From Human to Skeleton: Revived with Infinite System Crystals
Chapter 904 - 904: Palla Finds Teeth In The Route Jaw
The fourth desk bit through a strip of brewery tin and kept chewing after Palla pulled her hand away.
The strip had come from a keg label. One end remained between her fingers while the other vanished below the Meren plate. Each turn of the hidden wheel shortened it by the width of a nail.
Davi lowered his rifle toward the gap. "Commander Vey ordered two local witnesses. His order said nothing about either witness feeding a hand into this machine for proof."
"You agreed to watch me learn which part eats witnesses."
The second witness leaned over the desk with flour still ground into the seams of her coat. Her brewery tag read FENN JOR above FERMENTATION FLOOR. Palla remembered her under the west wall, using a keg lever as if six human sized hands were another bad shift.
Fenn pinched the remaining tin. "That label belongs to a barrel holding the third cellar roof, so I want both pieces returned."
Palla let her keep the loose end. "Then mark the loss against Commander Vey if the desk wins."
"I already marked six kegs, one lever, and my lunch against him."
Davi looked ready to defend his commander until the desk took another bite. He put the rifle stock beneath the broken surface and raised it two inches.
Ten iron jaws circled the brass carriage. The cloudy plates above them remained still. Below the Meren position, a narrow set of teeth turned sideways under the frame, where anyone standing in Room Four would have missed them.
Palla caught the wheel with Sorn's bent drawer rail. It stopped chewing and held the tin hard enough to stretch the stamped brewery number.
"The visible jaws turn a world toward the room. These lower teeth pull across the bottom."
Davi shifted his rifle deeper. "Both directions belong to the same hostile machine until you prove a useful difference."
"One watches your city while the other carries weight away from it."
"That explanation became confident before the proof arrived."
Palla liked him better for saying it.
Fenn opened a paper sack from the brewery steps and threw a handful of flour beneath the carriage. White powder settled across the lower wheel. Half stayed dry. The rest darkened where old grease filled the tooth roots.
Palla turned the drawer rail backward by one notch.
Flour climbed the teeth away from the Meren plate and disappeared beneath the center socket. None touched the cloudy glass. The hand socket flexed around Nessa's broken safety catch, then held because the metal pin sat sideways in the empty cup.
"Observation goes through the plate, while cargo passes beneath the hand."
Davi watched the safety catch bend. "Cargo still needs an arrival point, and the hand appears ready to choose it."
The fitted fingers around the socket had old wear at their tips. Palla found Sadle keeper grooves on one, cut by a flat key forced under load. Another carried the broken ends of an Oltin six point driver. The next had parallel bites from a tool with two jaws and no turning edge.
Fenn touched the last marks with a floury nail. "Meren maintenance owns cutters that leave a pinch between both bites. This gap is too wide."
"Then somebody opened the same cargo jaw with a tool made for another world."
Davi removed a pulse gauge from his belt. He held its copper probe above each scar without touching. The Sadle cut gave no reading. Oltin's broken driver tips answered the gauge through metal dust left inside the rim. The wide tool marks carried a weak heat pulse that repeated twice, paused, and repeated three times.
Palla looked at the pattern before Davi could call it a signal.
The cargo wheel had seven usable teeth. Beside the seventh, three square punches surrounded an empty center. A second mark sat below it, one long cut over six shorter cuts. The same pair repeated on the underside of the next world position.
"Three squares mark the prison route family. The seven cuts mark whoever receives this load."
Davi kept the gauge above the heat pulse. "You recognize the first mark from the machine that crossed your execution room."
"I recognize it from chair brackets Erebos lost when the wall came through. The second mark never faced the room."
Fenn rubbed grease from the long cut. "Shift owners stamp tools where workers can see who gets blamed. Whoever owns seven hid the mark where cargo sees it."
"A captain mark remains possible, but the metal has not named a captain for us."
Davi withdrew the probe. "Then our report says seven cut load owner until somebody earns a title."
Palla took a copper keg tag from Fenn's pocket. Its wire loop had already been twisted around the worker's middle finger twice, the habit of someone tired of labels falling into vats.
She tied the tag to a length of Nessa's discarded burn cord and passed the tag beneath the Meren teeth.
The cloudy plate stayed shut.
The cord pulled toward the center socket, crossed under the hand, then turned toward the position carrying Sorn's torn seal. Palla stopped feeding it. The cargo teeth continued turning against the fixed length until the burn cord pressed a red groove into her damaged palm.
Davi reached for the cord. "Release it before the route takes another piece of your hand."
"Hold the drawer rail because releasing this tells us nothing about return load."
He put both hands on the rail. Fenn caught the cord behind Palla's wrist and wrapped it around a keg hook. Together they held while Palla lifted Nessa's safety catch inside the empty cup.
The hand socket moved a finger's width.
The keg tag vanished beneath it without opening any plate.
Fenn hauled on the hook. The cord came back three inches and stopped. Black packing grease coated the braid where none had touched it before. A thread of gray cloth clung beneath the copper tag.
Palla lowered the safety catch. The socket clamped, trapping the cargo direction before it could take the tag again.
"That path reached stored material without bringing Room Four between us."
Davi looked toward the sealed route plate behind Ty's Reaper chain. "Stored inside Erebos's prison, or somewhere his prison uses for supply."
"The marks prove his apparatus. They leave the destination open."
Fenn pulled the gray thread free with the tip of her keg hook. One side carried old soap. The other held black grease in three square spots.
"Whatever waits there launders cloth before packing it."
Palla thought of the funeral engine, the tank, and Sadle washing lines that should never have known Erebos's outer clock. The machinery had taken ordinary work from each world and laid a private road beneath it.
She cut the keg tag from the cord and handed it back to Fenn. One corner had been clipped off by the hidden teeth.
"Charge Commander Vey for the missing corner after we keep your cellar standing."
Fenn tucked the tag into her coat. "His account already requires another page after today's kegs."
A salvage crawler waited beside the brewery stairs with three field fingers and the black knuckle bone locked under mesh. When Davi stepped away from the desk, all three fingers turned toward the lower cargo jaw.
The black knuckle stayed still.
Davi brought his pulse gauge to the mesh. The fingers bent around its copper probe and pulled the whole instrument toward the desk.
"Those pieces came through this route first, so the cargo jaw may be recalling them."
Palla put the drawer rail across the mesh before the fingers found a gap. "Recall still belongs to an owner, and we have only found his hidden mark."
A metal tray struck the clinic stairs above them.
Dead Vale strips slid over its rim. One length folded around the handrail and pulled itself lower. Another caught on the stair edge, stretched thin, then tore so both halves could keep moving.
Fenn put her keg hook through the first strip and planted its handle against a step. "Your field fingers want the desk, while this mess wants the skeleton."
Ty stood inside Vey's quarantine line across the intersection. The route seated around his chained rib had turned toward the stairs. Jade held one hand over it while a West Four soldier pushed civilians behind the casualty board.
Using the spilled flour, Palla marked the split with one line from the crawler to the cargo jaw and another from the clinic stairs to Ty.
"Keep the field pieces under mesh and move every dead suit strip above the third landing. Different pulls require different cages."
Davi relayed the order to Vey and called two unarmored soldiers toward the stairs. Fenn kept her hook planted until they brought a steel bread rack from the brewery kitchen.
The three field fingers tapped seven times beneath Palla's drawer rail.
The black knuckle stayed still while dead Vale strips climbed through the bread rack toward Ty's chained rib.
