumin stood at the doorway of the patient’s room, watching silently without a word.

Jiang He’s technique was textbook-perfect. His few diagnostic questions cut straight to the point, quickly ruling out the possibility of peritonitis.

After finishing the exam, Jiang He gave a few instructions to a nurse, then turned to leave the room, coming face to face with a complex-looking Zhao Yumin.

"Teacher Zhao, morning," Jiang He greeted him.

Zhao Yumin nodded and pulled Jiang He into a corner of the hallway. "I heard you’ve been assigned fifteen beds? And they’re all hard cases?"

"Yeah, just took them on."

Zhao Yumin had seen it all in the ER; there wasn’t much that could surprise him.

After a moment’s thought, he understood the politics at play.

"The Medical Affairs Department, right? Trying to crush someone with workload. Fucking shameless."

Zhao Yumin looked at Jiang He, and seeing his unfazed expression, he actually felt a sense of admiration.

"You’ve got a good head on your shoulders, kid. But don’t you worry. Good deeds don’t go unnoticed. Everyone sees how many lives you’ve saved. Ma Huaide’s style of petty meddling won’t last. Does he think he can screw with you with a few tough beds? I see seventy or eighty patients a night in the ER and I’m still alive and kicking. I’ll have Chen Hao come up and help you with your charts today."

Jiang He’s heart warmed at his words.

This was the kind of camaraderie forged in the trenches of clinical work.

No one cared about phony allegiances or picking sides. They only respected skill, only cared if you had the real ability to save people.

"Teacher Zhao, there’s no need to trouble Chen Hao. Besides, even if that kid came, he wouldn’t be much help."

Jiang He smiled. "This bit of work, I can really finish it myself. You should hurry back and get some rest. Your eyes are all red."

Zhao Yumin stared at Jiang He for a few seconds, and after confirming he wasn’t just putting on a brave face, he finally nodded.

"Alright, as long as you know what you’re doing. Remember, don’t just tough it out. This is a hospital, not some dictator’s playground. If you need to make a scene, we’ll all back you up."

Watching Zhao Yumin’s back as he walked toward the elevator, Jiang He stretched lazily.

’The first wave of attacks, and this is it?’

He flexed his wrists and walked toward the next room.

The morning handoff was fast approaching. He had to memorize the latest vital signs and lab results for all fifteen of his patients before the directors and attending physicians began their rounds.

There’s a saying:

When you scheme against the strong, the hardships you create for them will ultimately become the rungs on their ladder to the top.

Of course, this time it just so happened that Jiang He wanted to manage more beds. If they dared to pull something like this again, the outcome might not be the same.

At 8:00 AM, the main morning handoff for the Hepatobiliary Surgery department officially began.
