Help! My One-Night Stand Is Examining Me?!
Chapter 341 For her own good
Agnes didn’t want things to escalate to the point where Alana and Darla were at each other’s throats.
Both were her daughters, one her biological child, bound by deep blood ties, and the other someone she’d cared for over a decade, with an unbreakable bond...
Deep down, she didn’t want them to fight over a man.
When Alana heard Agnes say, “It’s for her own good,” she couldn’t help but laugh.
She’d abandoned her for over a decade, and the first time they met after all that time was to make her break up with Stephan, and then, out of nowhere, she blurted out that it was “for her own good”?
How ridiculous does that sound?
“Ms. Agnes, do you even know what ‘for my own good’ means? You haven’t seen me in over a decade. You haven’t been a part of my life in the slightest. You don’t even know what I like or dislike, and yet you claim to know what’s best for me? Don’t you think what you’re saying is pretty funny?”
“I do!” Agnes hurriedly said, “Although I haven’t been by your side these past ten years, I’ve been watching over you every single moment, making sure you’re doing well. It’s not that I don’t care about you; I just couldn’t help it... I couldn’t just come back to see you whenever I wanted.”
Alana frowned. “You’ve been keeping an eye on me all this time? How exactly?”
Agnes replied earnestly, “I asked your uncle and aunt to take good care of you, and they’ve been updating me on your situation every few days.”
“Even though I’m not by your side, hearing them tell me every day that you’re with them, doing well, and happy every day makes me feel as though you’re right here with me, just as beautiful and vibrant as ever.”
Even if she couldn’t see Alana and her daughter, she would still care about Alana’s every move, just as she had before.
Only when she knew Alana was doing well could she put her mind at ease.
Why does this sound funnier the more I hear it?
She shouldn’t have asked in the first place.
“You asked them to take care of me, didn’t you? Take care of me? To the point where I’m working myself to death every day, doing their laundry, cooking their meals, and handling all kinds of household chores? And if I don’t do it right, not only do I get beaten and yelled at, but they don’t even feed me?”
That was not taking care of anyone that was deliberate torture!
Agnes’ eyes widened. “No way! There’s no way I’d let them treat you like that! I meant for them to offer help when you’re struggling and show you a little familial concern, not treat you like that!”
Alana smiled. “I think you’re missing the point. What I mean is, these past ten-odd years, I haven’t had it easy, and I haven’t been happy. You asked my uncles and aunts to look after me, but none of them ever took care of me properly. They all looked down on me and couldn’t wait to kick me out of their family. To win their favor, I had to work for them every day. If I didn’t do it well, I’d be punished, I was left covered in bruises every single day. Is that what you call living a good life... being unhappy every single day?”
Agnes couldn’t believe it and shook her head quickly, saying, “No, that’s impossible! That’s not what they told me!”They said they take excellent care of you, treated you like royalty every day, and whenever there’s something delicious to eat or drink, you’re the first to get it! At the family’s house, you lack for nothing. They love and cherish you, treating you like their own daughter. You were happy and content every day!”
To ensure they took good care of Alana, she even sent them a substantial amount of money every month.
Alana even received 100,000 dollars in living expenses every month.
She felt that, as a mother, she was trying her best.
At least she was far better than those women who abandoned their daughters to remarry, then ignored them completely...
Alana smiled again, finding Agnes’ behavior quite unreasonable.
“If you want to listen to what they say, go ahead, it has nothing to do with me.”
It was her mistake to have talked to Agnes so much.
Perhaps there was a lingering sense of resentment in her heart.
Agnes couldn’t help but say, “Lana, I really thought you were doing well...”
Her mind was in a jumble right now; she couldn’t tell whether Alana was right or if the other people’s words had been the ones to listen to.
Alana cut her off. “Enough. Stop talking about this. I don’t want to hear it. Also, let me tell you this: Stephan is the only man I want to spend the rest of my life with. I won’t break up with him easily.”
Agnes tried to dissuade her, “Lana, a man like Stephan, you’re not good enough for him. The waters of the wealthy are deep. If you marry him, you’re bound to suffer and be mistreated!”
Agnes was speaking from the heart, offering advice as someone who’d been through it all.
It wasn’t until she married Henry that she realized there were many things she had no control over.
It was as if she were trapped inside, with no way out.
Moreover, as Henry’s wife, her life appeared glamorous on the surface, but in reality, it was a constant struggle.
Everyone around her looked down on her simply because she came from the countryside, she had no status and no connections.
They looked down on her background, so they never showed her any respect.
That was why she didn’t want Alana to end up like her, living every day in such a humiliating and degrading environment.
She would rather Alana marry an ordinary man and lead an ordinary life than get entangled in the world of the wealthy elite.
Alana frowned. “Whether I’m worthy or not has nothing to do with you. Since you’ve already abandoned me, don’t show up now and disrupt my life. Your presence means nothing to me!”
It even made her feel sick!
But she was too well-mannered to utter such venomous words.
Agnes said, “Lana, I’m truly doing this for your own good...”
Alana found it laughable. “Is it truly for my own good, or for your own? Are you willing to lose your dignity just to curry favor with Darla?”
Agnes’ lips trembled. “I...”
For a moment, she was at a loss for words.
Alana stood up. “Alright, I’ve said my piece. I don’t want to say any more. Goodbye.”
After a brief pause, she said coldly, “The coffee is on me... consider it repayment for your kindness in birthing me.”
With that, she turned and walked away without a second glance.
Agnes was left standing there, her expression filled with anguish.
She didn’t know what she had done wrong.
Yet it felt as though she had done everything wrong.
Perhaps she shouldn’t have decided to come find Alana in the first place.
As if a thought had struck her, her fingers trembling, she pulled her phone out of her bag and called Miranda.
Miranda and Joan, had just received the 10 million dollars Agnes had earned from selling jewelry and were splurging at the mall.
Suddenly, they received a call from Agnes, and their hearts skipped a beat in surprise.
People are always extra nervous when they’re doing something wrong.
But she only felt that pang of guilt for a moment before pretending nothing was wrong and answering the call.
She told her daughter, Joan, not to make a sound, then asked,
“Sis, what brings you to call your sister-in-law?”
Agnes cut straight to the point. “Sister-in-law, tell me, since I’ve been away from home for so many years, have you been taking good care of my daughter?”
Miranda hadn’t expected Agnes to ask this out of the blue. Without pausing to think, she immediately recited the same old line she’d used a thousand times.
“Well, how could I possibly treat her badly? I’ve told you before, I treat her like royalty. She lives the high life at my house, living like a princess every day with nothing to worry about!”
Agnes frowned. “I just saw my daughter, Alana. She told me that for the past ten years, she hasn’t been doing well. You haven’t taken good care of her, not only that, but you’ve made her do laundry, cook, and handle all sorts of household chores.”
Miranda’s eyelid twitched. “You actually met her?!”
“Yes, just a moment ago.”
“You... you...” Miranda was so stunned by the news that she was momentarily speechless.
She had assumed Agnes would never have the nerve to face Alana again. As long as Agnes didn’t see Alana, the lies she’d told her would never be discovered.
But she never imagined that Agnes would secretly meet with Alana behind her back.
This truly caught her completely off guard.
