Chapter 712: Sin is Kindness
The night police didn’t come from this city. Only outsiders could join the night police. The elder voiced the night police’s secret. Black Crow and Corpse Ghost glared at him. This city was very xenophobic. If too many people figured out the night police’s secret, they would all be in danger.
“I’ve eked out a living for decades and know every rule of this city. It is like a piece of rotten meat filled with pus. From the government to the poor district, every corner is dominated by filth. I’ve been through so much and finally found the best path forward for the night police.” The old man was cornered. The night police could not harm each other, but the people from the poor district could. “You’re still too young and silly! When this city aims its malice at you, it’ll be too late!”
The guns were pointed at the old man. With an order from Black Crow, they would shoot without hesitation.
“The purpose of this city is to cultivate darkness. The first night police officer was a trapped sinner. Our original sin was kindness. We have to suffer because we have justice in our blood. The despair comes from our sense of responsibility.
“To survive in this city, we have to abandon all the shackles and shirk off the rules of the night police to follow the rules of this city!” Black lines floated into the old man’s murky eyes. Strangely enough, he was still rational. “You’ll eventually become like me. I’ll never die. Even if you kill me, you’ll only become me!”
A beastial roar came out of the old man’s chest. His ribs opened like teeth. His heart grew mutated with each beat, like it was generating something scary. The old man had been cultivating malice in his heart. The longer he lived, the more terrifying the malice became. There were many chances where he could be killed, but no one dared to do anything lest the malice in his heart lose control and create a super monster. The safest method was to inject him with a suppressor before his malice was triggered. If his heart and mind couldn’t unite, the monster’s power would be limited. However, this was easier said than done. When the old man chose to release the malice, it would be when he was cornered. He would never abide by the limitations put on him.
The old man had the nickname Old Dog. He was susceptible to hostility and refused to let anyone get close to him. One needed less than three seconds to release the malice. To get close to the old man and inject the medicine into his heart in less than three seconds was too tricky. Just in case the enemy’s bullets contained suppressing agents, the old man hid behind ‘Gao Ming’. He only needed to wait for three seconds, and then he’d be consumed by malice. Then, a super monster would be born in him, and he would kill everyone in sight. His eyes were taken over by hatred and malice. The old man glared at Black Crow. Before he could say anything, he felt a pain in his heart. He lowered his head to look. The ‘monster’ he used as a shield stabbed the syringes into his deformed heart. The monster’s eyes were covered in red and black lines. His eyes shone with intellect!
“Impossible!” The old man had never seen someone who could retain their sanity after they were swallowed by malice. He had killed so many monsters. He was very familiar with this.
“I told you to come find me, and you did. Thank you.” The bloody lips moved. The monster spoke.
The familiar voice entered his ears. The old man was reminded of the time they met. “You have planned this! I will kill you!”
The injections were completed. Black lines appeared on the monster’s arm. He held the old man by his head and slammed him into the wall. With a splat, the old man’s head burst open like a flower.
“Move!” Black Crow warned. The monster quickly retreated. The guns fired all at once, but it did nothing to chase away the chill. The old man’s body was dismantled by gunshots. His body reeked horribly, like it had decayed for years.
Black malice crawled through the rot. The wiggling black capillaries were like worms as they reconstructed the old man’s body. The eyeballs fell apart. Black threads crawled out of the eye sockets to consume the old man’s face, turning him into a stranger.
Its body started to expand. The internal organs moved independently, like they were alive. Thanks to the injections, they were unable to coagulate and form a new shape. Eventually, everything exploded. Pieces of the old man ended up everywhere.
“112.” Black Crow studied the reading on the danger source device. His scalp numbed. In his memory, he had not encountered a patient with a danger rating of over 100. “Even with the suppressors, his danger rating was over 100. How could the old man have cultivated something so disgusting and scary?”
The door opened. Corpse Ghost stood at the door. He frowned as he looked around. “Black Crow, you said you’d blame Old Dog’s death on the taboo zone. However, he had died outside. His organic tissues are everywhere. What do you plan to do now?”
Two gunshots rang out. The woman with the ruined face and the dog man on the roof pulled the trigger simultaneously. The tall figure collapsed. Corpse Ghost had tortured many humans who had to enter the taboo zone. Most of them came from the poor district.
“Seven minutes and twelve seconds. We have ten minutes to eliminate our traces.”
The dog people put away their weapons and jumped down from the roof. A figure approached Black Crow from behind.
“Can these people be trusted?” It was Gao Ming who spoke. The old man thought he was a monster.
Before the old man came, he was forced to manipulate the malice in his heart to show Corpse Ghost that he could temporarily suppress malice. When Black Crow arrived, Corpse Ghost was forced to cooperate with them.
Black Crow injected sufficient accelerant into Gao Ming to falsify his ‘monsterification’. They did everything to ambush the old man.
“The dog people in the poor district are puppets without souls. They can sell anything and everything to survive. They are willingly controlled by drugs.” When Black Crow said these things, his eyes shone with pity. However, it was soon silenced by aloofness. “This is the path they chose. All we could do was to pay them enough money.”
