Harem Online: My Party Is Full of Beautiful Celebrities
Chapter 336: The Route That Turned Around
The note beneath the city rose through the open gate.
It entered the plaza through Martin’s boots first. The stone quivered, the hanging bells swayed without being struck, and every Sairren above them spread their wings at once.
Mireva spun toward the gate. "Back from the balconies. Clear the lower lanes."
Her order traveled upward in clipped chirps. The wardens moved immediately, guiding unarmed Sairren through doors and across the suspended bridges. The red markers above them remained, but none of Martin’s party raised a weapon in their direction.
Something scraped against the other side of the gate.
The first creature dragged itself into the plaza on six black limbs. Bronze rings surrounded its long throat, each one vibrating as its jaw opened. Silver resonance clung to its Dark Force core, but the pattern had been wound backward until it resembled a knot.
[Ringing Maw (Monster) Lv. 60]
Two Muteclaw Stalkers slipped through behind it.
The nearest bell sent a false trail across the western passage. The Stalkers ignored it. Their empty faces turned toward a Sairren bellkeeper retreating along the eastern stairs.
"They can see us," Mireva said.
The Ringing Maw lunged past her toward the bellkeeper on the eastern stairs.
Martin caught it on Breakwater Aegis before it reached the stairs. The impact sent his boots skidding over the plaza stones. Stand Against the Current built through his shield and stopped him before the monster could push him back.
"Do you want our help?" Martin asked.
Mireva stared at him across the shield.
Another pulse traveled up from below.
"Fight the monsters," she said. "Touch one of my people with a weapon, claw, or spell, and there will be no second warning."
"Everyone heard her," Martin called.
"Including the loud one," Alexandra said.
Elisebeth lifted both hands. "I heard her perfectly."
Her answer crossed the plaza and returned from three bells.
Mireva’s ears flattened.
Elisebeth lowered her voice. "Sorry."
The curious head of Kumoe barked as if apologizing on her behalf. The right head gave Elisebeth a look that carried less sympathy.
The Ringing Maw struck again. Martin met the blow, turned its jaw away from the eastern stairs, and drew Rainwarden Sword. Measured Answer sharpened the counter that followed his guard. The blade slipped between two throat rings before the monster could recoil.
The creature’s next note poured through the opened gap. It did not strike Martin like ordinary sound. The pressure caught the silver trail across the plaza and pulled it out of shape, making the route toward the shelter shine brighter.
Several wardens above shifted toward that false path before Mireva snapped out a warning call. They corrected themselves immediately, but the hesitation showed Martin why one reversed bell could threaten an entire district. The monsters did not need to command the Sairren. They only needed to make every trusted direction unreliable.
He did not cut blindly through the silver resonance. Cassandra had already warned them that the outer layer belonged to something living.
"Black knot beneath the third ring," Cassandra called. "The silver pattern is wrapped around it, not part of it."
Kill Clause remained near the rear of the formation, where her Level 44 armor and bow belonged in a Level 60 dungeon. She reached full draw while Martin held the Ringing Maw still.
Patient Draw brightened along the Nightglass Longbow.
Her arrow entered through the gap made by Rainwarden Sword and struck the black knot without touching the silver ring around it. The monster convulsed.
Elisebeth folded Fireball and Arcane Bolt together.
Fire Bolt passed through the same opening and burned the Dark Force core from within.
The Ringing Maw collapsed against Martin’s shield.
Across the plaza, one Muteclaw climbed the eastern stairs after the retreating bellkeeper. Rias reached it first. She cut through its rear joint with Gloamneedle, dropped beneath its twisting body, and drove the same blade into the darkness beneath its ribs.
Alexandra and Kumoe intercepted the other.
The curious head seized the monster’s forelimb. The right tracked its attempt to turn, while the middle sent a quick wash of restoration over the shallow line its claw left across Alexandra’s side. Alexandra crossed her swords through the exposed core, and both blades came free before Kumoe released the empty shell.
Angel guarded the broad passage leading toward the civilians. Her crystal shell filled most of the avenue, leaving no space for another monster to slip past her. Katherine stood behind her with her tome open while Kinnami moved between the fighters, renewing barriers wherever the bronze-ringed attacks had cracked them.
A second pulse from below loosened stone above Katherine. Kinnami darted upward and spread a golden barrier over her before the debris fell. Katherine redirected the same protection across Rias and Cassandra, giving both ranged fighters time to hold their positions instead of scattering toward the Sairren paths.
The last Stalker dissolved beneath Gloamneedle.
For several breaths, only the bells moved.
The Sairren wardens kept their weapons raised. Mireva looked from the remains of the monsters to Cassandra.
"You saw our resonance around their hunger."
"I saw a living pattern giving the core a direction," Cassandra said. "The Hollow Resonator carried the same layer outside the dungeon. Your bells taught its hunger where to turn."
"They carried our route-song beyond the doors," Mireva said. "Then something brought the song back wrong."
Cassandra’s quest window opened.
[The Unanswered Bell completed.]
[You traced the foreign resonance wrapped around a Dark Force monster core.]
[You determined what taught its hunger where to turn.]
[Hidden Progression Path Advanced: Hunter of the Dark Force]
[Path Sense Acquired: Hungerline]
[Hungerline reveals the direction imposed upon a monster’s Dark Force hunger. It does not identify intelligent beasts as enemies or remove corruption.]
[New Path Quest: The Bell That Learned to Lie]
[Trace the inversion corrupting the Sairren route-song.]
[Sever the stolen pattern without destroying the original resonance network.]
Cassandra shared every notice with the party before closing anything.
Alexandra read them without softening. "Useful. It doesn’t change the other conditions."
"I know," Cassandra said.
Mireva’s gaze passed between them. She did not ask what those conditions were.
A system notice appeared before all six players.
[Alternative Dungeon Route Discovered: Aid the Belfry Wardens.]
[The Sunken Belfry recognizes your refusal to attack its intelligent inhabitants.]
[Restore the Upper Belfry’s failing route-song.]
The red markers above the Sairren remained. The alternative route had recognized the party’s choice, but that did not mean they had earned the wardens’ trust.
That distinction mattered to Martin. One battle did not entitle them to the city, its secrets, or the people they had protected. Mireva’s wardens had watched them keep their promise, but several still held arrows against their strings, ready to act if the next fight went differently.
Mireva finally lowered her spear by a few inches. "Three relay bells carry our protection across the upper city. One has fallen silent. Another turns without warning. The last still hides our shelters, but it cannot hold alone."
Martin stored Rainwarden Sword without dismissing his shield. "Show us the first one."
Before Mireva could answer, silver light raced from the nearest bell and spread across the floor. It formed a clear route through the eastern avenue, then curved toward the doors through which the civilians had escaped.
Mireva’s face changed.
"That route should lead away from them."
Cassandra activated Hungerline.
Every remaining stain in the plaza pulled in the same direction.
Straight toward the Sairren shelter.
