Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Volcanic Ash Fields

As Squad 07 stepped through the shimmering blue portal, the cool mountain air of Floor 2 instantly evaporated, replaced by a blast of dry, stifling heat. The portal closed behind them, marooning the party atop an elevated basalt outcrop looking out over a vast, terrifying landscape.

[Floor 3 Entered: Volcanic Ash Fields & Lava Tubes]

Before them lay a shattered expanse of dark basalt rock, jagged obsidian spire formations, and winding underground lava tunnels. The sky above glowed a deep, bruised crimson, churning with thick clouds of volcanic ash that drizzled fine grey soot across the ground.

The environment of Floor 3 was structured into Three Concentric Rings, each progressively escalating in environmental hazard:

The Outer Ring — The Basalt Flats (~35°C):

Environment: Hot, dry, and uncomfortable, but easily manageable for trained Awakeners. Fine ash drifts across black stone plains interspersed with low sulfur vents.

Hazards: Reduced long-range visibility from ash plumes and occasional heat haze distortion.

The Middle Ring — The Ash Ridges & Lava Tunnels (~40°C):

Environment: Unmistakably oppressive heat. The basalt ground is crisscrossed with glowing red magma veins, and narrow, claustrophobic underground lava tubes dominate the terrain.

Hazards: Constant stamina drain, sulfur gas bursts that apply minor poison/suffocation debuffs, and tight, heat-hazardous corridors that force CQC (close-quarters combat).

The Inner Ring — The Infernal Caldera (~55°C):

Environment: Extreme, scorching heat that cooks the air. Rivers of molten rock flow freely around the central Floor Boss chamber, causing air to shimmer violently.

Hazards: Continuous fire damage over time without passive thermal protection or specialized alchemical resistance, melting non-reinforced gear over extended contact.

Barney wiped a line of sweat from his forehead as he took a breath of the heavy, sulfur-tinged Outer Ring air. "Man... it’s already around 35 degrees out here in the open, and we’re just on the edge. How hot is it going to get deeper in?"

Seraphina adjusted the Crucible of Eternal Transmutation on her belt, her eyes narrowing as she looked toward the glowing orange glow of the Middle Ring. "My thermal reading formulas project 40 degrees in the middle tunnel networks, and upwards of 55 degrees near the central caldera. Without cooling potions or natural environmental resistance, standard gear will degrade fast."

Rowan adjusted his Enchanted Straw Hat, resting the Hoe of the World-Tiller against his shoulder. His awakened Prime Human bloodline flared softly within him, granting him natural status effect resistance that kept the oppressive Outer Ring heat from bothering him in the slightest.

"Then we make our preparations here in the Outer Ring before we push into the lava tubes," Rowan said quietly, his eyes glowing with a faint golden sheen as he looked across the ash fields.

***

Squad 07 fanned out across the scorched basalt flats, their boots crunching over warm, glass-like slag. The 35°C heat vibrated off the obsidian outcroppings, carrying the sharp, acrid reek of brimstone.

"We’ve got movement," Mirei warned quietly, her Breeze-Striker Longbow already drawn. She pointed toward a cluster of smoking sulfur vents twenty meters ahead.

The dark ash beneath the vents churned. Three massive, armadillo-like creatures clawed their way out of the earth. Their backs were covered in jagged plates of cooling magma rock that glowed with inner heat, and their eyes burned like hot embers.

"Level 6 Magma Beetles," Caelen said, his fingers resting on the hilt of the Edge of the First Warden. "Their shell plates look heavy."

"Let’s see how they handle a real defense," Barney grinned, stepping to the front lines. He slammed the Aegis of the Sunken Bastion into the basalt ground.

[Skill Activated: Bastion Wall]

A translucent, crimson-tinted barrier erupted from his shield, locking into the bedrock just as the lead beetle rolled itself into a molten bowling ball and charged. The creature slammed into Barney’s barrier with a loud CRACK, but the heavy shield didn’t give an inch. The glowing runes along the obsidian face flared, repelling the kinetic force and leaving the beetle dazed.

"Mirei, eyes!" Rowan commanded.

Mirei released a single arrow. Thanks to her new relic, the shaft glided silently through the air with zero wind resistance, piercing the tiny gap between the beetle’s headplate and shoulder joint.

[Critical Hit! -1,200 HP]

The second beetle unleashed a sudden burst of pressurized, superheated ash from its dorsal vents, aiming straight for Seraphina.

Before the scalding cloud could hit, Seraphina unclipped a vial from her belt and hurled it into the air.

[Skill Activated: Transmuted Splash — Frost-Mist Powder]

The glass shattered mid-air. Enhanced by her Crucible of Eternal Transmutation, the potion exploded into a dense wave of sub-zero blue mist. The superheated ash vanished instantly, flash-cooling the second beetle’s glowing armor into brittle, cracked stone.

"Caelen, break the shell!" Seraphina called out.

Caelen blurred forward, executing a precise spatial dash. The Edge of the First Warden hummed with a sharp, distorted ringing sound as he delivered a spatial slice straight across the creature’s weakened back. The spatial mana bypassed the brittle physical armor entirely, slicing through the core and causing the second beetle to collapse into ash.

The third beetle hissed, raising its heavy stone claws to smash the ground.

Rowan stepped past Barney, adjusting his Enchanted Straw Hat with his left hand while lifting the Hoe of the World-Tiller with his right.

[Skill Activated: Earthbreaker Plough - Celestial Furrow]

Rowan didn’t just strike the ground—he commanded the volcanic earth. The basalt floor beneath the final beetle violently split open, turning the dense rock into a churning pit of soft, mana-drained soil. The creature sank up to its chest, its legs trapped instantly in the furrows.

Rowan swung the heavy ironwood shaft in a clean, smooth arc. Driven by the raw, unyielding power of his awakened Prime Human bloodline, the hoe struck the beetle’s headplate with terrifying weight.

BOOM!

A shockwave of golden earth mana shattered the heavy magma shell into fragments. The last Magma Beetle disintegrated into shimmering experience particles, leaving behind three glowing red core stones on the dark ground.

Barney unclasped his shield, staring at the shattered basalt floor in awe. "Man, your physical output after that trial is insane, Rowan. You barely put any mana into that swing!"

"The bloodline change makes every movement feel effortless," Rowan replied with a calm smile, resting the hoe back over his shoulder. He picked up one of the warm core stones and tossed it to Seraphina. "Good harvest. Core materials are intact."

Seraphina caught the stone, inspecting its heat-resistant properties. "These will work perfectly as base ingredients for the higher-grade heat resistance elixirs we’ll need for the Middle and Inner Rings."

"Good warm-up," Caelen said, sheathing his blade. "The Outer Ring isn’t going to pose much of a threat to us now. Let me scout ahead toward the entrance of the Lava Tubes."
