Chapter 44: Chapter 44: Joint Mission

Reassembling in the administrative hall, the five members of Squad 07 walked back up to the central consultation desk. Professor Aaron looked up from his terminal, a warm smile touching his lips as he tapped their Sol-Aethel passes on the ledger pad. Five green verification checks flashed across his screen.

"Flawless execution across the board," Professor Aaron praised, his eyes hovering over the metrics. "Vance harvested double the expected yield from Block 04 with zero crop waste. Ironforge brought five sets of chipped E-Grade armor back to peak durability. Miss Vane’s potion purity hit ninety-eight percent. And the Thorne twins cleared the heavy-density combat course with perfect coordination."

He cleared the solo ledger and pulled up a live tactical map of Layer 1’s Eastern Outskirts—a transitional border zone where reclaimed stone paved roads met untamed, corrupted wilderness.

"Now that your mana circuits are tuned to the Tower’s pressure, it’s time for your first integrated squad contract," Professor Aaron said, his tone turning crisp and professional.

He tapped a blinking yellow node on the map overlay.

"Contract Code: Sector 1-E Reclamation & Node Setup. A forward supply outpost along the Eastern Border was recently hit by a localized mana spike. The defensive wooden palisade is damaged, the soil around the outpost is contaminated with low-grade blighted roots, and wild Thorn-Prowlers—E-Rank feline beasts—are prowling the perimeter."

Professor Aaron leaned forward, laying out their objectives clearly:

Combat Wing (Caelen & Mirei): Secure the perimeter, draw beast aggro away from the work zone, and neutralize any incoming waves of Thorn-Prowlers.

Crafting Wing (Barney): Repair the perimeter palisade gates and reinforce the structural warding posts.

Alchemy Wing (Seraphina): Synthesize field-grade anti-venom on-site using harvested local flora to counter Thorn-Prowler neurotoxins.

Agricultural Wing (Rowan): Purify the contaminated soil around the node and cultivate a fast-growth barrier crop to establish a permanent supply buffer.

"This contract tests your ability to operate as a self-sustaining unit under field pressure," Professor Aaron said, stamping the authorization permit and transferring the objective coordinates to Rowan’s device. "Clear the threats, repair the post, purify the land, and hold the position until garrison scouts arrive to take over."

Rowan locked the coordinates into his tactical map and turned to his squad. "Gear up, everyone. Let me know when you’re ready to head out through the Eastern Gate."

"My hammer’s primed," Barney grinned, slinging his toolkit.

"Field cauldrons packed," Seraphina added calmly.

Caelen checked his shield straps while Mirei pulled a quiver of arrows over her shoulder. "Frontline is ready when you are, Leader."

Leaving the paved streets of the Sol-Aethel Staging Complex behind, Squad 07 marched past the heavily fortified battlements of the Eastern Gate. Towering iron-wood portcullises groaned as garrison guards hoisted them open, allowing the five students to step beyond the safe zone.

The transition was immediate. The smooth granite road gave way to rugged dirt tracks choked with tangled brush, dark purple moss, and twisted, obsidian-barked trees. The air grew noticeably thicker, carrying the damp, metallic scent of unrefined Tower mana and faint decay.

With their silver Squad 07 badges glinting under the pale light of the Tower’s ceiling vault, the group fell into a tight defensive formation. Caelen walked at the point, his massive tower shield held low and ready, while Mirei hovered slightly behind his right shoulder, an arrow already nocked on her recurve bow string. Rowan, Barney, and Seraphina maintained the central core.

"Keep your senses sharp," Caelen warned softly, his boots crushing dry roots underfoot. "The blighted vegetation muffles footsteps. In these border sectors, beasts love to ambush from the canopy."

"The mana density out here is fluctuating," Seraphina observed, adjusting the straps of her portable field alchemy kit. "The soil ahead is leaking low-grade toxic runoff. Perfect breeding ground for Thorn-Prowlers."

After twenty minutes of cautious tracking guided by the blue GPS marker on Rowan’s device, the trees parted, revealing the damaged Sector 1-E Outpost.

The outpost was in grim shape. The perimeter fence—a tall palisade built from heavy log posts—had a jagged ten-foot breach on its northern side, where splintered wood lay scattered across dark, blackened soil. The central stone shelter stood intact, but the soil surrounding the entire clearing was coated in a oily, dark-purple blighted film, wilting the local flora and seeping into the wooden foundations.

