Harem Online: My Party Is Full of Beautiful Celebrities
Chapter 351: Old Blood, New Buyers
Rias’s evidence review confirmed the courier’s classifications and nothing more. By the time they accepted the private invitation, every claim had been labeled as testimony, evidence, or inference. The auction began inside a dining hall with no windows and twelve empty seats at the head table. No one sat there.
Masked bidders occupied smaller tables below, each separated by curtains thin enough to show movement but thick enough to hide faces. The market replaced names with temporary titles.
[Unhoused Collector]
[Lineage Buyer]
[Broken Retainer]
[Beastslayer Procurer]
[Guest Recovery Crew]
Rias remained outside the hall in a contract archive alcove. Her trade mask and movement could still identify her to anyone who had studied Flash Fang’s public footage, so she monitored the party through evidence wards and the private channel instead of entering the social center.
[Flash Fang: Four visible exits. Two are false. The auction room has another route beneath the head table.]
Katherine read the message without moving her eyes from the attendants approaching their table. Elisebeth sat at the far side with her staff disguised as a plain record rod, maintaining a thin Silent Stage around their seats. After the lodge, Alexandra had asked Kumoe whether she was willing to hide again until they needed her. Kumoe had agreed, reluctantly, and returned to her personal subspace. Katherine had dismissed Kinnami as well. They had already exposed enough.
Katherine and Alexandra had refined their cover after the lodge. Katherine slipped into calm authority without changing her posture. Alexandra remained beside her, openly restless, one hand near a sword handle whenever anyone stared too long. Cassandra took Martin’s arm before they entered. The gesture surprised him enough that he looked down at her hand.
"Our cover presents you as contracted protection," she murmured. "Standing alone behind us would make you look available to another patron."
"And holding my arm fixes that?"
"It establishes an existing claim on your service."
Alexandra glanced back. "Only his service?"
A faint flush touched Cassandra’s cheeks beneath the mask. She did not release him. "The market does not need the complete contract."
Katherine hid a smile and guided them to their assigned table. A steward in white gloves presented the first lot.
[Lot One: Three erased bounty records. Origin verified.]
[Lot Two: Condemned equipment repair vouchers.]
[Lot Three: Preserved bond residue. Source record sealed.]
[Lot Four: Migration route archive, intelligent beast classification.]
[Lot Five: High-Density Blue Catalyst, diluted.]
Martin’s attention hardened on the fourth and fifth lots. Cassandra’s fingers tightened once around his arm, reminding him that visible anger would expose what mattered to them.
The bidding remained quiet. No one shouted amounts. Buyers pressed signet rings or market seals to the table, and the highest offer appeared only to the steward. Several rings were worn inward, their crests hidden against gloved palms.
One bidder raised an old silver cup. A winged creature had once formed the handle, but its head and body had been broken off. Only two human hands remained wrapped around empty air.
Katherine leaned toward the steward. "Does lineage verification apply to every restricted lot?"
"Only those involving inherited claim, broken pact compensation, or household grievance."
"And the market verifies the lineage?"
"The market verifies that someone accepted responsibility for the claim."
That answer proved almost nothing. Alexandra exhaled loudly and shifted in her chair. "We came for Beastslayer work, not dead families arguing over cups."
The steward stiffened. Katherine placed two fingers over Alexandra’s wrist. "My partner is more interested in practical value."
"Then your partner should understand that old obligations often determine who may purchase new power."
Alexandra looked at him through her sharp mask. "Old obligations sound more impressive when nobody explains who owes what."
The steward withdrew instead of answering.
[Crimson Halo: He disliked that.]
[Chaosgraphy: He was supposed to.]
[Kill Clause: The fee structure changed when he mentioned inherited claim. Different accounts received the payment. This market may be a network of interests rather than one owner.]
[Flash Fang: Record it as possibility, not conclusion.]
Cassandra’s mouth moved in the smallest acknowledgment. The auction continued.
A preserved vial of live-bond blood appeared beneath six layers of glass. The blood still carried a weak living rhythm. Within seconds, three separate bidder seals lit beneath different curtains, each opening an offer window for the same lot.
One carried the title [Lineage Buyer]. Another was [Beastslayer Procurer]. The third had no title beyond [Protected Guest]. The steward announced the lot without naming its source.
"Suitable for maximum-bond recognition research, Beastslayer advancement, or hereditary pact restoration."
Rias copied the final phrase from outside: hereditary pact restoration.
A veiled bidder two tables away spoke first. "Restoration is a generous word. The beasts accepted our roads, protection, food, and soldiers for generations. When they withdrew, they called it freedom."
Someone behind the opposite curtain laughed without humor. "Perhaps they withdrew because your ancestors stopped asking."
"You speak as though agreements can survive when one side may abandon them at will."
"An agreement that cannot be left is ownership."
The hall went quiet. No one turned far enough to expose a face, and neither side showed a crest. Rias recorded the disagreement, but there was still no way to tell whom either bidder represented.
Katherine let the silence stretch before addressing the steward. "Does the market care which interpretation is correct?"
"The market cares whether a contract can be enforced."
"Then the market sells consequences, not truth."
The steward’s masked gaze stayed on her for several seconds. "That distinction has value."
Alexandra leaned closer to Martin. "He likes her."
"He likes the cover," Martin whispered.
"Still counts."
Cassandra’s hand moved higher on his arm. The next lot was harmless by comparison, a crate of old route tokens with every active enchantment removed. Katherine purchased it for a low price so their crew would not attend a restricted auction without bidding on anything.
The crate arrived beneath their table. A masked bidder near the rear turned when Martin shifted his left arm beneath the coat, adjusting the hidden weight of Breakwater Aegis.
"That guard," the bidder murmured to someone behind the curtain. "I’ve seen that stance somewhere."
The reply came too quietly for Silent Stage to catch. Martin kept his eyes on the auction and did not react, but Rias marked the exchange from outside. The glance did not expose them outright, but Rias marked it as the first real crack in their cover.
The auction’s final listing appeared above the empty head table.
[Private Sponsorship Opportunity]
[Fund one Beastslayer Candidate.]
[Candidate unaffiliated with Just Die.]
[Lineage patrons receive priority observation access.]
[Other guests may register commercial interest.]
The room’s quiet attention sharpened. Several bidders who had ignored the previous lots opened private offer windows. The Beastslayer Procurer registered immediately. So did both people who had argued about old obligations.
Cassandra studied the payment structure. "More than one anonymous account is funding the candidate."
"Can we register without paying?" Martin asked.
Katherine read the conditions. "Commercial interest grants observation access if the candidate’s sponsor approves. No investment required until after the demonstration."
Alexandra looked toward her. "Do it."
Katherine registered the Recovery crew as potential buyers of recovered Beastslayer materials. The market accepted.
[Observation Request submitted.]
[Guest Recovery Crew service profile under review.]
While they waited, a second steward approached Martin directly.
"Is your shield contract exclusive?"
Martin stared at him, but Katherine answered before he could. "His protection is not available."
Alexandra’s smile sharpened in a way that made the broader answer obvious without her saying it. Cassandra simply kept her hand on Martin’s arm and watched the steward until he decided there were easier contracts elsewhere.
Martin looked at the three women. "I thought we were trying to appear subtle."
"We were consistent," Katherine said.
A private window opened above their table.
[Observation Request accepted.]
[Demonstration route available.]
[Candidate status: Maximum-bond recognition pending.]
[Living bond component prepared.]
The last line killed the humor at the table.
