Chapter 218 - 30: Recruitment
The next morning, Jiang Ran went to Teacher Yan’s office and told him about Old Tian’s situation.
Yan Chonghan nodded.
"Jiang Ran, I understand. To be honest, if Old Tian is truly willing to let his daughter volunteer for the experiment, we would of course welcome it. We would also provide full financial support."
"However... I’m concerned you might not have explained everything clearly to him, especially the side effects, drawbacks, and potential consequences of the experiment."
"Of course, I’m not blaming you. After all, you’re just a kind-hearted intermediary. That’s why I think I need to speak with Old Tian personally to explain things in greater, more specific detail."
"No problem."
Jiang Ran picked up his phone and made a call.
"I’ll have Old Tian come over here right now."
After giving Old Tian the directions to the office, Jiang Ran hung up.
Afterward, he felt a little uneasy and looked at Yan Chonghan.
"Teacher Yan, do you think the success rate for this kind of experiment is high? Have you really never done a single human trial before?"
After hearing this, Yan Chonghan gave a meaningful smile.
"Jiang Ran, you need to understand that as scientific researchers, we have principles and ethics."
"A lot of movies like to feature mad scientists. You know, the kind who secretly conduct illegal and unethical human experiments just to make a breakthrough."
"But in reality... just think about it. What’s the purpose of our research? At its core, this technology is meant to save people. To save lives."
"So if achieving a technology meant to *save lives* requires us to first *harm and kill people* through illegal human experiments, wouldn’t that be putting the cart before the horse?"
"We are always in great need of volunteers for our experiments, but it’s an absolute prerequisite that they participate willingly, and only after being fully informed of the risks."
"So, you can rest assured about that. I will explain everything to Old Tian in full. If you’re still worried, you’re welcome to sit in. In fact... I’d prefer it if you were there to listen and add anything necessary."
A little over ten minutes later, Old Tian arrived at Yan Chonghan’s office.
After a brief exchange of pleasantries, Yan Chonghan began to formally introduce the project. He was, indeed, a man of great principle. He explained everything in detail, dedicating a full 80% of the conversation to the dangers, drawbacks, and potentially fatal consequences of the experiment.
As expected, Old Tian’s face was clouded with worry after hearing the explanation, his expression wavering.
"I’m sorry, I need... to think about this some more."
"That’s absolutely no problem."
Yan Chonghan assured him:
"Please, take your time to think it over and weigh your options. Of course, you’ll also need to consider your daughter’s specific condition and consult her attending physician about her current status."
Then, he took out a sticky note, wrote down his phone number, and handed it to him.
"This is my number. If there’s anything you want to know or need to ask about, you can contact me anytime."
"This applies to your daughter’s condition, too. I know many world-renowned experts. If you can get me her medical records, I can send them over for them to take a look."
And just like that, Old Tian and Teacher Yan were officially in contact.
Jiang Ran’s task was complete. He left the office.
Today, there was another big event to take care of, and that was—
Club Recruitment Day!
The freshmen’s military training was finally over. The day all the club leaders had been waiting for had finally arrived. For the entire day, every club was allowed to set up a recruitment booth in a designated area to promote themselves and sign up new members.
Chi Xiaoguo had been enthusiastically preparing for ages, just waiting for today to absolutely kill it.
Jiang Ran had promised Chi Xiaoguo last semester that he’d help her with recruitment. So, after leaving Teacher Yan’s office, he made a beeline for the club activities building.
"Senior! You’re here!"
The moment he pushed open the door to the Film Club’s activity room, Chi Xiaoguo shot to her feet excitedly.
"Look, look! I’ve got everything sorted and organized! The giveaways are all here! I wonder if fifty will be enough!"
Jiang Ran looked at the coffee table.
Sure enough, the table was covered with carefully prepared little toys and gifts, most of them related to film cameras, rolls of film, and picture frames.
Chi Xiaoguo had even thoughtfully designed a raffle box, so every student who submitted an application could draw for a prize.
"No one goes home empty-handed~ No one goes home empty-handed~"
Chi Xiaoguo planted her hands on her hips, victory already in her grasp.
"The requirements to join our Film Club are super strict! So we can’t guarantee every applicant will get in. We still have to give out consolation prizes."
"Alright, no time to waste! Senior, let’s hurry and move the table and display boards outside!"
The designated area for booths was right outside the Film Club’s window. Jiang Ran and Chi Xiaoguo made a few trips back and forth, finally managing to move all their materials outside.
A table, two chairs, and two display boards made up the main components of their recruitment setup.
The two display boards were designed with incredible care, both handmade by Chi Xiaoguo herself.
One board introduced the Film Club’s history and the unique charm of film photography.
The other board showcased award-winning photos from past members of the Film Club.
On the long table, they also set out several vintage cameras for the freshmen to admire and handle.
"Is my camera not here?"
Jiang Ran glanced over the tabletop but didn’t see the behemoth that Nan Xiuxiu had given him.
’It would be impossible to miss.’
The Fuji camera Nan Xiuxiu had given him was far larger and heavier than any ordinary film camera; placed on a shelf, it was an absolute monster that towered over everything else.
