Chapter 3043: Chapter 56: A Task Handled Casually
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The enormous knocking sounds woke the people from their sleep.
Zheng Qing opened his eyes, and although the office was still somewhat dim, the bright colors of the sun were already reflected on the closed curtains. He licked his dry lips, only to find a lingering bitterness reminiscent of a hangover.
It took him a while to realize he was lying in the office of the Dean of the Peripheral College.
After dinner yesterday, it was already late. The owner of Greenhill Mansion repeatedly urged him to stay there. If he were alone, Zheng Qing might have agreed half-heartedly, but with another witch eyeing him nearby, he wisely decided otherwise.
Only after leaving the mansion did the question of where to sleep suddenly become urgent for Zheng Qing.
He was no longer a student, so the dormitory was naturally out of the question.
At this hour, D&K was likely closed.
The Xuanhuang Palace is now just a big pit. If he was willing to turn into a cat, he could spend the night on the Xuanhuang Tree or Cat Fruit Tree. But if discovered, the dignity belonging to both the school dean and the legendary wizard would be utterly lost.
In just over ten steps, numerous thoughts flashed through Zheng Qing’s mind, and he finally decided to spend the night in the dean’s office.
Behind him, at the gate of Greenhill Mansion, the gaze of the two witches still seemed glued to him—he chose to leave just now, but Jiang Yu chose to stay, making him feel even more wise in his decision.
Boom! Boom!
The knocking sounded again.
The sound was very rude.
Zheng Qing raised his eyebrows slightly, curious about who was so bold as to act out in front of a legendary wizard’s office door. The ’Taiyi’ ring on his hand glowed slightly red, magic power circulating throughout him, dispelling that touch of drunkenness lingering in his body. Originally, he retained that bit of drunkenness to find a little sense of reality, but clearly, it wasn’t time to be sentimental.
A moment later, sitting with an imposing expression behind the desk, the young man snapped his fingers.
The office door swung open with a bang.
Revealing a black cat the size of a leopard—Zheng Qing realized suddenly, perhaps only this shadow cat and a few others on Buji Island could be so disrespectful.
"What..."
He had just begun to speak two words when the shadow cat’s mocking voice interrupted him.
"Before speaking, wipe off the red marks on your face!"
The shadow cat seemed in a bad mood; with every step, its body grew larger, filling the dean’s office in just a few paces: "Why did someone dump a big box of task files in my office today?"
Zheng Qing awkwardly used magic to fix the marks on his face, pausing at the words.
"What box?"
"A box filled with task files! With a note saying it was personally accepted by ’Order Chief’ with your seal!"
Yesterday, Zheng Qing used his seal rarely.
He immediately recalled.
"Oh, it was at the party yesterday, a guy in a blue robe found me, said he had a thorny case he didn’t know how to handle and wanted to seek Order’s help. I thought it wasn’t a big deal and told him to send the files over to take a look..."
"Foolish! Foolish! Foolish!"
The shadow cat’s enraged roar echoed in the small office: "How could you, the head of ’Order’, not know the most important thing about Order is ’rules’? Accepting tasks casually like this, what’s going on? Has this matter been collectively deliberated by the ’relevant departments’? You’re looking for trouble!"
Zheng Qing found the shadow cat somewhat overreacting: "—Cough, we’re all in the same department, and I didn’t agree to help, just said to look at the files first..."
"You’re the head of Order, not the receptionist!"
The shadow cat’s head crossed over the massive desk, almost swallowing the office owner whole: "Your files have backups at First University, Great Wizard Conference, Danghag, Moon Council, even Dark Council, Land of Desolation, etc.! You should usually learn to lock your pockets tight, shut your office windows, wear your cat skin well when outside, and use the fake name ’Andrew’ when dealing with others!"
"I’m not called Andrew..." the young legend feebly corrected.
"Is that the point?!"
The shadow cat’s saliva sprayed everywhere: "Using a fake name is not about worry over assassination; it’s because you’re the big boss of the ’relevant department’! Many lazy or bad folks love to dump cases they can’t handle on us because they know the ’relevant department’ has vast discretionary power... We can pretend not to know many things, but once you take on their tasks, we can no longer pretend!"
"Sounds like laziness or dereliction of duty." Zheng Qing realized he might have made a mistake but persisted despite feeling intimidated.
Their positions subtly shifted in their confrontation.
Zheng Qing moved outside the desk, while the shadow cat sat in his previous chair.
Upon hearing the warlock’s sophistry, the shadow cat took a deep breath: "—The whole Alliance wishes to dismantle the ’great wizards of the relevant department; there are not eighty of them, but at least a hundred... Do you think holding Forbidden Curse lets you do whatever you want? Stupid! Utterly stupid!"
"And this task..."
"What task?"
"Oh, let me see," the young legend recalled the small note he casually accepted yesterday, hurriedly searching his grey cloth bag, muttering: "I remember it’s about..."
"Merlin’s shorts!!"
The shadow cat’s expression twisted in a roar: "The words [What task] were meant to tell you [we don’t know about this task!] not to go open it! Have zombies eaten your brains?"
"Huh?...oh!"
The head of Order coughed to disguise his embarrassment, glanced at the note he just pulled out, and added: "Hmm, this task can’t entirely say it’s unrelated to the relevant department... It’s a report about a secret organization inside the Great Wizard Conference conducting illegal dimensional experiments..."
"Get out!"
"?"
"Before I tear out your tongue or make my own ears bleed, get out of my office!" the black cat’s snarl made the windows buzz: "The crap you picked up, clean it yourself... Don’t talk to me before washing your hands clean! Not a single word!"
"Oh." The warlock obediently exited the office, then stuck his head back in a second later: "That ’Ow’ just now was already a word..."
Bang!
A kettle full of hot water crashed heavily against the wall, scorching tea spilling everywhere.
Lucky for Zheng Qing, his head retracted quickly enough not to take the black cat’s furious hit.
Then, after wandering a few steps along the corridor, he realized—he was kicked out of his own dean’s office, which was originally his office.
