Chapter 2768: Story 2769: The Choice Before Creation
Ronan stared at the golden door.
Behind it, something breathed again, and the sound shook dust from the ancient ceiling. The red light surrounding him flickered between crimson and gold, as if two different beings were fighting for control of his body.
“Destroy what you have become?” Ronan whispered. “What does that mean?”
The voice answered from beyond the door.
“It means remembering the truth.”
The golden mark on his chest split wider.
Ronan collapsed, and the world disappeared.
He stood beneath a sky without stars. There was no earth, no wind, no horizon—only endless darkness and a solitary throne carved from something that resembled bone.
A child sat upon it.
The child had Ronan’s face, but his eyes contained the exhaustion of countless lifetimes.
“You finally came back,” the child said.
Ronan approached cautiously. “Are you the Firstborn?”
The child shook his head.
“I was what existed before the Firstborn. Before your brothers. Before your mother gave the darkness a name.”
“Then who are you?”
The child looked down at his hands.
“The one who wanted to be loved.”
A terrible silence followed.
Images appeared around the throne: the primordial being standing alone in the emptiness, the first living heart beating in its hands, and the moment it devoured that gift because it could not understand how to keep it.
Then came betrayal.
The Firstborn refused the inheritance. The mother divided the ancient power. The Father built kingdoms to contain what remained.
And the forgotten child was sealed away with the heart that had once belonged to the darkness.
Ronan understood, but the truth made him sick.
“You are the thing behind the door.”
“I am what it became.”
The child raised his head.
“And you carry the last memory of what I was.”
A crack split the empty sky.
“If you remember everything, I will become whole again. If you destroy that memory, I will cease to exist.”
Ronan stepped back. “And everyone else?”
The child’s eyes filled with tears.
“They may survive.”
“May?”
“Creation was built upon my existence. No one knows what will remain when I am gone.”
Suddenly, Lyra’s voice reached him from impossibly far away.
“Ronan! Come back!”
The vision trembled.
The child seized Ronan’s wrist.
“Listen carefully. The being beyond the door is not the only prisoner.”
The throne began crumbling.
“Your mother locked away my name. Your Father locked away my heart. But someone else stole my face and wore it as a crown.”
Ronan froze.
“Who?”
The child leaned close.
“Look at Cael.”
The vision shattered.
Ronan awoke in Lyra’s arms. The golden door stood open, revealing a vast chamber filled with suspended chains and countless empty thrones.
His brothers stared in disbelief.
Cael stood apart from them, his face pale.
Ronan slowly rose.
“You knew,” he said.
Cael said nothing.
Then, from inside the chamber, a familiar voice called softly.
“Little brother?”
Cael closed his eyes.
A second Cael stepped out of the darkness, wearing a crown of living bone.
And the real Cael whispered, “It has found me.”
