Chapter 367 - 367: Unbroken Seal

They put the courier in the room next to Pell, not because it was kind, because it was close enough to compare the two mouths if one of them started borrowing the other.

The man was Gousel issue down to the dust on his boots.

He knew it too, which only made the gap in him uglier.

"I left on tax paper, ordinary run, Marquis's mark, two days, I can still see the gate sergeant waving me out, I can still see the first mile of the south road, after that it turns into weather."

Rigel stood off the bed so the man would have to lift his head to find him.

"Weather how."

"Like I ate, I must have eaten, you don't sit a horse that long on nothing, but I can't name the inn, I can't name the slop, I only remember someone asking if I wanted the bowl refilled and I said yes because that's what you say, and then my hands were white to the wrist and I thought it was flour from the kitchen."

He turned his palms up.

The smell was still there.

Sweet.

Wrong.

Cynthia stayed by the door.

"The letter," she said.

He nodded at the bag on the table, careful, as if the leather might take offense.

"That's why I came in asking, I didn't open it, I don't open Marquis paper, I just need someone to tell me I didn't already hand it over in a room I forgot, because if I did, and I'm here again with the same bag, then I have been riding in a circle like a fool."

Rigel broke the seal himself.

Balzac's hand.

Short.

No panic in the wording, which was how you could tell his father had written it before the house knew it should panic.

Stay several days as agreed, your mother wants a letter not a rumor, Blade will hoard the ugly details until you pry, if Mesterica is already breaking furniture you may consider that normal, do not formalize anything with the Blade girl on paper until I have spoken to her father standing up.

That was all.

Family.

Form.

The kind of letter that should have bored a courier half to sleep.

Erna leaned in, read it over his arm, and made a face.

"That's it? That's what he carried through a hole in his own head, a father telling you not to get married?"

"That's what left Gousel," Rigel said, and turned the paper over.

The back had been clean when Balzac sealed it.

It was not clean now.

A pale film had dried in a line of script so thin it looked like the paper had grown veins, and the veins said, in no one's handwriting worth claiming,

the little one still looks at the bird when she is scared, ask the maker if that is allowed

Mesterica took the sheet, held it to the window, and her voice came out low.

"This was added after the seal, or under it, I don't care which, what I care about is that it uses the bird."

The courier watched them the way a man watches a court that has not yet decided he is guilty.

"If that was on there when I left, I would have seen it, I check the outside of a packet, I check the weight, I don't read the Lord's mail but I know when extra paper has been stuffed in, that line wasn't stuffed, it looks grown."

Rigel folded the letter so the back disappeared.

"You said a kitchen. Was there a well."

The courier's mouth opened, shut, then found it with obvious relief at finding anything.

"There was a cover, I remember thinking it was nailed badly, I remember a man on a bench with a child's toy, I almost asked him for water and then I didn't, because he looked like he was already doing a job and I have been told not to interrupt men doing stupid jobs they were ordered to do."

Jorn.

The first mile of the wrong village, stitched into a two-day ride.

Cynthia's hand tightened on the latch.

"He passed Riverbend and kept the seal, so they didn't need the letter opened, they only needed the hands that were carrying it."

Pell thumped the wall once from the next room, muffled, like applause.

Rigel ignored that.

"Calden writes the two letters anyway, they still go out, and this courier does not take them, he does not sleep in the servants' wing, he does not drink, he sits where Mesterica can see his mouth."

The courier let out a shaky breath that wanted to be a laugh and failed.

"I will sit, I will be glad to sit, sitting is the first instruction today that sounds like it belongs to a living man."

Erna jerked her chin at the folded paper.

"And the bird line, you going to pretend you didn't read it, or are you going to admit they are already in the house far enough to watch a girl hold a toy."

Rigel put the letter inside his coat, same side as the packet, and the packet stayed cool, which he liked less every time it happened.

"They want me to ride tonight, they want the Count unsupervised, they want the well cover moved while Jorn is still proud of his hands, so I am not riding tonight, I am sending a man who has never heard Miena's name and telling Dolly that any voice like mine is a liar until it comes with tax seals and Father's ugly handwriting."

Mesterica was already at the door, because movement was the only argument she respected.

"Then say the line I put on the page, not the line they grew, I will not carry their flour-script to a post horse."

"You carry mine," Rigel said.

"No guest, no opened door, sisters in sight of each other, no room with a circle, and if Dolly hears a command that sounds like kindness she treats it as an attack."

Cynthia looked at him for a second too long.

"That last part is for the maid, or for you."

"It's for anyone who has already learned to stop when I talk."

From under the floor, very faint, came the third-bell tap, one-two, watch change, and the courier flinched as if the kitchen had followed him into the chair.

He swallowed, stared at his own white-stained cuffs, and said, almost politely,

"If I start asking how many people sleep in your north wing, I would take it as a favor if someone hit me before I finished the sentence."
