Gun of Ashes

Chapter 1394: Epilogue 2

Sighing deeply, Rod stared at the hospital ceiling, trying hard to organize his memories.

He recalled participating in a secret activity to meet a visitor from Jiuxia at a covert military port. That visitor from Jiuxia was… what was it again?

Rod couldn’t remember clearly, but then his memory shifted to the arrival of the Jiuxia Mission. As a translation officer, he led them around, and then encountered that rare violent storm.

The storm was fiercer than last year’s, even stirring up the Thames River. It surged onto the streets and infiltrated underground, causing aged pipelines to shatter, leading to further disaster.

In Rod’s memory, things happened like this: he was hit on the head by falling rubble while sheltering the Jiuxia guests, passed out, and upon waking, found himself in the hospital.

Looking across at other beds, everyone had the same confused expression as Rod. They chatted idly over the past few days and compared their testimonies, but no new findings emerged. That storm seemed to have poured into their minds, diluting and blurring all memories.

“Ah…”

Rod sighed again. He rarely focused on such pointless details, seeking out his own memories, but he had a vague feeling he had forgotten something, something very important.

Climbing out of his bed, he walked toward the corridor. Rod felt as though he was being semi-confined in the hospital. After some days of resistance, the nurses finally made a concession, allowing him daily strolls.

Walking into the small garden, hiding for a while under the shade of a tree, he walked further until he saw a sea of pure white.

Countless white flowers swayed, stretching together, covering the soil.

Curiously, Rod walked over, standing by the flower sea. A breeze picked up, pushing away the white flowers to reveal the tombstone beneath, causing Rod’s heart to chill.

Then more flowers dispersed, revealing tombstone after tombstone, each anonymous.

This was a graveyard, and then Rod remembered it was the anonymous graveyard within Black Mountain Hospital, where Purification Mechanism frequently held burial ceremonies, though the deceased usually had no names.

Accidentally entering here made Rod feel a wave of panic as he saw some tombstones that appeared very new, as if just erected days ago.

Were they victims of the storm?

Rod thought, gradually calming down inside before another person approached.

A woman stood at a tombstone, placing down a bouquet of pale blue flowers, standing out in the white sea so clearly that Rod looked over, his gaze momentarily entranced.

“Hmm?”

The woman looked over, perhaps seeing Rod’s slightly amusing expression; she wore a faint smile on her face.

“A Jiuxia person?”

Rod glanced at the woman, unable to hold back from asking.

The woman felt very familiar to him, though he couldn’t recall where from. Following the storm, his memories over the past month were chaotic, making him suspect the rubble had indeed damaged his head.

In the Jiuxia Mission, there wasn’t a visitor like this, or was there more to the Mission than what he had witnessed?

The woman’s smile grew deeper, and she slowly spoke.

“As expected.”

Rod sensed another meaning in her words, asking.

“Do you know me?”

The woman maintained her smile, neither affirming nor denying.

This unfortunate soul, Rod, had no resistance to the Anti-Meme, forgetting far more than anticipated. With Watson’s interference, he seemed to have spent a month entirely different from Shao Liangxi’s expectations.

Shao Liangxi glanced at the silent graveyard. Like Rod, she too had forgotten something, but unlike Rod, she didn’t forget as much. She remembered Rod, but simply didn’t recall the day the storm came.

As Anonymous, she understood why. Her memory had been erased. Shao Liangxi didn’t panic, having experienced such occurrences frequently as Anonymous. This time she could still realize she had forgotten; sometimes she couldn’t notice such scenarios.

The atmosphere sank into silence; neither wished to disturb it, as if mourning those souls forgotten by people.

After a long time, Rod suppressed his curiosity about this mysterious foreigner, but then he saw the blue flowers she placed down. The flowers seemed to carry magic power, simply looking at them brought a sense of peace.

“What are these flowers?” Rod asked.

“Forget-me-not.”

“Oh…”

Rod appeared very uneasy, remaining silent for a while before finally gathering courage to pursue the mysterious unknown within his mind. Yet as he began to speak, he heard the woman say.

“Shao Liangxi, my name is Shao Liangxi, Rod.”

“Oh…”

Just as a volcano was about to erupt, it was blocked, though achieving the purpose, Rod still felt strange. Amid his confusion, Rod suddenly recalled Shao Liangxi saying his name.

“You do know me after all!”

Rod shouted, being answered by a burst of laughter, like a mouse being teased.

Laughing, Shao Liangxi rubbed her eyes hard and then exhaled deeply. She had indeed forgotten something, possibly an immensely terrible nightmare, but within her heart was another voice, guessing someone would remember… just not her.

“No one will be completely forgotten…”
