Chapter 151: Chapter 151 – The First Step Beyond

The peaceful routine at the academy lasted for several days. Azrael and Seraphina continued their normal classes, trained with their friends, and spent part of each evening refining their control over Genesis and Oblivion. The eastern expedition remained a topic of discussion among the researchers, but no new discoveries had been made since their return, and Orion had deliberately kept the twins from becoming involved in every new report.

That changed on the fifth morning.

Azrael was practicing with Astraeus when he noticed something unusual. It wasn’t the distant pulse they had encountered in the eastern territory, nor was it the resonance of an ancient formation. This sensation was much closer and far weaker, almost as if something within the academy itself had shifted.

He lowered his sword and closed his eyes.

Seraphina, who had been practicing nearby, noticed immediately. "What is it?"

"I’m not sure."

She walked closer and focused on her own perception. A few seconds later, she felt it as well.

"There."

Azrael opened his eyes.

The sensation had already disappeared.

Neither of them moved.

They had learned enough from the eastern expedition to know that immediately chasing every strange fluctuation was a bad habit. Instead, they returned to the academy building and informed Orion.

The Headmaster listened without interrupting.

"Did it feel like the eastern network?" he asked.

Azrael shook his head. "Not exactly. The resonance was much weaker, and it didn’t travel through the ground."

Seraphina added, "It felt more like it passed through the academy’s energy."

Orion frowned.

"Then we’ll investigate the academy itself before assuming it’s connected to the eastern network."

That decision led them beneath the oldest section of the academy later that afternoon.

The lower archives had rarely been opened to students. They contained old construction records, damaged magical diagrams, abandoned training manuals, and historical documents that had survived several generations of rebuilding. Orion brought only the twins and two senior researchers, choosing to keep the investigation small until they knew what they were dealing with.

They eventually reached a corridor beneath the oldest training hall.

One researcher examined the wall.

"This section is much older than the academy above it."

Orion nodded. "The academy was built over an older foundation. Most of the original structure was destroyed or rebuilt centuries ago."

Azrael placed his hand against the stone.

The resonance was faint, but he could feel something beneath it.

"This isn’t part of the eastern network."

Seraphina touched the wall beside him.

"But it has the same principle."

The researcher immediately became interested.

"What do you mean?"

Seraphina closed her eyes.

"I can feel traces of Genesis."

Azrael studied the stone.

"And Oblivion."

The researcher stared at them.

"Here?"

Azrael nodded.

"But the traces are extremely old."

They continued deeper into the corridor until they reached a circular chamber hidden behind a collapsed section of stone. Unlike the structures in the eastern territory, there were no giant formations or elaborate carvings. The room was remarkably simple, containing only a circular platform in the center and seven narrow grooves running from it toward the walls.

Orion examined the platform.

"Seven pathways."

Azrael stepped closer.

"Yes, but they’re incomplete."

Seraphina looked at the grooves.

"The network here was disconnected."

One of the researchers carefully inspected the surrounding walls. "Could this be another part of the Seven Thrones system?"

"Possibly," Orion said. "But we shouldn’t assume that yet."

Azrael studied the center of the platform.

There was no golden marking.

No black marking.

No colorless symbol.

Instead, the center was completely empty.

He immediately understood why.

"This wasn’t a functioning node."

Seraphina looked at him.

"It was connected to something."

"Or someone."

The researcher frowned. "How can you tell?"

Azrael didn’t answer immediately. He could feel the resonance in the stone, but unlike the eastern formations, it didn’t feel like a machine waiting to be activated. It felt like the remains of something that had once been used and then deliberately disconnected.

He finally said, "Someone removed the connection."

Orion’s expression became serious.

"Can you restore it?"

Azrael shook his head.

"Not safely."

Seraphina agreed. "And we shouldn’t try."

The decision was made immediately.

They would document the chamber but leave it untouched.

The researchers began recording measurements while Orion examined the old construction around them. Azrael remained near the center of the platform, studying its resonance without attempting to activate it.

After several minutes, Seraphina approached him.

"You’re still looking at it."

"I’m trying to understand why it feels familiar."

"Because of the eastern network?"

"No."

Azrael looked at the empty center.

"Because it feels like a place where something was deliberately left out."

Seraphina considered that.

"Choice?"

"Maybe."

She looked at the platform again.

"Or the person who made the choice."

Azrael nodded.

Neither of them tried to force an answer.

The discovery was reported to Orion’s senior staff that evening.

The academy’s historians searched through old construction records while researchers compared the chamber’s measurements with the eastern formations. Nothing provided a definitive explanation, but several old documents mentioned an earlier structure beneath the academy that had been sealed after an unknown magical incident.

The records were incomplete.

However, one detail was consistent.

The chamber had been sealed intentionally.

Orion made the decision to leave it sealed.

"We already have enough evidence that the ancient network extended farther than we originally believed," he told the twins. "We don’t need to open every door simply because we found one."

Azrael agreed.

Seraphina smiled. "You’re becoming cautious."

Orion laughed quietly.

"I’m becoming experienced."

That ended the investigation for the day.

The next morning, Azrael and Seraphina returned to the training field.

The discovery beneath the academy had given them another reason to think about their powers, but neither wanted to spend their time chasing ancient structures. They had spent enough time learning that knowledge gained through observation was often more valuable than knowledge gained by forcing something open.

Instead, they trained.

Azrael practiced with Astraeus while deliberately limiting the amount of Oblivion he used. He focused on swordsmanship, movement, and resonance, allowing the blade to guide his reactions rather than relying on raw power.

Seraphina practiced alongside him, using Genesis to alter the terrain gradually. She encouraged roots beneath the training field to strengthen naturally, allowing them to create small changes in the environment without forcing them into unnatural shapes.

Eventually, their training overlapped.

Azrael cut through a damaged stone target while Seraphina redirected the surviving roots around it. His Oblivion removed the weakened material, while her Genesis preserved the living structure that remained.

Neither interfered with the other.

The result was clean and controlled.

Seraphina looked at the finished work.

"We’re getting better."

Azrael nodded.

"Because we’re finally learning when not to use our full strength."

She smiled.

"That might be the hardest lesson."

Azrael looked toward Astraeus.

"For us, probably."

They continued training until the afternoon.

For the first time, the strange chamber beneath the academy didn’t feel like something demanding their attention. It was simply another piece of the world they had discovered, something that could wait until they had a reason to return.

Their strength was growing.

Their understanding was growing with it.

And for the moment, that was the direction that mattered most.
