Gardener of Eden
Chapter 234: Level 40
Chapter 234: Chapter 234: Level 40
The golden light of Eden closed warmly around Rowan as he climbed out of the root-door with the satchel of spring water clinking at his hip. He had taken three steps across the soft, level earth when the world chimed.
It was not a sound exactly. It was a clear, bright note that seemed to ring inside his skull and in the bones of his chest at once, like a bell struck in a very large, very quiet room. Every leaf on the World Tree overhead trembled, and a faint silver light rippled down its trunk and into the roots.
A pane of pale blue light unfolded in the air before his eyes.
[ LEVEL UP! ]
[ You have reached Level 40. ]
Then the strength arrived.
It started at the base of his spine, a slow, spreading warmth that rolled outward through every limb. His muscles hummed. His heartbeat deepened and steadied, each pulse landing like a drumbeat in a hall of stone. The air seemed to sharpen around him, every scent and sound suddenly crisp and precise: the dry rustle of grain half a mile away, the cool breath of the cellar doors, the faint, bright song of the spring water in the satchel. He flexed his fingers and felt the power running through them like a river held just behind a dam.
He set down the satchel carefully, because the thought of what he might do to the crystal bottles if he forgot himself was not a comfortable one, and let out a long, slow breath.
"Right," he murmured. "Let’s see what we’ve got."
A line of unallocated points glowed at the corner of the pane. Rowan studied them for a while, hands loose at his sides, and then he did what he always did: he thought it through.
He had spent most of his life as a man who tended things, not a man who broke them. But he had also spent two years climbing floors with Squad 07, and he knew exactly what happened to a fighter who bet everything on a single strength. Brute force broke on the first thing it could not move. Speed alone ran out of room. Mind alone was a sword with no arm to swing it.
He decided, as he had decided many times before, on balance.
The points flowed where he directed them, and the numbers shifted in the air: strength, vitality, and agility rising together in quiet, even steps, while his mind and wisdom climbed a little higher still. A farmer’s trade, after all, was part muscle and part patience, and the second half had always mattered more. When the last point settled, the pane flickered and rearranged itself, and the whole picture sat in front of him, finished.

Rowan read it through once, slowly, and a small, rueful smile touched his mouth.
Zero experience toward the next level. Ten million to go. He had known the numbers climbed steeply past forty, but seeing that long row of digits sit patiently at the bottom of the pane was a humbling thing. It was the kind of number that stopped being a goal and became a way of life.
His eyes drifted back to one line, and the smile faded into something quieter.
Breath of Eden, Level 10.
He had known it was coming. For weeks now, the skill had been growing in him like a seedling pushing toward the light, each night’s work in the fields adding a little more, each hour in the earth with his hands pressed to the soil bringing it closer. Last night, on the porch with his mother, he had felt it deepen. At Sunny Vale, kneeling in the dark terraces, he had felt it deepen again.
But there is a difference between knowing a thing is coming and standing inside it when it arrives.
The change did not announce itself with light or sound. It was subtler than that, and far more fundamental. It was as though a wall he had never known was there had simply dissolved, and for the first time he could feel the ground not as something beneath him but as something with him.
The soil of Eden stretched out under his boots in every direction, and he could read it all at once: the slow, patient pulse of the deep earth, the long, silver threads of the World Tree’s roots, the tiny, bright flickers of every seed he had scattered an hour ago, each one stirring in the dark. It was like stepping from a small room into a vast, open sky.
He knelt, because it felt like the right thing to do, and laid a hand against the dirt.
It answered, not with a tremor or a surge, but with a welcome, a low, deep, wordless warmth that rose through his palm and into his chest and settled there, as natural as breathing. The seedlings nearest his hand leaned toward him, thread-thin shoots uncurling in the soft golden light.
The grass at the edge of the field grew visibly greener. A faint, glittering mist drifted up from the soil and swirled around his fingers, and in it he caught the scent of spring rain and sun-warmed leaves, the unmistakable breath of Eden itself.
Passively accelerates growth, vitality, and evolutionary potential of surrounding life.
The words in the status pane had been dry and exact. The reality was a quiet miracle. He did not have to reach for it, or command it. It simply flowed from him now, a gentle, constant current, touching everything near him, asking nothing in return. Plants grew a little stronger around him. Animals grew a little braver. Life, wherever he walked, leaned toward the light.
He thought of Lily, small and warm in the crook of his arm, with the faint luster of new circuits glowing beneath her skin. He thought of Sophia’s seedling, thriving on a windowsill. He thought of the farmhands at Sunny Vale, laughing in the noon light with strength they had not asked for and did not yet understand.
I will have to be careful, he thought, and the thought felt very clear and very calm. This kind of gift touches everything. I will have to learn what it does, and what it should never do.
He rose slowly, dusting the soil from his palms.
Overhead, the leaves of the World Tree swayed in their private wind, and a single golden leaf spiraled down and landed in his open hand. It was warm, with veins of silver running through it, and it hummed very faintly, as if in answer to something he had said without speaking.
Rowan closed his fingers around it and tucked it carefully into his pocket.
"Thank you," he said again. "For all of it."
The tree gave no reply. But the golden light brightened, just for a moment, and the whole domain seemed to breathe out.
He shouldered the satchel, set his hat firmly on his head, and turned toward the edge of Eden, where the way back to the world lay waiting. There was a family to see, a Princess to visit, and a Tower that would not stay quiet forever. He had grown stronger, and the world had grown stranger, and he meant to keep pace with both.
