"Madam, sit here!" Zhao Yun pointed to the empty bench next to him and said to Mrs. Luo.

Mrs. Luo did not stand on ceremony and sat down beside Zhao Yun, listening carefully to everyone talking.

"Mrs. Luo, we were just saying how good Mr. Luo Bai is! You’ve raised a good son!" The village chief said with a hearty laugh.

"It’s because everyone shows him respect and thinks highly of him! Speaking of Luo Bai, this child has always been rather reserved since he was young, and I’ve always worried about how he’d interact with others!

But surprisingly, since coming here, he’s become much more lively. Surely, it’s all thanks to everyone here!"

Mrs. Luo is actually a very kind person, quite similar in temperament to Luo Bai.

The reason she doesn’t attend the village’s red and white events is that her husband started disliking the noisy environment after going a few times.

Today, there was no choice; it was her son’s birthday, and having been here for so long, she’d received help from many in the village, so whether she wanted to or not, she had to come.

Speaking of which, since Luo Bai brought Mrs. Luo to Er Gui Village, villagers have been sending them homegrown vegetables every day.

Sometimes it was cabbage, sometimes beans, and even chickens were sent over.

Every day when Mrs. Luo opened the door, there were things from the villagers placed at the entrance of their courtyard.

How could she not be grateful to the villagers!

"Since we all get along well, it’s fate!" Mu Dashan said.

Others nodded in agreement, and suddenly, Taohua and Fu Xiaonan stood up at the same time, "I’m going to check if Shuangshuang’s dishes are ready!"

With that, the two of them went together to the back courtyard, to Mu Shuangshuang’s kitchen.

In the kitchen, Mu Shuangshuang was just stir-frying the last dish of winter bamboo shoots, which Zhao Yun had brought from home.

Zhang Yutou and Zhao Gouzi had dug them out from the bamboo grove; since they were underground, the shoots were still tender, perfect for light stir-frying.

"Shuangshuang, are the dishes ready? Do you need our help?" Fu Xiaonan asked, raising his voice before even entering the kitchen.

Mu Shuangshuang couldn’t help laughing.

When Fu Xiaonan and Taohua entered the kitchen, she said, "Help me carry the dishes to the dining hall next door, please! The last dish is almost done!"

"Okay!"

The three of them divided the work, and in no time, all the food was on the table.

Mu Shuangshuang went to the front courtyard to call everyone, and since they were all familiar, no one stood on ceremony.

As soon as Mu Shuangshuang called, everyone came.

In no time, everyone gathered around a table.

At a birthday celebration, it’s usually all about eating and drinking, and Luo Bai’s was no different.

After everyone finished offering their blessings, it was time for big bowls of wine and large bites of meat.

Mu Shuangshuang was in a good mood all day; at the dining table, no matter what people asked, she answered them.

What’s more, after the meal, she refused Fu Xiaonan and Taohua’s help and cleaned up the entire dining hall and kitchen all by herself.

...

...

That night, beneath the dark sky and gusty winds, the whole of Er Gui Village was shrouded in stillness.

Even the old dog at the village entrance, which usually barked, seemed to be asleep, making not a sound.

If one looked closely, they would find the village dogs lying scattered in all directions.

Though not dead, they wouldn’t wake up for a night.

Old Mu Family’s old house—

Mu Shuangshuang carried a sack on her back, inside it, the little treasures she brought back from the tavern today.

Just carrying these little treasures, Mu Shuangshuang felt a chill swirling on her back.

If these little treasures weren’t wrapped in the sack and were all spilled on Ma the Landlord’s bed, what would happen?

As Mu Shuangshuang thought about it, her movements became lighter and more agile.

She scaled the wall into her old family house.

She had found out that Ma the Landlord was now living in her old house, sleeping in the room she once slept in!

Thinking of this made Mu Shuangshuang even more determined to finish off Ma the Landlord.

Perhaps she came too late, or maybe it was just the cold wind howling tonight—so cold!

No guard dogs were seen in the courtyard, so Mu Shuangshuang easily entered, not Ma the Landlord’s, but her former room.

There were many valuable decorations in the room—cabinets, furniture, and various antique vases, clearly costly.

But Mu Shuangshuang ignored those things and instead walked to Ma the Landlord’s bedside.

This old thief slept with a dagger in hand, likely due to the many bad deeds he had done, afraid of being "sliced" in his sleep.

Mu Shuangshuang quietly opened the sack and placed the little snake treasures onto Ma the Landlord’s bed one by one.

In February, it was still quite cold, especially at night when the chill was most intense; even snakes, which liked damp and dark places, began seeking heat sources.

The snakes slowly crawled into Ma the Landlord’s quilt, soon disappearing from Mu Shuangshuang’s sight.

Fearing that Ma the Landlord might grab the dagger first thing in the morning and chop the snakes, Mu Shuangshuang casually tossed the dagger under the bed, thinking that by the time he got hold of it, the snakes might already be gone.

After doing all this, Mu Shuangshuang stealthily left Ma the Landlord’s room.

...

The next day, Ma the Landlord woke from his dream, not having opened his eyes yet, he felt a slippery sensation on his face, and his hands felt the same slippery touch.

He had no idea what it was, so he opened his eyes.

As soon as he opened them, he saw a snake as thick as a wrist atop his head, sticking out its tongue at him.

"Snake... snake..." Ma the Landlord opened his mouth to scream, his voice became distorted!

Ma the Landlord was extremely afraid of snakes; seeing one, he started screaming out loud.

Struggling desperately, he shook his head and flapped his wrists, finally flinging the snake atop his head away.

But the snakes hanging on him, due to his rough movements, all became violent.

Some, displeased with Ma the Landlord, bit him on the spot.

Sharp pain hit both his hands and feet.

Ma the Landlord was completely beside himself; he crawled out of bed, too flustered to even put on shoes, stepping on the icy floor, wailing.

"Snake... snake..."

"Help, help..."

Ma the Landlord’s face turned a livid shade. Cold sweat was pouring out non-stop.

He was trembling uncontrollably, like a sieve.

The protectors who heard the commotion rushed in, only to see Ma the Landlord shaking like a fool.

On the ground, several snakes lay scattered, and Ma the Landlord’s mouth twisted, saliva incessantly drooling out. "Snake... snake... snake..."

"Master, what’s wrong with you?" exclaimed one protector.

Another protector explained, "Our master fears snakes; he must have been scared by these beasts today. Quickly, get rid of the snakes!"

Protectors were about to go catch the snakes when suddenly—

"Impossible," said one man, "in this weather, snakes shouldn’t be out! There’s something wrong with these snakes!"

"How... how do you mean?"

Upon hearing that the snakes were suspicious, those intending to save Ma the Landlord froze.

Indeed, it’s not even the third of March; how could there be snakes out? Impossible!

Yet, clearly there were snakes in the master’s room?!