Low, guttural growls echoed from the treeline surrounding the clearing. Piercing yellow eyes flickered among the shadows as three Thorn-Prowlers—large, sleek feline beasts with razor-sharp wooden quills sprouting along their spines—slunk out from the brush, locking their gaze onto the incoming squad.

"We have eyes on the target area," Rowan said calmly, taking in the scene and quickly assessing the priorities. "Caelen, Mirei, draw their focus and clear the clearing perimeter. Barney, assess the palisade breach and start setting up reinforcement posts. Seraphina, extract soil samples from the blighted area so we can counter the toxins. I’ll begin soil purification."

"On it!" Caelen shouted, slamming his broadsword against his tower shield with a resonant CLANG that echoed across the clearing. "Over here, hairballs!"

The Thorn-Prowlers hissed, their quills bristling as they surged forward, launching Squad 07 into their first integrated field operation.

The three Thorn-Prowlers lunged from the treeline in a low, terrifying arc, their obsidian quills rattling like dry bone.

"Hah!" Caelen roared, taking two explosive steps forward. He slammed the iron base of his tower shield into the dirt, channeling his mana into a heavy, localized shockwave. [Taunting Vanguard: Seismic Anchor]!

A translucent ripple of forced aggro hit the leading beasts mid-air. Redirected by the sudden taunt, two of the Thorn-Prowlers altered their trajectory, crashing violently against Caelen’s heavy shield. Steel met razor-sharp claws in a shower of sparks. Caelen held his ground, his boots digging inch-deep trenches into the earth as he absorbed the double impact, his broadsword lashing out in a tight horizontal arc to keep them pinned against his frontal arc.

The third prowler tried to flank around his left shoulder, aiming straight for Seraphina’s field alchemy kit.

Thwip! Thwip!

Before its paws could even touch the grass, two feathered arrows pierced its front left shoulder with terrifying precision. Mirei didn’t even pause to watch it stumble—she was already drawing her third bowstring, her breath calm and rhythmic.

"Target pinned!" Mirei called out. "Caelen, step right—three degrees!"

Without turning his head, Caelen shifted his shield stance right on cue, opening a clean line of sight down the middle. Mirei released her shot. [Piercing Gale Arrow] vanished into a blur of compressed air, driving clean through the third beast’s flank and pinning it to a wooden palisade post.

While the Thorne twins operated as an impenetrable two-person killzone, Rowan sprinted directly into the center of the blackened, oily clearing.

He knelt on the corrupted soil, plunging both hands deep into the dark-purple sludge. The blight stung against his palms, a toxic, unnatural rot created by the Tower’s leaked mana, but Rowan simply closed his eyes and breathed out.

[Breath of Eden: Purifying Pulse]

A brilliant, warm golden aura erupted from Rowan’s hands, radiating outward across the dirt in expanding concentric circles. Where the golden light touched, the oily purple film sizzled and evaporated into faint grey mist. The dead, blackened soil loosened, reclaiming its rich, dark-brown color as cosmic mana cleansed the corruption at a molecular level.

Rowan didn’t stop at simple purification. Reaching into his waist pouch with one hand while keeping the pulse active with the other, he scattered a handful of Silver-Root Vine Seeds into the freshly cleansed earth.

"Grown!" Rowan commanded softly.

Infused with his life force, the seeds germinated in seconds. Thick, shimmering silver vines burst out of the dirt, weaving together like living ropes to form a dense, three-foot-high natural barrier around the purified zone—sealing off the ground from any further toxic runoff.

Behind him, Caelen delivered a decisive overhead strike, felling the last Thorn-Prowler, while Mirei lowered her bow, her eyes scanning the quiet canopy.

"Perimeter clear," Mirei announced, slipping her bow back into its holster. She turned around and blinked in surprise at the lush, shimmering hedge of silver vines already surrounding Rowan’s purified plot. "Wait... did you just purify the entire soil node and grow a living barrier in under two minutes?"

Barney chuckled, setting down his heavy hammer near the splintered gate. "Told you. When Rowan gets to work on a plot, the land doesn’t stand a chance."
