Gene Fusion System: Crime Hunter
Chapter 1296 - 642: More Revealed Than Concealed? Mutual Probing
Watching the older sister clutch her head and sob, her face was full of panic and unease.
She was on the verge of a complete breakdown.
Luo Fei had no choice but to hurry over to comfort her.
"Big Sis, none of us wanted to see something like this happen."
"I also hope you can calm down for now and cooperate with our investigation."
After a while, Luo Fei and Li Yu brought the older sister to their destination.
She was still in a daze, completely lost.
Not far away, a man was staring woodenly at the person lying in a pool of blood.
His hands were also handcuffed.
"Old Liu, are you crazy? How could you do something like this?"
At that moment,
the older sister was truly stunned beyond words.
She never imagined her husband would act so impulsively.
But as he watched his wife run over, her face full of disbelief as she looked at him,
the husband coldly asked,
"Wife, tell me the truth."
"Is my son really my own flesh and blood?"
Hearing her husband suddenly ask that,
the wife’s whole body jolted.
"No... honey, why are you suddenly asking this?"
He could see she was a bit baffled,
as if she hadn’t expected him to bring this up out of nowhere.
The husband kept a straight face,
speaking word by word.
"Tell me, is he or isn’t he?"
Seeing her husband lift his eyes, his face grave as he fixed them on her,
the wife also took a deep breath.
"Old Liu, you must be drunk, right? If your son isn’t yours, whose could he be?"
He could tell she was a bit shocked.
The man was silent for a moment before finally speaking.
"If that’s the case, then I really killed the wrong person. I deserve to be arrested."
"But I demand that you get a paternity test for my son. If he’s not mine by blood, then I’m divorcing you."
Seeing her husband, having killed someone, still trying to pin the blame on her,
the woman’s anger flared, and her face flushed red.
"Fine, then we’ll divorce!"
With that, the woman couldn’t help but break down crying.
Her emotions were clearly out of control.
For the moment, there was no way to get anything useful out of her.
Luo Fei turned his gaze to the husband, Liu Gensheng.
"Sir, what’s your relationship with the deceased? What grudges were between you?"
Luo Fei looked at him expectantly.
The other man hesitated for a moment, then said earnestly,
"Officer, he got drunk earlier."
"Then he told me my son wasn’t mine, but his. So I got furious, and in a fit of rage, I beat him to death."
As the man spoke, he glanced at the wine bottle not far away that had been sealed in an evidence bag.
Hearing this kind of reason,
Luo Fei was taken aback.
"Sir, are you serious? You’re not joking?"
In that instant,
Luo Fei was genuinely dumbfounded.
He hadn’t expected someone to kill over a single sentence.
All the more since, given the victim’s special status, he was inclined to believe there was some other motive behind all this, rather than just that.
Noticing his surprise,
the man neither confirmed nor denied it with any extra comment.
"It’s true. If he’d just said it once as a joke, I could let it go. But he keeps saying it, again and again. That makes it impossible for me not to wonder if he’s doing it on purpose—or if it might simply be the truth."
Liu Gensheng was visibly agitated, his face flushed red.
He shook his head helplessly.
His wife, Chen Meili, was utterly shocked.
"Liu Gensheng, are you insane? Don’t you know what kind of person I am?"
"I’ve been with you for over ten years, and this is how you treat me?"
At that moment,
Chen Meili was truly stunned.
Her face was written all over with disbelief.
Liu Gensheng didn’t dare look at his wife’s face.
Meanwhile, a few coworkers standing off to the side chimed in.
"Officer, Old Liu’s temper has always been nasty."
"Before this, that guy named Bai kept teasing him, saying he was actually Old Liu’s son’s real father, and that he and Old Liu’s boy looked a lot alike. That’s why the tension between them had been building for a long time."
After the others explained,
Luo Fei finally learned
that the deceased was named Bai Jingye.
Forty-four years old this year.
He’d been a very experienced foreman.
But because of his bad temper and arrogant manner, relying on his seniority, he barked orders at the men under him. He was always throwing his weight around at the site.
Anyone who didn’t give him cigarettes or bring him alcohol would end up being targeted by him.
This had given Bai Jingye a terrible reputation.
Yet since he was the boss, whether others got bonuses or performance pay was all up to him.
So everyone could only swallow their anger and keep quiet.
"Officer, what Liu Bro did is definitely over the line. He shouldn’t have killed anyone. But that Bai Jingye really had it coming. He’s the kind of guy with zero real ability, but he’s smoothed out the hierarchy so well it works entirely in his favor! Whenever he talks to the higher-ups, he’s always respectful, never raises his voice. But with us workers, he’s a completely different person."
Listening to everyone’s comments,
it was obvious they’d long ago had it up to here with the situation, and they held Bai Jingye in utter contempt.
Luo Fei nodded.
"Everyone, I’ve got a general picture now. Thank you for providing clues."
Still, even though the killing itself was confirmed,
and Bai Jingye had clearly pissed off a lot of people at the site, giving many of them potential motives to kill,
Luo Fei still believed there might be more to this case than met the eye.
And to facilitate continuing the investigation into Shen Liufeng,
Luo Fei decided to head straight to Bai Jingye’s home.
After a short while,
once Luo Fei arrived at Bai Jingye’s place,
he discovered that Shen Yueling had somehow already been there waiting for some time.
