Fox Has No Malicious Intent
Chapter 1084 - 1081: Black Smoke Billows from the Fox Immortal Temple’s “Kuku”
"A temple... with foreign chicks?"
"This temple you're talking about... is it legit?" Ah Qing looked stunned, separated by a courtyard as she shot Chen Nian a suspicious look.
Every word Chen Nian said was a Chinese character, yet strung together, Ah Qing suddenly felt it was hard to read.
Ah Qing suspected Chen Nian was speaking French, but she had no direct evidence.
"Is there a problem?"
Chen Nian froze for a second, braced his arms, lay on top of the courtyard wall, raised a hand and rubbed his chin as he asked, "Master Fuli's believers are spread all over Blue Star, from Xia Country all the way to America and Europe..."
"Is it not perfectly normal for there to be a few foreign chicks working as ushers and hosts in the Fox Immortal Temple? Master Fuli's efficacy is famed at home and abroad."
Chen Nian spoke with full confidence, and instead gave Ah Qing a strange look.
As if asking her why she'd ask such a weird question—there are devotees from Xia Country in Master Fuli's temple, so of course there are overseas ones too. Having some staff who know foreign languages is just common sense, no?
"You... actually kind of have a point." A question mark popped over Ah Qing's head; she felt something was off, but after racking her brains for a moment, she again felt that what Chen Nian said seemed totally flawless and very reasonable.
"Then hurry up and call Master Fuli out. I'll take the lord over to check the goods; if they're not suitable, we'll swap in a new batch!"
Chen Nian raised a hand and beckoned to Ah Qing.
Hearing this, Ah Qing turned back, knocked on the door, and called to the little fox who was running bathwater and getting ready to wash.
"Xiaolan, Ah Di says your Fox Immortal Temple is opening, and that a batch of foreign chicks have come in to work there. He wants you to go take a look..." Ah Qing said as she picked up the little fox who was adjusting the water temperature.
"Oh? The Fox Immortal Temple's opened?"
Hearing what Ah Qing said, Ansheng paused, then showed an interested expression.
"Let's go, let's go, we'll go take a look. By the way, did you tell him about the medical dispute at the Chen Family's place?"
"I did. The people across the way apologized, and Ah Di's been paying out of pocket to take him for check-ups every single day, until the guy's scared of tests now." Ah Qing answered, then asked with a bit of bragging tone, "Aren't you curious why there are foreigners working reception at the Fox Immortal Temple?"
"Uh..."
Ansheng, perched on Ah Qing's shoulder, kept a subtle expression as he looked at her.
Why are there foreign chicks working reception at the Fox Immortal Temple?
Naturally, it's because Old Chen's house couldn't fit them anymore and they almost blew up Granny Hedgehog's clubhouse; so seeing them all idle anyway, he just found them something to do.
Otherwise they'd be like street punks, hanging around all over Changxi Town every day, affecting local law and order and public morals.
"Because I heard Ah Di say that among the temple's visitors there are quite a few foreigners, so they need some ushers who know foreign languages to receive them, y'know~"
Ah Qing smiled as she explained to the little fox, and at the same time casually closed the front door, walking out from the courtyard.
Meanwhile, Chen Nian was still hanging on the wall, all polite as he chatted up Shu Xiaobai, asking if it wanted a job.
"Huh? Weren't you just hanging on the wall?"
Ah Qing came out onto the main road and at a glance saw Chen Nian's whole body sprawled over the courtyard wall.
Which made Ah Qing jump a little.
Chen Nian wasn't actually hanging on the wall; he was standing on a human ladder to hang over Ah Qing's courtyard wall.
Two burly foreign men were each holding up one of Chen Nian's legs to lift him up. Beside them stood another man dressed like an elite, wearing gold-rimmed glasses and smoking; he kept glancing at his watch, as if he had something to do later.
"Lord, Boss Lady, the Fox Immortal Temple's not far, just turn at the village entrance and you're there..."
Chen Nian swung himself down from the wall, temporarily shelving his plan to abduct Shu Xiaobai, and walked ahead to lead the way as he said:
"The Fox Immortal Temple opened yesterday. The number of worshippers is so-so, but their quality is insanely high. You toss a random red brick down and you could feast on lawyer's letters till you're full."
Chen Nian had just gotten back from America not long ago; though his words weren't actually mixed with foreign language, his metaphors were still a bit flavored with American local color.
Anyone who can afford top lawyers, in America, definitely counts as part of the rich class.
Like a kind of luxury where showing off isn't about consumption, but about racing an ambulance down the highway.
The day after the Fox Immortal Temple opened its doors, the visitors who came to worship were all people of wealth or status.
"BOSS! Get over here quick!"
In front of the antique-style Fox Immortal Temple gate, a blond woman in a front-opening Daoist robe looked utterly anxious; but when she saw Master Fuli and Chen Nian arrive, her eyes lit up and she hurried over to grab Master Fuli's hand, saying:
"There's so much incense money, so much that I'm worried the IRS is hiding under my bed, poking my ass with a gun barrel—"
"I don't even dare look at the shadows in the corners of the room..." Clara said, face tense.
"IRS... the tax bureau? You're American?" Ansheng looked at Clara, lines of exasperation running down his face as he complained.
"Um... I've got dual nationality." Clara said, looking very embarrassed. "I was just holding the POS terminal and saw the amounts the visitors were putting on their cards, and I couldn't help feeling weak in the knees."
"Pfft..."
Ansheng snorted, waving it off without a care. As if foreign tax collectors could come all the way over to collect from him.
Collect tax from a fox—how would that even be legal?
"Forget them. Worst case we fight it out in court; either way, I'll sort them out till they're docile."
Ansheng's expression turned odd as he glanced sideways at Chen Nian, then looked at the decorations inside the Fox Immortal Temple.
The temple wasn't particularly luxurious; it was just a very simple wooden-structure Daoist temple, everything done in retro style.
Right inside the gate you could see the incense burner and little courtyard, plus halls on the east and west sides, and the main hall up front.
Scattered worshippers wandered around inside; most of them had foreign faces, with a few locals mixed in.
The Fortune Box had also kept up with the times: aside from the traditional cash slot, there were QR codes and POS terminals.
There weren't many visitors in the temple, but the incense was extremely booming. Because people had thrown in too many sticks of incense, a large portion hadn't burned through and were coughing out thick black smoke.
And this trend was only getting more intense; they were just shy of setting the Fox Immortal Temple on fire.
"That over there..." Ansheng looked at the almost-burning incense burner, then turned to Clara in confusion. "Shouldn't you be using a fire extinguisher?"
"The stick incense in the temple is all free, but the coil incense offered at the god's statue costs money..."
"The worshippers bought too much; the indoor burners are already full, so we can only throw them in the big burner outside the door. In half an hour, we've done six million in sales..." Clara explained the blazing-hot business to Master Fuli.
It was selling so well that the Fox Immortal Temple, having just opened, already had to book factory home delivery.
"..." Hearing this, Ansheng's expression grew stranger as he looked at the Fox Immortal Hall inside, at the Fox Immortal statue being worshipped.
[I'm sorry... it was my fault, I couldn't resist having evil thoughts about that wild cactus. I am guilty. Please, Fox Immortal Lord, forgive my sins...—Angelica turned her gaze to the Fox Immortal Lord's statue, put her hands together, piously knelt on the cushion and bowed deep, confessing the sins she committed yesterday, hoping the Fox Immortal Lord would forgive her.]
[Wish fulfilled: It was me, I made you do it]
"I'm not, I didn't, I'm definitely not Brother Su. You dare say it, I don't even dare look..."
