“Do you have any idea that because of you, she was almost run over by your boyfriend’s car?”

Agnes’ sudden accusation left Alana momentarily speechless.

Especially that line: “She was almost run over by your boyfriend.”

What does this have to do with Stephan?

“What do you mean?”

Seeing Alana’s bewildered expression, as if she knew nothing, Agnes felt even more disappointed in her.

At a time like this, was she still going to play dumb?

“Did you tell your boyfriend about me looking for you yesterday? Was it you who whispered in his ear, telling him to drive into Darla? How could you be so cruel? Even if Darla likes your boyfriend, you can’t be so malicious as to try to kill her, can you?”

Agnes’ eyes were filled with disappointment and reproach toward Alana.

It was as if she were asking Alana how she could have given birth to such a cunning and vicious daughter.

And Alana understood exactly what Agnes meant.

Yesterday, after she and Stephan had gone wild back at home, while she was fast asleep, Stephan, to vent his anger on her behalf, drove out and crashed into Darla’s car.

So that’s it... she finally understood why Stephan’s left hand was injured.

It turned out he’d accidentally injured it while ramming into Darla’s car.

And it was all because of her.

That idiot Stephan!

Even if he was trying to get even for her, he shouldn’t have used a method that ended up hurting both of them, right?

Alana felt both heartbroken and furious.

Now, facing Agnes’ indiscriminate accusations, she had figured it out: that woman, Darla, must have said something to Agnes after she got back.

Like how she was hit by Stephan’s car, that it was her doing, that she was the root of all evil.

And Agnes had actually believed it without a shred of doubt.

Alana curled her lips. “If I told you I didn’t do it, would you believe me?”

Agnes frowned, clearly reluctant to believe her.

Seeing Agnes’ reaction, Alana couldn’t help but chuckle. “That’s just fine. You believe everything Darla says, but you don’t believe a word I say.”

It took Agnes a moment to realize she hadn’t even asked Alana about this yet.

“No, that’s not it. I just came over to confirm with you whether you actually treated Darla that way.”

Alana retorted, “Just to confirm? You just clearly accused me of it. Darla told you that I was the one whispering in my boyfriend’s ear, telling him to drive his car into hers. You even called me excessive and ruthless because of that. Isn’t that exactly what you said from the very beginning?”

Agnes couldn’t help but ask, “So isn’t what she said true? Didn’t you tell your boyfriend about this?”

“Yes, I did. So what?”

Agnes frowned. “It was because you told your boyfriend that he drove into Darla, wasn’t it?”

“In the end, it’s still your fault!”

Agnes couldn’t help but say, “Lana, you’ve really let me down. I never thought you’d turn out to be this kind of person.”

Disappointed?

The woman least qualified to be disappointed in her was none other than Agnes herself!

Alana’s expression grew colder. “What kind of person I’ve become, is that any of your business?”

Agnes retorted, “Lana, I’m your mother. How can you say it has nothing to do with me? No matter what you become, it has a direct connection to me!”

“Hah.” Alana really felt like she was laughing out of sheer exasperation.

“So now you realize you’re my mom?Since you knew you were my mom, you shouldn’t have abandoned me when I was five just for a man! And you shouldn’t have neglected me for over a decade just for your so-called happiness and wealth!”

“And now, just because your adopted daughter happens to have fallen for the same man I do, you’ve come to me, using your status as my mother, to try to convince me to break up with my boyfriend. Have you ever stopped to think whether I even recognize you as my mother?”

Agnes’ heart ached under the barrage of questions. “I admit it was wrong of me to abandon you back then. You were so young, and you’d just been cast aside by your father’s family, that was exactly when you needed me as your mother. But back then, life was incredibly hard for me. I could barely support myself, let alone raise a child like you.”

“I admit I was selfish. I left with that man because I knew my life might not be so hard afterward. But I had no choice, I had no other options at the time. Only by hardening my heart and abandoning you could I follow him and give us a chance at a better life.”

“Even though we were separated, I always found ways to send money home so you could have a better life. It was far better than living with me, where we’d barely have enough to eat or clothes to keep us warm.”

Alana clenched her fists, her eyes welling up with tears.

“Agnes, have you ever asked me what kind of life I wanted? So what if I don’t have enough to eat or warm clothes? At least I have a mother. I wasn’t mocked from childhood all the way through to adulthood... I wouldn’t have been a child that both parents rejected!”

“You say it’s to give me a better life, but that’s just your selfish desire to make your own life better. After you abandoned me, you didn’t care about me at all, you were too busy enjoying your own good life to spare even a single thought for me. At the end of the day, you only did this and you’re still doing this for yourself. Don’t try to make it sound noble by claiming it’s for both of us!”

“I...”

Faced with Alana’s barrage of accusations, Agnes was left speechless.

Could it be that, all these years, she really had made the wrong choice?

Shouldn’t she have abandoned Alana and chosen to be with a wealthy man instead? But if she hadn’t made that choice, it was uncertain whether she and Alana, just a mother and her fatherless daughter, could have survived those hard times.

Back then, as a divorced woman with a child in tow, it was difficult enough just to find a decent job.

But at that time, a man was willing to marry her and help her escape her current predicament. Any reasonable person would know which choice to make.

She tried hard to convince Andrew, as if she were trying just as hard to convince herself.

“Lana, since I married that man, I didn’t leave you empty-handed. I always gave you 100,000 dollars every month, and haven’t you been spending that money quite happily?” She didn’t understand why Alana would take the money she offered and then confront her like this.

“100,000?” Alana found it laughable. “In all these years, I haven’t seen a single penny from you. Where did you get the idea that you gave me 100,000 a month?”

Agnes frowned. “Lana , you’re lying to me again. I know you resent me, so you won’t admit you’ve taken my money.”

Alana sneered, “What am I lying to you about? Agnes, you really think too highly of yourself. What do you have that would make me want to deceive you?”

Agnes was taken aback and quickly shook her head. “That’s not it. I’ve really been sending 100,000 dollars to your aunt, Miranda, every month so you can live a good life. Your aunt said you’ve been living very well on that money, buying clothes, shoes, bags, and jewelry to your heart’s content!”

“That is the compensation I’ve given you for abandoning you all these years, you’ve accepted it all, haven’t you?”

She assumed Alana had accepted the money, which is why she believed Alana acknowledged her as a mother and approved of her actions back then.

Alana grew impatient. “I don’t know what that woman Miranda told you, or what you told her, but let me tell you one more thing: I haven’t received a single cent from you!”

Agnes couldn’t believe it. “No, that’s impossible! I’ve sent you so much money, and I’ve been doing it for so many years... there’s no way you haven’t received a single penny! You must be lying to me. That’s not what Miranda told me. It’s not true!”

Alana laughed sarcastically. “At the end of the day, you don’t even believe a word I say. True. Otherwise, how could you so easily believe Darla’s one-sided account? She said I was whispering sweet nothings in Stephan’s ear, convincing him to run her over with his car, and you just believed her.”

“Why don’t you think about it carefully, did she actually see me whispering in Stephan’s ear with her own eyes? And you know full well that my boyfriend and I are in a mutual, committed relationship. Just because Darla said she likes my boyfriend, you’re telling me to break up with him!”

“She’s the one with no boundaries, she’s the immoral one trying to steal my boyfriend. Not only did you fail to convince her to give up, you had to show up in front of me just to make things worse!”
