Wang Chao’s eyes suddenly flew open, his pupils constricting slightly.

"Hey, you guys, look..."

He pointed into the distance, a look of bewilderment on his face as he frantically shook Zhang Liang.

"What is that!?"

In the distance, they saw...

Densely packed, humanoid black shadows?

’What... What the hell is this?’

Xu Huo froze, then narrowed his eyes.

[Eye of Delight!]

An invisible shimmer materialized, coating his eyes.

...

...

Meanwhile.

Inside a small pavilion.

The directors of the Special Fifth Bureau and the Special Seventh Bureau sat beneath the pavilion, clad in winter coats and sipping steaming hot tea.

"Hoo..."

"The New Year is almost here, and with this heavy snow again... I have a feeling this one’s not going to be peaceful."

An old man spoke up. He was the director of the Special Seventh Bureau.

"Bah, public safety this year... Public safety in the Capital City is still excellent. Homicide rates keep dropping, and we didn’t have a single case in December."

The director of the Special Fifth Bureau, Wang Tao, said with a smile.

They were also responsible for public safety, investigating jointly with the police, so he was familiar with the statistics.

"Tsk. It’s a different story in Linlan City and Jiangsan City."

Suddenly, the director of the Seventh Bureau turned the conversation to the two cities that had been ’making headlines’ this year.

Those two cities had become infamous in the Capital City. As the year drew to a close, a few cases had cropped up that left the capital’s residents completely stunned.

In just a few short months, those cases had been a real eye-opener for people like them.

Never mind all of them combined—any single one of those cases, if it had happened in the Capital City, would have been considered a massive investigation!

But there had been five such major cases!

And even if you don’t count the one in Zhaozhou, that’s still four!

Holy crap. The people of the Capital City were left speechless. Before one case was even solved, another would pop up...

"Tsk. Speaking of which, those two kids are in the Capital City now, aren’t they?"

"The kids are alright, and their business proposal was pretty good, too. I looked it over. The application’s been submitted. It’s just... their luck is rotten."

Wang Tao shook his head and glanced at the still-falling snow.

"Yeah, at this point, I’m starting to wonder if this snow has something to do with those two!"

The director of the Seventh Bureau shook his head and clicked his tongue. "Tsk, you might be onto something there."

"Other than the snow, has anything else happened in the few days they’ve been here?"

At this, a smile spread across Wang Tao’s face.

"I was prepared for that."

"Security in the Capital City is airtight right now. Not a single incident to report!"

"Besides, I found out who those two kids were ahead of time. I had a bad feeling, so I arranged for them to be... escorted out."

"The heavy snow just delayed things a bit."

Wang Tao grinned, the picture of confidence.

"By my calculations, they should be boarding their flight right about now."

"A little snow like this won’t stop a plane from taking off. I figure they’ll be in Linlan City or Jiangsan City before we know it."

The director of the Seventh Bureau raised an eyebrow. "You were just giving me a hard time, and now look at you, being just as superstitious."

Wang Tao laughed. "This is called being prepared!"

"It’s not superstition. It’s caution and giving the situation the respect it deserves."

The director of the Seventh Bureau looked away and shook his head.

"Still, I’m not so sure. The things I’ve seen... they all have a certain karmic logic to them."

"On the surface, they seem to make perfect sense, but when you really think about them, they’re enough to make your skin crawl... and then there are the truly strange cases."

"Take that case you handed over to us last time. A body, chopped to pieces and thrown in the river. When the police hit a dead end, the remains traveled dozens of kilometers upstream, right back to the killer."

"That’s not something that can be explained by conventional means."

Wang Tao wasn’t annoyed by this.

He just chuckled, knowing the man before him had seen so many strange things it had warped his way of thinking.

With that, he pulled out his phone.

"There aren’t that many strange things in the world. A healthy dose of caution is fine, but there’s no need to be superstitious."

"I already told you about the precautions I’ve taken, and you still don’t believe me..."

"Alright, fine. I’ll make a call right now to confirm."

Wang Tao said, scrolling through his phone to find Zhang Liang’s number.

A grin spread across his face.

"I’ll make a believer out of you yet!"
